QUEENSLAND TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 01.03.03

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr S. Railton (Chairman), Mr G. Ireland, Mr D Hensler, Mr R. Sanders, Mr W. Birch, Mr C. Waller (Cadet)

WEATHER – FINE TRACK – SLOW RAIL – OUT 5.5M
DEAD (After Race 2)

RACE 1: IGT QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1200M

Trainer L. Birchley was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for WAPILLY by the prescribed time.

After being slow to begin, GAL EXPRESS was obliged to race wide in the early and middle stages of the event.

An inquiry was held into an incident which occurred approaching the 1000m where MANHATTAN EAGLE had to be severely checked. It was found that approaching the 1100m UNISTAR hung in despite the efforts of its rider M. Cahill, resulting in WAPILLY and MANHATTAN EAGLE both being crowded. Both WAPILLY and MANHATTAN EAGLE continued to race in restricted room inside UNISTAR until nearing the 1000m where MANHATTAN EAGLE had to be severely checked. It was established that at this stage the tightening to MANHATTAN EAGLE had been compounded when R. Goltz, the rider of PROTOTYPE, had permitted his mount to shift in when not quite clear of I'M A NUISANCE, resulting in I'M A NUISANCE being taken in on to OUR FUN which in turn applied further pressure to UNISTAR. R. Goltz was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is at least two lengths clear when shifting ground in future.

RAJA PRINCE was forced wide in the early and middle stages and also raced greenly.

RACE 2: AUSTRALIAN SELF STORAGE STRATHPINE H'CAP – 2134M

Trainer G. Stewart was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for LITTLE KATERI by the prescribed time.

PRINCE SAMURAI and BRITISH STORM bumped heavily at the start.

Soon after straightening, BRITISH STORM shifted in and away from LITTLE KATERI and bumped TYALGUM POP. MR. CONNOLLY, which was racing to the inside of TYALGUM POP, was also hampered as a consequence of being tightened for room between that horse and NOBLE CASTE, which shifted out at the same stage.

A veterinary examination of PRINCE SAMURAI, which compounded badly in the straight, failed to reveal any abnormality.

The track was upgraded to DEAD after the running of Race 2.

RACE 3: GILSHENAN & LUTON PLATE – 1600M

Making the 600m crossing, PEARL GLOW shifted in momentarily, inconveniencing ICY PRIDE.

At the 500m HOT SCORPION shifted in off the heels of the tiring ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE, resulting in PEARL GLOW being hampered.

Upon straightening, ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE continued to lose ground quickly which resulted in RIVA REBEL striking the heels of that gelding and blundering badly. D. Evans, the rider of RIVA REBEL, was reprimanded for his lack of judgment in this instance.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of RIVA REBEL, D. Evans staged that whilst the gelding did strike trouble at a crucial stage of the event, he felt that the gelding was not comfortable in the soft conditions. Stable foreman Mr D. Crouch indicated that he supported the views of apprentice Evans that the gelding did not handle the rain-affected track. He indicated that in future connections would more than likely refrain from running the gelding on similar surfaces. A veterinary examination of RIVA REBEL failed to reveal any abnormality.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that KYMESSA suffered an attack of colic after the event.

RACE 4: GUINNESS AUSTRALIA H'CAP – 1300M

As C. Reith was to be overweight, G. Baker was substituted as the rider of LADY TRISH. C. Reith was fined $100.

At the request of its rider J. Powell, BOMBAY SAPPHIRE was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon prior to the start.

TELDAWN was slow to begin.

BOLD MOLLY jumped in at the start tightening CARAMEL STAR on to MISS LOUISA.

B. Stewart, the rider of WITH MY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that approaching the 1200m he permitted his mount to shift in at a stage when not clear of LADY TRISH, resulting in that horse striking the heels of your mount and blundering. B. Stewart was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence immediately, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 12 March.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that LADY TRISH was galloped on on the near hind tendon.

RACE 5: BRL HARDY'S WINES H'CAP – 1300M

Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for ECSTASY by the prescribed time.

CEDAR LODGE was obliged to race wide during the event.

From the entrance to the straight until nearing the 50m, POLENTA was badly held up for a run behind KILLACHI and to the inside of BOLD FLUSH. Approaching the 50m, S. Seamer, the rider of POLENTA, attempted to obtain a narrow run which presented itself to the inside of KILLACHI when that gelding shifted away from the fence. However, soon afterwards S. Seamer again had to restrain POLENTA when KILLACHI shifted back in slightly under pressure.

SLEEK ALI was also held up for a clear run between the 200m and the 100m.

RACE 6: QUEENSLAND IRISH ASSOCIATION CUP – 1200M

As the start was effected, DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL threw its head in the air and lost considerable ground. Trainer R. Lipp was advised that a warning was being placed on DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL. Mr Lipp indicated that he would apply to remove the blinkers from DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL at the gelding's next start.

GENERAL TONG jumped away awkwardly and bumped AGGRAVATION.

RACE 7: WATERFORD WEDGWOOD H'CAP – 1400M

Trainer R. McCall was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for by the prescribed time.

Stable foreman Mr J. Anderson, representing trainer N. Petersen, was fined $50 for failing to ensure that SPINOUT was attended at all times prior to the running of the race.

STAR OF TELESTO was slow to begin.

After securing a run to the outside of the tiring ARI BANU at the 300m, KINGCIDON was obliged to shift out to avoid that runner, which resulted in HASS LINC being tightened on to the hind quarters of SPINOUT.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that NEGATE suffered a bout of heat exhaustion.

RACE 8: BAILEYS IRISH CREAM QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1000M

Stewards permitted the late withdrawal of POWER HUNT at 8 a.m. Trainer G. Taylor will be interviewed regarding this matter.

Due to an impending electrical storm, stewards directed that all runners be loaded promptly, which resulted in this event being run approximately 1 minute prior to the advertised starting time. Announcements via Radio TAB and Sky Channel were made to inform the public of this decision.

PENOLA jumped inwards at the start, and CRAIGLEA BELLS jumped out, resulting in a general tightening to FELICITATE, LEEARTO, DANCING LOU, RAUTAI'S WARRIOR and BATTLER.

Inside the final 50m FOURMI, which was finishing quickly, had to be checked to avoid the heels of PENOLA which shifted in under pressure. It was established that at the time that FOURMI had to be checked, KIND SPIRITS had also had some bearing on the incident by shifting out under pressure, which resulted in K. Yoshida, the rider of KIND SPIRITS, accidentally striking FOURMI across the head with his whip. Nonetheless, D. Evans, the rider of PENOLA, was severely reprimanded for failing to keep his mount on a true course over the concluding stages of the event.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
