QUEENSLAND TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT WED 30.08.01
STEWARDS PANEL: Mr J. Hackett (Chairman); Mr G. Ireland; Mr C. McLune; Mr D. Aurisch; Mr W. Birch; Mr W. Flynn.
WEATHER – FINE TRACK – GOOD RAIL – 8M. ALL TRACK
RACE 1: - PRINCESS TERESINA H'CAP - 1200M.
BLANCHEFLEUR, which was slow to jump, was hampered shortly after the start by VITNER, which shifted out abruptly, making heavy contact with SPICE BELLE.
SOUTHAMPTON ROSE jumped away awkwardly.
SNIPPETS' JEWEL also jumped awkwardly and shifted out, forcing SET OF BELLS out on to FIGEAC.
Approaching the first turn, SNIPPETS JEWEL and MAISETTE made heavy contact on 2 occasions when both horses shifted ground slightly. M. Cahill, rider of SNIPPETS' JEWEL, reported that the filly was inclined to lay out approaching the home turn.
After entering the straight, LAUREN EMILY commenced to race erratically until near the 200m. where OBLIGE shifted out to improve inside that filly where there was not fully sufficient room. As a result of this movement, OBLIGE made contact with LAUREN EMILY, which as a result of racing ungenerously, overreacted and shifted out abruptly. Stewards acknowledged that whilst LAUREN EMILY was racing ungenerously at the time, M. Rodd, rider of OBLIGE, shifted ground where there was not fully sufficient room and he was reminded of his obligations to exercise more care when shifting ground.
M. Dracos, rider of SOUTHAMPTON ROSE, was fined $50 for using his whip excessively on a horse out of contention.
RACE 2: CHAMPAGNE KATE H'CAP - 1300M.
BLUCHEETAH and HAIRSPRAY were both slow to begin.
LADY VETTORI, which jumped away awkwardly, threw its head and struck K. Bell in the face. LADY VETTORI lost ground at the start.
Making the first turn, BLUCHEETAH, which was inclined to overrace, had to be checked away from the heels of BE ALERT and shifted out 3 wide.
Near the finish line, HIDDEN CAMERA shifted in under pressure.
When questioned concerning his tactics to commence a run prior to the 600m., S. Katsidis stated that despite BOMBAY SAPPHIRE being inclined to pull hard near the 800m. he felt that it would be in the best interests of his mount to commence his run near the 600m. as the pace had slowed and the horse was travelling well at that stage. The explanation was noted.
When questioned concerning the seemingly disappointing performance of HAIRSPRAY, stable foreperson Mr D. Brown and rider J. Taylor both reported that the horse may have jarred up on the firm surface and felt that the horse may be better suited on tracks which were rain affected. Mr Brown also undertook to inform stewards of anything in the days subsequent to the race which may have had an effect on the performance today. A veterinary examination of HAIRSPRAY following the race failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 3: MERCHERIE H'CAP - 1200M.
Stewards questioned trainer G. Ryan prior to the race concerning KARAMAZOU'S preparation for this race. Mr Ryan informed stewards that the horse previously had setbacks in preparation for its first start, however he was satisfied that the horse was fit for today's race and had shown no signs of soreness. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination subsequent to the race, and the club's veterinary surgeon, Dr Manahan, reported that he was satisfied that the horse was suitable and sound to race.
KARAMAZOU and BUGS were slow to begin.
Leaving the 300m., DANISKY was disappointed for a run between CHICAGO NIGHTS and TELE SERIES and had to switch to the inside of CHICAGO NIGHTS for a clear run.
Nearing the 100m., BROCOLU, which had a tendency to hang in in the straight, shifted in under pressure and made contact with SAHARA FLIER.
C. Prosser, rider of the 5th placegetter, DANISKY, was fined $200 for failing to ride her mount right out to the finish of the race.
RACE 4: H'CAP - SUNSET SUE H'AP - 1400M.
WINSTED jumped outwards at the start and made contact with RAISE YOUR BID.
Shortly after straightening, ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE was disappointed for a run inside CELESTIAL SPRINTER, which rolled away from the rails.
RACE 5: TOD MAID H'CAP - 1841M.
KREISLER'S JEWEL, which was fractious in the barriers, jumped away awkwardly.
HAVE A SAY and TRUE ENOUGH were slow to jump.
Rounding the first turn, TWIN ISLAND, which was overracing, shifted in, making heavy contact with MALLEE FIRE.
Near the 1000m., MALLEE FIRE shifted out and brushed TWIN ISLAND.
PIANO LADY blundered inside the 400m..
RACE 6: SIERRA QUEEN H'CAP - 1000M.
ANGELAH MOON and BIG POONGA were slow to begin.
S. Katsidis reported that BANDIERA slipped behind at the start.
Near the 700m., GLITTERING AFFAIR had to be eased to avoid the heels of BANDIERA, which was taken in by AVON JEWEL.
RACE 7: LADY ELWES H'CAP - 1600M.
MARAUDING ROGUE, which reared then got down in the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
MARAUDING ROGUE and COME TO ORDER made heavy contact on jumping away.
FAR BEYOND was buffeted between DRUTHER'S OPTION and FINAL SHUFFLE for a short distance after the start.
FUTURE MASTER was caught wide after the start and then raced wide in the early and middle stages.
RACE 8: SCOMELD H'CAP - 1300M.
EMPYREAN and PARMA HEIGHTS were slow to begin.
On the first turn, KUMPEL ANTON shifted in and brushed the hind quarters of GOLDEN FAWN.
Approaching the 300m., GOLDEN FAWN shifted out and made contact with KUMPEL ANTON.
G. Lynch, rider of HANCOCK, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the finish line, tightening ROCKEDGE and HEAD OF STATE.
When questioned concerning the disappointing performance of POETIC EARL, S. Katsidis explained that the gelding overraced in the early and middle stages, and after making the 600m. crossing, the horse raced under pressure and was beaten at that stage. He advised that the connections had indicated that they may spell the horse.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
