QUEENSLAND TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 18.10.03

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr A. Reardon (Chairman), Mr J. Hackett, Mr G. Ireland, Mr C. Clifford, Mr D. Collingwood.

WEATHER – FINE TRACK – DEAD RAIL – OUT 2.5M
GOOD (After Race 4)

GENERAL: As M. McDonald was indisposed, the following riding replacements were approved:

Race 4 MISTER CHARLIE M. Rice

Race 8 BUSH PILOT L. Fitzsimmons

RACE 1: THE HONOURABLE WALLY NORMAN H'CAP – 2215M

When questioned as to the tactics he adopted on BLACK HULA, apprentice M. Rice stated that he had been instructed to lead unless the pace was genuine, and if so, to take a trail behind the leader. He added that as BLACK HULA was unable to lead ULTIMATE FORCE, he elected to race outside that horse and near the 1100m he elected to apply some pressure in an endeavour to get the horse racing on the bit; however, after passing the 800m the horse commenced to lose ground and compounded in the straight. Trainer H. Wilson confirmed the instructions given to apprentice Rice, however was disappointed when BLACK HULA was unable to cross to the fence and lead and that he was surprised to see BLACK HULA applying pressure to the leader near the 1000m. Whilst their explanations were noted, both apprentice M. Rice and trainer H. Wilson were advised that stewards were concerned that M. Rice should apply pressure at a stage in the race whereby it may not have been in the best interests of BLACK HULA. A veterinary examination of BLACK HULA failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.

When questioned as to the performance of ULTIMATE FORCE, S. Galloway stated that the horse was never on the bit throughout the event and in his opinion failed to run the 2200m distance of today's event.

RACE 2: PICCANINNY QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1000M

MISS ODYSSEY reared over in the enclosure, dislodging apprentice A. Stead. MISS ODYSSEY was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run.

NO PROMISES and CAFFE FRANCAIS were slow to begin.

CLANG GOES THEBELL blundered on jumping away.

LAGERETTE jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start MOORALANA shifted out taking MISS ODYSSEY out on to SEATTLE ZIP which resulted in SEATTLE ZIP becoming unbalanced and then shifting in taking MISS ODYSSEY back in on to MOORALANA and having to be steadied.

Near the 700m STORM MOSS had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SERENOTE which shifted in.

Near the 500m MISS COOL CARD had to be steadied off the heels of CANIONA which shifted out.

CAFFE FRANCAIS shifted out to improve making the home turn and made heavy contact with LAGERETTE which was severely checked when taken out on to SERENOTE. Whilst it was accepted that CAFFE FRANCAIS was racing greenly, S. Katsidis, the rider of that filly, was nonetheless severely reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in future, especially on two-year-olds.

RACE 3: CHAMPAGNE KATE H'CAP – 1200M

CAN'T TACKLE was obliged to race wide from the 700m.

When questioned as to performance of TAHITIAN STAR, N. Jolly stated that he had been instructed to ride the gelding off the fence in a bid to avoid being pocketed, however he was at a loss to explain the performance and the horse failed to respond when asked for an effort on the turn. He added that he had ridden the horse in its work, which had been encouraging, leading in to today's event. A veterinary examination of TAHITIAN STAR failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.

SLIPSTREAM bled from both nostrils during the event. As this was the first occasion on which SLIPSTREAM had bled, trainer S. Kendrick will be advised that the gelding will be barred from racing for a period of three months.

RACE 4: LADY ELWES H'CAP – 1600M

REGAL GARTER pulled hard in the early stages.

After leaving the 1400m BISHOP BILL shifted in and made contact with HOT FAME.

BISHOP BILL was obliged to race wide in the early stages.

CLIQUE was obliged to race wide throughout.

Whilst it was acknowledged that CLIQUE was hanging out in the straight, N. Day was reprimanded for striking the horse with his whip forward of the saddle.

Near the 100m CARBONNE was accidentally struck across the head by the whip of C. Spry, the rider of BISHOP BILL.

CASUAL REWARD bled after the event. Trainer W. Pholi's representative Mr C. Parker was advised that CASUAL REWARD will be barred from racing for a period of three months. Mr Parker also advised stewards that CASUAL REWARD was sore in the near foreleg.

The track rating was upgraded to GOOD after the running of Race 4.



RACE 5: NUDGEE COLLEGE CUP – 1812M

VITAL ASSET was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon prior to the start and passed fit to run.

MAKE ME A MIRACLE was obliged to race wide throughout.

RACE 6: LADY LUSTRE QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1200M

GET CARTER and LION QUEEN came together on jumping away.

Approaching the first turn GET CARTER had to be steadied to avoid the heels of BLOODLINE which shifted in. A short distance later BLOODLINE improved quickly to the inside of LION QUEEN where there was doubtful room. GET CARTER and SAHARA JAY, which were following, both had to be checked in this incident. At the same stage, KALINGA METAL raced ungenerously when being steadied.

Inside the 100m M. Pelling had to stop riding KALINGA METAL to avoid the heels of TEMPLE SPIRIT which shifted out under pressure. M. Pelling was then unable to fully test KALINGA METAL over the concluding stages.

SUPERSTAR ARIES, which raced wide throughout and finished a distant last, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon who reported that he could find no abnormalities.

S. Katsidis reported that NOBLE GENT was inclined to hang out throughout and he was of the opinion that the gelding had got its tongue over the bit during the event. Trainer J. Nielsen reported that upon examination of NOBLE GENT on returning to the stable it was found to be showing signs of shin soreness in both forelegs.

RACE 7: SCOMELD H'CAP – 1200M

Prior to correct weight Mr E. Petrie, representing J. Wallace's stable, requested that ROAR TALENT be deemed a non-runner as he was of the opinion that it was denied a fair start. Upon examination of the video and evidence taken from jockey S. Katsidis and the starter Mr Bill Shuck, stewards ruled that ROAR TALENT was a definite runner.

Approaching the 1000m DOODA HUCKLEBUCK had to be steadied off the heels of LEVANTE.

ROAR TALENT was obliged to race wide in the early stages.

SAFETY was obliged to race wide throughout the event.

ROAR TALENT made the crossing awkwardly.

C. Spry was reprimanded for returning overweight on JUST AWE.

RACE 8: MERCHERIE H'CAP – 1300M

Trainer R. Armstrong was advised that he would have to obtain a further barrier certificate for TYCOON ROSE which proved difficult to load.

BALLANULLY was slow to begin.

HIGH SPY jumped away awkwardly, brushing the starting gate, and then had to be steadied shortly afterwards when tightened for room between TRIPLE PE and WICKED WOMAN, which was taken in by PRIDE OF PARIS.

MACALBERT jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Near the 1100m SAUCER OF MILK shifted in and made contact with FREESPINS. SAUCER OF MILK then shifted out and made heavy contact with BUSH PILOT.

WICKED WOMAN raced wide in the early and middle stages.

WICKED WOMAN, which finished a distant last, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon who reported that he could find no abnormalities.

ALL WINNERS, BLACK HULA, SLIPSTREAM, CASUAL REWARD and TAHITIAN STAR WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
