WEATHER – OVERCAST TRACK – DEAD RAIL – OUT 9M
FROM SCTC 18.01.04: Trainer G. Osborne was fined $100 for failing to scratch DEVIL by the prescribed time.
GENERAL: B. Stewart and S. Seamer were relieved of their engagements due to both being ill and subsequently the following riding replacements were approved:

RACE 1: DUPAIN H'CAP – 1200M
J. Powell replaced B. Stewart on MONTESANTOS STAR. Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith advised that he had contacted J. Powell's manager after being notified that B. Stewart was unavailable to ride that filly. J. Powell was late on course and permission was granted for him to ride MONTESANTOS STAR ½kg overweight as he had already been declared to ride that filly.
Trainer J. Bayliss was advised that he would have to obtain a further barrier certificate for HAYLEY AND BRITT which proved difficult to load.
LIGHTFOOT was slow to begin.
HABITUE jumped away awkwardly.
REBACEDA shifted out at the start, inconveniencing CLANGING which was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m REBACEDA shifted out when racing ungenerously, taking REVERIES out on to the hind quarters of MONTESANTOS STAR, resulting in REVERIES having to be checked. HABITUE and SHREWD 'N' SOUND, which were following, were both checked in this incident.
REBACEDA continued to race ungenerously and near the 800m shifted in and brushed the running rail which resulted in CLANGING having to be checked to avoid that horse's heels. HABITUE, which was following, also had to be checked.
At the entrance to the straight CLANGING shifted out and forced SHREWD 'N' SOUND wider on the track. CLANGING continued to shift out for the remainder of the event.
Near the 300m SHREWD 'N' SOUND was accidentally struck across the head by the whip of S. Galloway, the rider of CLANGING.
Near the 250m SHREWD 'N' SOUND shied away from CLANGING when that horse shifted out.
SHREWD 'N' SOUND lost the offside fore and hind plates during the running of the race and sustained a laceration to the off foreleg.
RACE 2: GROOMING H'CAP – 1200M
YUKON PRIDE and TEMPLE JACK made contact on jumping away.
FUSH and BETTER LIGHT came together on jumping away.
MONTES MIGHT attempted to buck nearing the 1100m. Trainer J. Neilsen was advised that a warning would be placed on MONTES MIGHT in relation to its racing manners.
Approaching the first turn MONTES MIGHT had to be steadied to avoid the heels of YUKON PRIDE which shifted in.
When the pace steadied near the 800m, TEMPLE JACK had to be eased off the heels of FUSH. FINAL OBJECTIVE, which was following, also had to be steadied. FINAL OBJECTIVE then shifted out, forcing MONTES MIGHT wider on the track.
Near the 500m LOCAL BLOKE had to be eased away from the heels of FINAL OBJECTIVE and shifted out taking TEAKER'S BLUE STAR wider on the track.
RACE 3: STAR COVET H'CAP – 1400M
Trainer R. Turgeon was fined $50 for failing to present STORMY LANDING on course by the prescribed time.
OCTONE jumped away awkwardly.
MAC'S PRINCESS was slow to begin.
MAC'S PRINCESS raced wide throughout the event.
At the entrance to the straight SAVANNAH ROAD shifted out to improve and made contact with TELTREE which became unbalanced, forcing SAVANNAH ROAD back in behind the heels of OCTONE.
M. Gray, rider of 4th placegetter FAIR MONARCH, was found guilty of a charge of failing to ride his mount out to the finishing line under AR. 137(b) and fined $500. In assessing penalty, stewards were satisfied that M. Gray's actions had denied FAIR MONARCH the opportunity of gaining 3rd place.
RACE 4: SHEER KINGSTON H'CAP – 1000M
Trainer B. Brown's explanation for the late scratching of OUR COGNAC at 9.09 a.m. was accepted.
J. Stanley was replaced by C. Whiteley on COSTELLO when J. Stanley was to be overweight.
An inquiry was adjourned into the reasons why L. Cook failed to arrive to fulfil her engagement on SOLIDIFIED. She was replaced on that gelding by M. Deguara.
A request was made by trainer J. McLachlan and jockey Z. Purton to ascertain whether PHILLY was given every opportunity to jump with the field. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the video, PHILLY was declared a runner.
PHILLY was restless in the barriers prior to the start being effected.
GOLD TAURUS jumped outwards at the start, hampering COSTELLO.
OUR BULLION shifted out shortly after the start, causing PHILLY to be steadied.
Approaching the 800m CROWN REGATTA shifted out, making contact with OUR BULLION, taking HOT HENNESSY and SOLIDIFIED wider on the track.
REGAL SAPPHIRE was held up in the early stages of the straight.
Inside the 100m SILENT LAUGHTER brushed the running rail when improving to the inside of INTELLIGENTLY.
G. Colless reported that OUR BULLION felt sore in the off foreleg. However, a veterinary examination of OUR BULLION by the Club's veterinary surgeon failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
Trainer J. Fitzgerald reported that SILENT LAUGHTER had lost both fore plates in running.
RACE 5: SKY FLYER H'CAP – 1300M
PRINCE ADDAMA was very slow to begin.
SUPER BELLE also lost ground at the start.
STORM SIGN made the crossing awkwardly.
Close to the finishing line G. Colless (POSH TOUCH) had to stop riding when tightened for room between SENSIBLE and HUDDLE.
RACE 6: PRAISE INDEED H'CAP – 1600M
On return to scale a protest was lodged by J. Powell, rider of 2nd placegetter GENERAL INTENT, against SUSURRO (K. Pope) being declared the winner, alleging interference after leaving the 1400m. Whilst it was established that at a point near the 1300m GENERAL INTENT had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SUSURRO and in this incident became unbalanced, stewards were not satisfied that the incident materially affected the result of the race and the protest was dismissed.
MR. MONEYMAKER jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
SOVEREIGN SPUR was slow to begin.
MR. MONEYMAKER pulled hard in the early and middle stages.
MR CHIPS also raced ungenerously in the early stages.
PALACE JEST also raced ungenerously in the middle stages.
EASYLINE jumped the crossing.
PALACE JEST was held up for clear running approaching the 200m.
Trainer D. Forster reported that SOWETO lost its near fore plate in running.
RACE 7: YIPPYIO H'CAP – 1500M
After leaving the 200m MR. DONIZETTI shifted in and made contact with MAKIN' TRACKS.
Over the concluding stages MR. DONIZETTI was unable to obtain clear running.
RACE 8: DESERT CHILL H'CAP – 1600M
A. Best was questioned as to the disappointing performance of KING WELLS. He stated that he was instructed to lead, however when joined by TWICKENHAM, KING WELLS was inclined to overrace. Nevertheless, he was still disappointed with the horse's effort as it failed to finish the race off and in his opinion it may not have appreciated the extra distance of today's event. A veterinary examination of KING WELLS failed to reveal any abnormality.
HIGH OCTAVE was obliged to race wide throughout.
Over the concluding stages TWICKENHAM shifted out under pressure, taking MERV'S WISH out on to DEAD CAT BOUNCE which in turn shifted out making contact with HIGH OCTAVE. M. Lister, the rider of TWICKENHAM, was reprimanded and advised that he must straighten his mounts when shifting ground.
M. Lister was reprimanded for returning in excess of ½kg overweight on TWICKENHAM.
ALL WINNERS AND OUR BULLION WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
