QLD TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT.16.2.02

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr S. Railton (Chairman), Mr A. Reardon, Mr R. Sanders, Mr W. Flynn, Mr C. Waller (Cadet).

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 4.5M ALL TRACK

RACE 1: TATTERSALL'S WINE CLUB H'CAP - 1200M.

COMMAND FORCE jumped away very awkwardly.

Passing the 1000m., YOGI'S EDITION had to be steadied off the heels of MISTER OMEGA, which shifted in. Upon return to the enclosure, it was noted that MISTER OMEGA had sustained a laceration to the outside of the near hind fetlock. M. Dracos, rider of MISTER OMEGA, was cautioned for easing his mount prematurely before fully clearing YOGI'S EDITION.

RACE 2: CITY ROWERS SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 2129M.

When the pace slackened near the 1600m., KUTISHA'S BOY commenced to overrace and shifted out, forcing TRAIL OF GOLD wider on the track.

Passing the 300m., KHAADESH, which had commenced to lose ground, was hampered when tightened for room between TRAIL OF GOLD, which shifted in when placed under pressure, and GRAND SEMI, which was taken out by CANNY CRUISE. When B. Swanton, rider of CANNY CRUISE, straightened his mount, that colt shifted back in, resulting in ASTANA being taken in and having to be steadied off the heels of MR. CONNOLLY. B. Stewart (TRAIL OF GOLD), and B. Swanton (CANNY CRUISE) were both cautioned and urged to make more effort to keep their mounts on a straight course.

Over the final 100m., G. Duffy, rider of GRAND SEMI, was unable to fully test the gelding when held up between STAR OF ST. COVET and TRAIL OF GOLD.

B. Stewart, who became distressed after riding TRAIL OF GOLD in this event, was examined by the club's doctor and advised to forego his remaining mount on FLOWER GEM (Race 8). S. Galloway was substituted as the rider of that mare.

RACE 3: INTERFORMS H'CAP - 1600M.

On jumping away, MIGHTY EEL was cramped for room between FLYING SPARKS and BAY DUKE, both of which shifted ground.

L. Morrison, rider of BAY DUKE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1100m., she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of CALL TO HONOUR, resulting in that gelding being tightened for room and losing its position. L. Morrison was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 TAB meetings. Stewards ruled that apprentice Morrison, who also incurred an 8 meeting suspension at the BATC meeting on Wednesday, 13 February, would serve a combined total of 12 meetings for both indiscretions, with the penalty to commence immediately and to expire at midnight, 7 March 2002.

At the entrance to the straight, FLYING SPARKS was obliged to alter course back to the inside of CALL TO HONOUR when unable to obtain a run between that horse and AWESOME EDGE.

Both CALL TO HONOUR and BRAVE TATTLER were held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight.

RACE 4: EXPRESS POST FLYING - 1200M.

No incidents.

RACE 5: AUSTRALIA POST SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.

Leaving the 1000m., MONACO MISS was tightened for room by BE NICE, which shifted in whilst racing greenly.

DIFFICULT was forced to race wide during the event.

A veterinary examination of BE NICE following the event revealed the filly to be shin sore in both forelegs, and had sustained abrasions to the lip, near knee and off hind coronet.

RACE 6: CARLTON DRAUGHT COUNTRY CUP - 1400M.

STRANGE CONFLICT was slow to begin.

MARAUDING LASS jumped awkwardly.

At the 1100m., STRANGE CONFLICT had to be checked off the heels of MATTY'S GIRL, which shifted in. It was established that as MATTY'S GIRL had shifted in to obtain a position closer to the fence, that filly became awkward at the heels of ZEE and shifted in rather abruptly. In the circumstances stewards took no action, however K. Yoshida, rider of MATTY'S GIRL, was urged to ensure he is fully clear of the heels of runners in front when shifting ground.

Approaching the 1000m., SHOUT US ALL had to be steadied off the heels of PACIFIC LANE. ZEE and MOOKATAN also had to be restrained as a consequence.

At the 150m., BAY BARON had to shift out abruptly off the heels of SHOUT US ALL.

COMET DANCER lost its off hind plate in running.

Apprentice M. McDonald, rider of second placed COOLAWIN, was fined $100 for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram over his declared riding weight on that gelding.

RACE 7: AMP INTERACTIVE CENTRE CUP - 1600M.

When questioned regarding the performance of COUNT SCENARIO, J. Stanley stated that the gelding travelled well during the event, however the horse did not pick up and sprint with its big weight when placed under pressure in the straight. J. Stanley further added that in his view that at this stage of its preparation COUNT SCENARIO is better suited in middle distance events. Trainer H. Norman indicated that COUNT SCENARIO would be given a brief let up from racing.

A veterinary examination of ROCKET BALL, which weakened quickly over the final stages, failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 8: HAMILTON HOTEL H'CAP - 1200M.

PEGGY EILEEN, which dislodged its rider, M. Cahill, during the preliminary and subsequently completed 2 circuits of the course, was withdrawn at 4.55 p.m.. On the announcement of correct weight, all monies invested on PEGGY EILEEN were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 11 cents in the dollar on the face value of win and place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. A veterinary examination of PEGGY EILEEN revealed the mare had sustained a laceration to the off gaskin.

S. Galloway, rider of the 3rd placegetter, FLOWER GEM, was reprimanded for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram overweight on that mare.

Apprentice Z. Purton, rider of the 5th placegetter, MISS THUNDERSTOOD, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the finish line.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
