TATTERSALL'S RACING CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 22.06.02

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr S Railton (Chairman), Mr A Reardon, Mr C Clifford, Mr W Flynn, Mr R Sanders, Ms S Gillespie (Cadet)

WEATHER – FINE TRACK – GOOD RAIL – OUT 1M

GENERAL: As A. Pattillo was to be overweight, he was obliged to forgo the following riding engagements and the following appropriate riders were substituted:

Race 2 LADY WITH THE LAMP L. Currie
Race 7 GENE'S INTEREST D. Tanti
Race 8 AMAIZCAY A. Kennedy

A. Pattillo was fined the sum of $200.

RACE 1: TATTERSALL'S WINE CLUB H'CAP – 1200M

NAKED EYE jumped inwards at the start hampering MOTIVATE.

Passing the 1000m FINAL FORECAST had to be restrained when cramped for room between VLADIVOSTOK and NAKED EYE which shifted out when steadied off the heels of LINEA.

For some distance after leaving the 200m FINAL FORECAST was impeded for a run between MOTIVATE and WINNING BLIND.

RACE 2: HONG KONG TOURISM IS IT! SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1400M

On return to scale a protest was lodged by M. McDonald, the rider of 3rd placegetter RUN JUST RUN, against SMART CHARIOT being declared the winner, alleging interference in the early stages of the straight. Whilst it was established that SMART CHARIOT had shifted in near the 300m making contact with RUN JUST RUN for a short distance, the stewards dismissed the objection after forming the view that the incident had not materially affected the relevant finishing positions of both horses. At a subsequent inquiry, G. Duffy, the rider of SMART CHARIOT, was severely reprimanded for his actions in directing his mount inwards near the 300m resulting in contact between his mount and RUN JUST RUN. G. Duffy was advised in the strongest terms that such riding was bordering on improper and that he was to refrain from adopting such tactics in future.

RUN JUST RUN began awkwardly and made contact with LADY WITH THE LAMP.

LITTLE MADAME jumped inwards at the start inconveniencing TELDAWN.

SHA ALMA began very awkwardly and lost ground.

An inquiry was conducted into an incident at the 300m where MONTESANTOS SPIRIT had to be severely checked. It was established that nearing the 300m TAYLOR DANE was inclined to lay in behind LADY WITH THE LAMP and that when its rider K. McEvoy directed his mount away from the heels of LADY WITH THE LAMP, TELDAWN, which was attempting a narrow run to the outside of TAYLOR DANE, was taken out on to MONTESANTOS SPIRIT. It was also established that SHA ALMA, which had shifted in slightly contributing to the tightening, received contact on the hind quarters from MONTESANTOS SPIRIT, resulting in SHA ALMA being turned across the running of that gelding, exacerbating the tightening to MONTESANTOS SPIRIT. In all the circumstances, due to the number of contributing factors, no action was taken, however K. McEvoy was urged to make greater effort to keep his mounts on a true course.

Trainer G. Ryan and M. Cahill were questioned regarding the tactics adopted today on DAMIGOS. Mr Ryan indicated that there was no intention to lead on DAMIGOS in today's event and that he indeed indicated to M. Cahill to ride that horse reasonably quietly if there was genuine pace in the race. He added, however, that he did leave open the option of racing in a more prominent position in the event that there was no early speed. M. Cahill confirmed that he had flexible instructions, however there was never any intention to lead on DAMIGOS, but after beginning brilliantly he allowed the gelding to stride forward to overcome the horse's awkward alley. M. Cahill concluded by saying that DAMIGOS refused to settle at any stage and raced far too hard despite his efforts to steady the gelding in the run to the first turn. The explanations of both parties were accepted.

RACE 3: TATTERSALL'S GOLF CLUB H'CAP – 1400M

Trainer C. Brown was fined $50 for failing to make application for the addition of a tongue tie to the gear of LAGUSTA by the prescribed time.

At the 1100m COCKY CRUISER lost ground when reluctant to hold its position inside INVOICE when momentarily cramped for room by that runner. It was established that INVOICE had also in turn been taken in slightly by BAR ECLIPSE which was obliged to shift in off the heels of BUCKHEAD. M. Dracos, the rider of BUCKHEAD, was reminded of his obligation to be at least two lengths clear when shifting ground. When COCKY CRUISER lost ground THOMAS JOHN and LAGUSTA had to be steadied by their respective riders.

ZOFF ROCK was forced to race wide during the event.

G. Baker, the rider of VALETTA FLYER, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that after passing the 600m crossing he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of UNCLE NUGGET, resulting in that horse being checked when tightened on to OVER THE MOON. G. Baker was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence at midnight on Sunday, 23 June, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 4 July 2002.

Approaching the 300m VALETTA FLYER was disappointed for a run to the outside of ZOFF ROCK when that horse shifted out.

RACE 4: AUSTRALIA POST SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES – 1400M

As the start was effected SNOWY WEATHER blundered badly, dislodging its rider A. Kennedy. Both horse and rider suffered no apparent injury.

SQUEEL also jumped away awkwardly.

Approaching the 1200m PROUD BUCK had to be steadied off the heels of BUMPTIOUS when that horse shifted out.

On the first turn SHEER DEVOTION lost a little ground when steadied off the heels of SIR BREAKFAST. GENERAL MINOLTA, which was following, also had to be steadied. Whilst it was accepted that SHEER DEVOTION had tended to overrace in this incident, G. Duffy, the rider of SIR BREAKFAST, was nonetheless cautioned and reminded of his responsibility to provide at least two lengths clearance when shifting ground.

As NEDSCAY commenced to lose ground quickly on the home turn, PROUDLY AGRO clipped the heels of that horse and then shifted out abruptly making contact with SHEER DEVOTION. SHEER DEVOTION in turn bumped heavily with PRINCE SAMURAI which in turn collided with PROUD BUCK. As a consequence, PRINCE SAMURAI and PROUD BUCK both became unbalanced and lost ground.

RACE 5: MERCEDES-BENZ STAKES – 1200M

KAPUNA jumped away awkwardly.

Leaving the 1000m CRETE had to be restrained off the heels of IDYLLIC DREAM which was steadied by its rider to take a trailing position. CRETE continued to race fiercely at the heels of IDYLLIC DREAM for some distance after this incident.

PRINCE HAKEEM suffered a bleeding attack during the event. As this was the first occasion on which PRINCE HAKEEM had bled, it will incur a mandatory three month ban from racing.

RACE 6: CARLTON DRAUGHT WINTER STAKES – 1500M

MALAGRA MISS was slow to begin.

HERE FOR GLORY jumped away very awkwardly, making heavy contact with the inside gate. As a consequence, its rider D. Tanti was almost dislodged from HERE FOR GLORY, with the mare losing considerable ground.

Approaching the 1200m PARIS HEARTBEAT commenced to race ungenerously and shifted out. PALARIS, which was following, also commenced to pull extremely hard and shifted out off the heels of PARIS HEARTBEAT, making contact with JUANMO and in turn resulting in JUANMO being tightened for room to the inside of LAURINEL ARGIE. CARBRECEL, which was following, had to be checked as a consequence of the erratic behaviour of those runners.

CARBRECEL again had to be checked off the heels of PALARIS at the 1000m when PALARIS lost a little ground. At the same stage HERE FOR GLORY was momentarily tightened for room by PALARIS which shifted in and away from JUANMO.

Approaching the 800m MALAGRA MISS brushed the running rail of its own accord and lost ground.

At the 250m PALARIS shifted out around the heels of LAURINEL ARGIE and as a consequence caused some inconvenience to LOIRE VALLEY.

After being held up for clear running for some distance in the early stages of the straight, POURQUOI again had to be steadied approaching the finishing line as a consequence of RUSSIAN CARAVAN shifting out slightly under pressure.

RACE 7: TATTERSALL'S CUP – 2206M

After being slow to begin, LODGER was further hampered by KREISLER MIRAGE which jumped in.

ADAMANTLY and I REIGN SUPREME were both forced to race wide rounding the first turn.

Approaching the 200m KREISLER MIRAGE was impeded for a run between GENE'S INTEREST and SAILOR'S LARK which shifted out under pressure.

A veterinary examination of ADAMANTLY, which compounded badly in the straight, failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 8: TATTERSALL'S OPEN MILE – 1600M

LANDILLAC and POKING AROUND were slow to begin.

THE ALMIGHTY ONE tended to overrace in the early stages of the event.

DIAMOND DANE was obliged to race wide in the early and middle stages.

At the 900m HUGE DEMAND had to be steadied off the heels of KINGSGATE when that horse shifted in.

G. Baker reported that CARAEL BOY hung out during the event. A veterinary examination of CARAEL BOY failed to reveal any abnormality.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
