WEATHER – FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL – OUT 3M
GENERAL: Trainer J. Fitzgerald reported that REALE D'OR, which performed disappointingly at the Ipswich Turf Club meeting on 12 September 2002, had subsequently been diagnosed as having sustained bruising to the kidneys. Mr Fitzgerald also indicated that the horse was displaying soreness and had muscle damage across the back.
As G. Colless was indisposed, the following riding replacements were approved:
Race 1 QUEST FOR LIGHT S. Galloway
Race 2 GRAND BATAAN M. Rodd
Race 3 LONG WAY TO RUN M. Pelling
Race 4 DOWNTURN DUBAI J. Stanley
Race 5 FINAL FORECAST B. Stewart

Race 7 AMEX G. Baker
Apprentice jockey B. Albuino pleaded guilty to a charge of breach of AR 87D in that during the course of the meeting he was found to have in his possession a body protector which had been modified. B. Albuino was fined $1,000.
Following the running of Race 4, stewards interviewed all available riders to ascertain the degree of compliance by riders with AR 160B(3) which prohibits any person having a mobile phone in the precincts of the jockeys' room. Subsequently, the following riders (Z. Purton, B. Stewart, S. Campton, N. Evans, B. Appo and L. Appo) indicated that they had in their possession handsets which were subsequently surrendered to the stewards. After interviewing each party individually and carrying out further investigations, the inquiry into these matters was adjourned. Stewards also carried out a thorough search of the equipment of all other riders.
RACE 1: TERRY HENDLE BURSARY H'CAP – 2200M
Whilst proceeding to the barriers, JACK'S DREAM dislodged its rider M. Pelling and travelled only a relatively short distance before being recaptured. JACK'S DREAM was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of QUEST FOR LIGHT, S. Galloway stated that the mare overraced for a short distance after leaving the 1600m due to the pace slackening off at that stage. He added that QUEST FOR LIGHT travelled strongly into the race approaching the home turn, however when placed under pressure in the straight QUEST FOR LIGHT commenced to hang out and did not appear to stretch out comfortably. A veterinary examination of QUEST FOR LIGHT failed to reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken from QUEST FOR LIGHT.
Z. Purton, the rider of the 4th placegetter DANEGOLD, was cautioned for dropping his hands just short of the finishing line.
RACE 2: M G LYONS H'CAP – 1000M
NICADOR jumped away awkwardly and came into contact with MAN ON A MISSION.
Passing the 800m GRAND BATAAN had to be steadied off the heels of AVON JEWEL which shifted in. L. Morrison, the rider of AVON JEWEL, was cautioned and reminded of her responsibility to provide at least two lengths clearance when shifting ground.
Approaching the 600m crossing DOODA HUCKLEBUCK commenced to race fiercely at the heels of WONDER KICK and was obliged to shift out into a three wide position.
RACE 3: AUSTRALIAN PACIFIC VALUERS H'CAP – 1400M
Trainer A. Hess was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for LONG WAY TO RUN by the prescribed time.
Jockey S. Campton, the rider of ENTITY, was found guilty of a charge of misconduct in that as the start was effected he used an audible obscenity. S. Campton was fined $100.
EXCLAIM and ENTITY jumped away awkwardly.
PERLE D'OR jumped outwards at the start inconveniencing SYDNEY SIDER.
VERMILION FIRE raced ungenerously in the early stages.
GORILLA'S GALORE was obliged to race wide during the event.
S. Campton, the rider of ENTITY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that leaving the 400m he directed his mount outwards at a stage when not clear of VERMILION FIRE resulting in that horse having to be checked off the heels of ENTITY. S. Campton was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence immediately and expire at midnight on Saturday, 5 October 2002.
RACE 4: CROMWELL PROPERTY SECURITIES LTD H'CAP – 1200M
TELDAWN was slow to begin.
A swab sample was taken from the unplaced TYCHE.
RACE 5: VILLANOVA CLASS OF '86 H'CAP – 1815M
DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL and SILVER PAGE both jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
RACE 6: VILLANOVA CUP – 1200M
As the start was effected KULNURA sprawled and became unbalanced.
Soon after the start VETERAN shifted in causing some inconvenience to PALIDAMAH and YOUTHFUL.
After being disappointed for a run between VETERAN and YOUTHFUL at the 300m, STARTELL was unable to obtain clear running until nearing the finishing line.
Over the final 200m of the event J. Taylor was unable to fully test PALIDAMAH due to that mare's tendency to lay in. When questioned, J. Taylor stated that after being brought to the outside in the early part of the straight he placed PALIDAMAH under pressure, however as soon as he did, the mare showed a tendency to lay in. He added that as the race progressed PALIDAMAH hung in more severely which prevented him from being able to fully test the mare, particularly inside the 200m where he was mindful of runners to his inside.
Inside the 100m VETERAN had to be steadied when cramped for room by YOUTHFUL which shifted in under pressure. Whilst stewards accepted that his mount YOUTHFUL had proven difficult to ride and was inclined to lay in, L. Appo was nonetheless severely reprimanded for failing to make a greater effort to keep his mount on a true course at the time that VETERAN was hampered.
RACE 7: ABC LEARNING CENTRES QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1200M
Stable representative B. Widdup was advised that trainer F. W. Mitchell would be fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for SANDASTA by the prescribed time.
AMEX was slow to begin.
On the first turn SANDASTA was obliged to shift out abruptly off the heels of WHISKEY ON ICE. A short distance later WHISKEY ON ICE shifted in slightly, resulting in SHOOD BE SPEEDY having to be steadied.
SANDASTA was obliged to race very wide during the event.
Passing the 300m BILLY JARRAH was obliged to shift in abruptly to avoid the heels of the tiring DANCE SALLY DANCE. As a consequence SHOOD BE SPEEDY was taken in on to GRAND LOVER, causing both those runners to be inconvenienced.
A veterinary examination of DANCE SALLY DANCE, which compounded badly in the straight, failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
A veterinary examination of SUN KISSES, which weakened in the straight after being obliged to race wide in the early stages, failed to reveal any abnormality.
The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that SANDASTA sustained a laceration to the front of the off fore pastern.
RACE 8: VILLANOVA OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION H'CAP – 1500M
After passing the 1000m ROW BOAT shifted in at a stage when not quite clear of THE WRECK resulting in THE WRECK having to be steadied for some distance. J. Stanley, the rider of ROW BOAT, was reprimanded and reminded of his obligations to provide sufficient clearance when shifting ground.
SLEEK ALI was unable to obtain clear running in the straight.
ALL WINNERS, QUEST FOR LIGHT, TYCHE AND DANCE SALLY DANCE WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
