RACE 1: LOOK ALOFT H'CAP - 1400M.
A veterinary examination of PAGER on arrival at the track passed the colt suitable to race.
Due to transport difficulties, C. Reith was unable to fulfil his engagement on LATTERLY and was replaced by R. Goltz.
LATTERLY was slow to begin.
SHILO was tightened for room at the start between FLINDERS PARADE and TACKMAN, both of which jumped awkwardly and shifted ground.
Near the 1300m., FLINDERS PARADE had to be steadied to avoid the heels of MOZZIES COZZEES, which shifted in.
TIME'S A TRAVELLER jumped the crossing inside the 600m., resulting in SHILO being checked and taken wider, and TACKMAN also being checked and forced extremely wide. PICATUNE, which had been racing wide, was inconvenienced in this incident.
Passing the 500m., TACKMAN shifted in, taking PICATUNE in on to MOZZIES COZZEES.
Near the 400m., PAGER and STRICTLY NEDIYM both had to be checked when racing in restricted room inside of TIME'S A TRAVELLER, which was inclined to race ungenerously after leaving the crossing.
RACE 2: BRIGHT SHADOW H'CAP - 1500M.
POWER LION jumped away awkwardly.
BIG MICK and NERRENA made contact at the start.
Shortly after the start, SWEET TOUR shifted out, tightening MISS CONDAMINE and POWER LION.
VINCEJO commenced to overrace after leaving the 1400m..
When being restrained to take a trail in the vicinity of the 1100m., EMMY WINNER got its head up and was inclined to race ungenerously.
Approaching the 1000m., CORRIENTE commenced to overace, and after leaving the 1000m., shifted out and made heavy contact with LOCAL BLOKE. Shortly after, DIXIE KLAIRE commenced to improve to the inside of CORRIENTE, however as a result of CORRIENTE racing ungenerously, shifted back towards the rails and DIXIE KLAIRE struck the running rail and had to be checked. When CORRIENTE shifted out, making contact with LOCAL BLOKE, MISS CONDAMINE and HOBEAU were both forced wider.
Passing the 800m., DIXIE KLAIRE again had to be checked off the heels of CORRIENTE, which continued to race ungenerously.
HOBEAU jumped the crossing near the 600m..
PRINCE CARTIER, SWEET TOUR and ART STUDENT also made the crossing awkwardly.
Rounding the turn and in the early stages of the straight, LOCAL BLOKE was held up for clear running.
Shortly after straightening, NERRENA shifted out, making contact with HOBEAU.
Leaving the 300m., CORRIENTE shifted out to improve and made heavy contact with SWEET TOUR.
D. Tanti, rider of SWEET TOUR, reported that his saddle shifted forward in running.
RACE 3: ROUND THE WORLD H'CAP - 2240M.
PURR AND POUNCE, which lashed out in the barriers, sustaining injuries to the near-hind hock, was declared a late scratching at 1.37 p.m. on veterinary advice. Following the event, all monies invested on PURR AND POUNCE were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 10 cents in the dollar on the face value of successful win and place bets placed prior to the withdrawal time.
SWEEP OUT jumped away awkwardly, making heavy contact with the barrier partition.
GIMME SHELTER and MAKRAMAH also jumped awkwardly.
Shortly after the start, GAELIC PRINCE shifted in, making contact with GRAND TIMES.
Near the 1800m., LADY JAY commenced to pull hard.
Near the 1700m., MARRY ME DEE got its head up and commenced to race ungenerously for a short distance.
Rounding the home turn, TELL TREE shifted out to improve and made contact with MAKRAMAH.
GIMME SHELTER, which was held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight, shifted out to improve approaching the 200m. and made contact with LADY JAY.
RACE 4: LOWAN STAR H'CAP - 1500M.
After leaving the 300m., GYPSY MINX shifted out to improve, taking STEAL THE MOMENT out on to JUST BROWSING.
RACE 5: TRISCAY H'CAP - 1000M.
Shortly after the start, EQUALOS shifted out and made contact with DEVLIN'S BRIDGE.
Near the 500m., when racing in restricted room between IN THE JUNGLE and DEVLIN'S BRIDGE, DOODA HUCKLEBUCK, shifted out across the heels of DEVLIN'S BRIDGE , causing SOLARUS to be inconvenienced.
B. Calkin, rider of FLAMING PRINCE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 300m. he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of EQUALOS, resulting in EQUALOS having to be checked and taken in on to CLAVIER. In this incident, PLANAGRAM had its hind quarters brushed and became unbalanced. B. Calkin was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 30 May, and to expire at midnight, 16 June 2004.
IN THE JUNGLE was held up for clear running at the 200m..
RACE 6: BRAVERY H'CAP - 1200M.
Trainer R. Maund was fined $50 for failing to notify D. Tanti was the rider of CROWN SILVER within the prescribed time.
A warning was issued to the connections of CHAMPION STAR, which proved difficult to load.
G. McKeon, rider of NOBLE GENT, was charged with careless riding, in that near the 800m. he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of CHAMPION STAR which had to be checked. LION QUEEN and SKIP LUNCH, which were following, were hampered in this incident. After hearing considerable evidence and viewing the film, G. McKeon was given the benefit of a very grave doubt as to whether he was fully responsible, and accordingly the charge was not sustained.
CARLITA MISS shifted in at the 800m. and brushed DANSKER, which became unbalanced. RATE OF KNOTS, which was following, was hampered in this incident.
PETERKIN was obliged to race wide throughout.
When questioned in relation to the disappointing performance of CARLITA MISS, trainer A. Bailey reported that the mare's current racing program would be reviewed as he was disappointed with the performance, and that in all likelihood CARLITA MISS would be spelled. A veterinary examination of CARLITA MISS failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
RACE 7: DENISE'S JOY H'CAP - 1200M.
WESTERN BRACE jumped away awkwardly and brushed the starting gate, and as a result D. Tanti momentarily lost the use of his near side iron.
HUGE YEAR shifted out at the start and made contact with SACRED HILL.
WESTERN BRACE and TREASURE THE KWILA were both obliged to race wide in the early and middle stages.
In the early stages of the straight, ON THE LIST was held up for clear running.
After leaving the 400m., FIRES OF IRELAND shifted out from behind the heels of WESTERN BRACE, making contact with OMNITRADER, taking that runner out on to SACRED HILL.
Approaching the 200m., ON THE LIST shifted out from behind the heels of WESTERN BRACE, taking FIRES OF IRELAND out on to OMNITRADER.
D. Tanti, rider of WESTERN BRACE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 100m. he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of ON THE LIST, resulting in ON THE LIST being taken out on to FIRES OF IRELAND, resulting in that horse shifting out on to OMNITRADER, which had to be checked. D. Tanti was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 29 May, and to expire at midnight, 11 June 2004.
Stable foreman Mr S. Foster expressed concern as to G. McKeon's riding of ON THE LIST, particularly in the early stages. He indicated that had been instructed to lead and was concerned G. McKeon may not have used sufficient effort to lead. G. McKeon stated that in the run to the first turn he felt his mount did not have the pace to cross 5 runners on the inside and rather than be trapped 5 wide rounding the first turn he took the option to move on to the rails and race behind FIRES OF IRELAND, which placed him in a better position than being obliged to race wide. He added that in the straight, ON THE LIST was badly held up for clear running, and near the 100m. suffered interference and had to switch around the heels of WESTERN BRACE in an endeavor to gain clear running. Whilst stewards noted the concerns of S. Foster, the circumstances in relation to G. McKeon's riding tactics in the early stages were noted.
RACE 8: MODE H'CAP - 1300M.
G. McKeon was substituted as the rider of BLACK HULA for acceptable reasons when B. Smith was unable to fulfil his engagement on that horse.
ULTRA SWING jumped away awkwardly.
FUN FOR US and ENABLER were both held up for clear running from the 200m. to the finish.
When questioned in relation to the performance of I SCREAM, trainer's representative Mr D. Brown indicated that the horse travelled well throughout, however failed to respond to S. Galloway's riding in the straight and was of the opinion that the horse may have had enough racing this campaign, and in all probability would be spelled. A veterinary examination of I SCREAM failed to reveal any abnormality.
ALL WINNERS AND CARLITA MISS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
