McDonald attempting to weigh out for this event without a protective vest. The inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed to allow M. McDonald to be represented by his master, Mr S. As M. McDonald was to be overweight, D. Evans was substituted as the rider of CALDRON.
NAKED EYE, which was kicked on the off hind fetlock behind the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
CALDRON was inclined to lay out under pressure in the straight.
When questioned regarding the apparent form improvement displayed by NAKED EYE in today's event, trainer M. Flanigan stated that the gelding's previous 8th at Eagle Farm on 13 July was a better run than it appeared as the gelding was forced to race wide during the event. He added that he had indicated to connections that NAKED EYE had a strong winning chance in today's event, given the horse's improved track work and that the gelding was well suited in today's event, particularly given its liking for a firm track.
A veterinary examination of I REALISE, which weakened in the straight after leading, failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer K. Schweida advised that in light of today's performance, I REALISE would be sent for a spell.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by M. Pelling, rider of the 2nd placegetter, AIRGUN, against TOP MARC being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages of the event. Whilst it was established that TOP MARC had drifted out slightly under pressure near the 100m., it was also determined that AIR GUN had shifted in under pressure at the same stage. On the evidence before stewards, it was also determined that AIRGUN had not been accidentally struck on the head by the whip of C. Reith approaching the finishing line as claimed by M. Pelling. Whilst however it was found that C. Reith's whip had contacted AIRGUN in the vicinity of the shoulder, the protest was dismissed, the stewards deeming that these matters had not affected the result of the race.
When steadied off the heels of MIGHTY ICON, which shifted in at the 1100m., CLANGALANG shifted out abruptly, hampering ANNOUNCER.
MIGHTY ICON made the 600m. crossing awkwardly.

Trainer S. B. Laming was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for STAR OF ST. COVET by the prescribed time.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to consider an approach from K. Yoshida, rider of SHA ALMA, querying whether his mount had been afforded a fair start. K. Yoshida stated that whilst he was receiving assistance from a barrier attendant, he had concerns that the attendant may have failed to release the near-side rein of SHA ALMA in sufficient time for the filly to be afforded a fair start. Whilst it was ascertained that the barrier attendant had been at the head of SHA ALMA when the filly had missed the start, the evidence was inconclusive as to whether the barrier attendant had hindered the filly at the jump. As a consequence, SHA ALMA was deemed to be a runner, with correct weight subsequently declared on the Judge's placings.
SMART CHARIOT jumped awkwardly, then shifted out abruptly, taking MIGHTY STRONGHOLD out on to BREEZE PAST, which in turn resulted in CLANGER being severely checked when tightened on to the hind quarters of PEDRO'S TYCOON, which was also hampered.
An inquiry was conducted into an incident which occurred soon after the 1100m. where BREEZE PAST met with interference. It was established that after shifting in and placing PEDRO'S TYCOON and BREEZE PAST in restricted room, M. Pelling attempted to straighten POLENTA, however that gelding continued to drift in slightly away from POETIC HEIGHTS, which crossed POLENTA at that time. As a consequence of this tightening, BREEZE PAST was taken in on to the heels of MIGHTY STRONGHOLD, which at that stage lost some ground. In all the circumstances, stewards could not hold one rider responsible for the incident, however M. Pelling, rider of POLENTA, was cautioned for initially allowing his mount to shift in, placing PEDRO'S TYCOON and BREEZE PAST in restricted room.
RACE 7: TATTERSALL'S MILE - 1600M.
THE ALMIGHTY ONE, which received a head injury in its stable, was declared late withdrawal at 11.58 a.m. acting on veterinary advice.

When steadied off the heels of FINNIGAN at the 1300m., WYNGROVE got its head up and raced ungenerously. BUSTER JONES, which was also in a trailing position behind WYNGROVE, had to be severely restrained off the heels of the gelding for some distance and shifted out approaching the 1200m., hampering UMPIRE.
When the pace slackened approaching the 1000m., WYNGROVE, FOSCAT, AMAIZCAY and BUSTER JONES all had to be restrained by their respective riders.
BUSTER JONES continued to race fiercely throughout the middle stages.
Approaching the 100m., PRINCE STARLIGHT was impeded for a run between TREVISCAY and BAILS, which shifted out under pressure.
The club's veterinary surgeon reported that THE KILDARE KID had been galloped on on the near hind tendon.
The club's veterinary surgeon also reported that FOSCAT had suffered a bleeding attack during the event. As this was he first occasion on which FOSCAT had suffered a bleeding attack, the mare will incur the mandatory 3 month suspension from racing.
