Race 1: Laurel Park F&M NMW - 1200m.
1st - Canadian Shuffle 2nd - Winner's Choice 3rd - Effectively 4th - Indi Rhythm
On jumping away, MISS STRONGHOLD dipped.
SUUBIRD shifted in on jumping away and steadied from the heels of SUNRISE ROAD.
At the start, ODONATA jumped awkwardly and checked from the heels of MARGARET ELAINE, which blundered at the start and shifted outwards.
SUUBIRD moved in towards the rails near the 1100m., causing DANERIN to ease.
Near the 900m., SUUBIRD steadied from the heels of EFFECTIVELY.
Jockey M Pelling was questioned as to the reason why he eased to the outside of EBBTIDE about 40 metres before the winning post. Jockey M. Pelling stated that his mount was making ground quickly and he was under the impression that EBBTIDE was commencing to move inwards and he elected to seek a clear passage on the outside of that mare. M. Pelling's explanation was accepted.
Race 2: QRSE Santa Anita Class 6 H'cap - 1807m.
1st - Listen Pal 2nd - Hamah 3rd - Press 4th - Winsome Loot
As A. Kennedy was ill, P. Hammersley was substituted as the rider of SEA ARTIST and Carlton Bru (Race 5), and S. Seamer was the rider of Habitually (Race 3.
The saddle on UNION RULE shifted forward about 20 metres after the start, placing T. Treichel at a disadvantage in controlling his mount.
Near the 1750m., ESSJAYPEE clipped the heels of UNION RULE.
After passing the 1300m., DEAD CAT BOUNCE steadied from the heels of UNION RULE, which shifted out.
After being held up near the 450m., ZYLVESTER shifted outwards to obtain a clear passage when racing behind UNION RULE.
DEAD CAT BOUNCE and PRESS were forced to race wide for the major part of the journey.
MAIZY MAY was held up for a clear passage between the 500m. until approaching the 200m..
WINSOME LOOT was forced to race wide in the early stages of the event.
CRIMSON GOWN cast its off hind plate during the running of the race.
The club's veterinary surgeon reported that UNION RULE returned to the enclosure galloped on on its off hind leg.
Race 3: Woodbine 2yo H'cap - 1000m.
1st - Meriwether 2nd - Six Crowns 3rd - Beaucappa 4th - Vitruvian
On jumping away, BEAUCAPPA veered outwards.
GO ROCK AND ROBIN was slow to move when the gates were released, losing ground, and approaching the home turn, steadied from the heels of SIX CROWNS, shifted outwards and then steadied from the heels of LONDON ROAD.
At the 900m., CHRISTOPER ROBIN shied in away from MERIWETHER, causing HABITUALLY to be eased when tightened between CHRISTOPER ROBIN and SEQUALA MAGIC. Jockey S. Seamer reported that HABITUALLY failed to stride out thereafter until making the home turn. When clear of other runners, HABITUALLY commenced to make ground.
At the 800m., BEAUCAPPA, whilst racing greenly, shifted in, bumping PRIME JEWEL on to CHRISTOPHER ROBIN and HABITUALLY, causing those horses to lose ground.
At the 600m., BEAUCAPPA hung in, tightening MERIWETHER on to LONDON ROAD, which eased, losing ground.
MERIWETHER was inclined to lay out for the major part of the event.
LONDON ROAD and BEAUCAPPA cast their off fore plates in running.
Race 4: Hollywood Park NMW H'cap - 1500m.
1st - Blue Sky Mining 2nd - Snippety Snip 3rd - Sagamore 4th - King Latarmiss
Permissions was given for SNIPPETY SNIP to race bare behind when the farrier had removed both hind plates and the gelding became extremely agitated. An announcement was made to this effect over the public address system.
QUESTWIN and SOMETHING FOR KATE were slow to move when the gates were released.
Near the 800m., QUESTWIN steadied from the heels of KING LATARMISS.
CUT OF DIAMONDS, SAGAMORE and JUST CASSIDY were inclined to pull hard in the middle stages of the race.
BANNOCK BAY raced wide for the major part of the event.
Race 5: Aqueduct H'cap - 1500m.
1st - Scenic Wells 2nd - Celtic Trial 3rd - Drunken Joker 4th - Treasure The Kwila
Between 1200m. and 1000m., SLIPSTREAM, when being eased, threw its head in the air.
DRUNKEN JOKER was unable to improve its position when racing behind CARLTON BRU approaching the home turn and was held up for a clear passage until approaching the 200m. when eased across the heels of CELTIC TRIAL.
After passing the 400m., TAKAS bumped LEGAL BRIEF, and then near the 300m., steadied off the heels of SLIPSTREAM.
SCENIC WELLS was held up for clear running from the 300m. until after passing the 200m. when it shifted out, brushing DRUNKEN JOKER.
N. Jolly, rider of SCENIC WELLS, fumbled with his whip near the 300m..
Approaching the winning post, J. P. Stanley, rider of DRUNKEN JOKER, was unable to use his whip when racing in restricted room as CELTIC TRIAL shifted out slightly under pressure.
CELTIC TRIAL raced wide for the major part of the event.
The club's veterinary surgeon reported that TREASURE THE KWILA had been galloped on below the near hind hock.
Race 6: QRSE Belmont Park 3yo Class 6 H'cap - 1000m.
1st - Any Suggestion 2nd - Daunting Lad 3rd - Encierro 4th - Love And Money
QUINTEX jumped awkwardly, brushing the outside gate, and shortly afterwards was tightened for room between DAUNTING LAD and LITTLE MISSIE.
BUNSEN HONEYDEW was slow to move when the gates were released, losing ground.
Near the 900m., DAUNTING LAD, which was laying out, brushed LITTLE MISSIE.
DAUNTING LAD was held up for a clear passage between the 500m. and until near the 200m. when the colt shifted out, causing QUINTEX to ease.
Jockey S. Galloway and trainer K. Schweida were asked if they could explain the apparent disappointing performance of COMMERCIAL DANE. Jockey Galloway stated that the colt had travelled well until near the 200m. where it commenced to compound, and near the 750m., had brushed the running rail. Jockey Galloway further stated that in his opinion COMMERCIAL DANE needed today's race. Trainer K. Schweida reported that COMMERCIAL DANE had cast its near fore plate during the running of the race. On viewing the patrol film, this occurred near the 800m.. Mr Schweida added that he was concerned about the loss of the plate as he has had hoof problems with COMMERCIAL DANE. The club's veterinary surgeon could find no abnormality, and specimens were ordered to be taken from COMMERCIAL DANE. Mr Schweida was informed if anything came to his notice with the colt, he was to report this to the stewards.
Race 7: Arlington 1mw last year H'cap - 1400m.
1st - Grey Hombre 2nd - Omnitrader 3rd - Fires Of Ireland 4th - Sir Success
PROUD BUCK began awkwardly, and approaching the 1300m., threw its head in when being steadied.
Near the 1300m., MISSION STATEMENT eased to avoid the heels of SUNGIFT, which shifted out slightly.
Near the 900m., SIR SUCCESS brushed the running rail.
Between the 900m. and 700m., ACTIVE COMBAT, when pulling, steadied from the heels of FIRES OF IRLELAND.
COCKY CRUISER had difficulty in obtaining clear running between the 350m. and approaching the 200m..
Race 8: Churchill Downs E&G NMW - 1200m.
1st - Proud Native 2nd - Tudor Quest 3rd - Fearless Racer 4th - Superstar Leo
Due to transport difficulties, B. Dieckmann was unable to fulfil his engagement on OUR SECRET AGENT and was replaced by G. McKeon.
At the request of jockey M. Pelling, SUPERSTAR LEO was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon at the barriers and passed to fit start.
At the start, OUR SECRET AGENT, KENTUCKY WILDCAT and SUPERSTAR LEO brushed.
FEARLESS RACER jumped awkwardly.
PROUD NATIVE was slow to move when the gates were released, losing ground.
Near the 850m., POWER EXPRESS shifted inwards, carrying THESPIAN PRINCE in. PAST TENSE, which was making ground into a questionable run on the inside of THESPIAN PRINCE, checked and lost ground. Jockey S. Galloway, rider of POWER EXPRESS, was informed that although the entire blame could not be attributed to his actions, he was informed to exercise more care in future.
Near the 500m., GARIBALDI steadied from the heels of TUDOR QUEST and shifted out, bumping POWER EXPRESS. THESPIAN PRINCE, which was travelling behind, was inconvenienced.
Near the 450m., POWER EXPRESS shifted out, bumping SUPERSTAR LEO outwards, forcing KENTUCKY WILDCAT, which was inclined to lay outwards, wider on the track. Shortly after, SUPERSTAR LEO, which was unbalanced, inconvenienced FEARLESS RACER, which shifted in, bumping PAST TENSE, causing SUN NEVER SETS to be checked. Following an inquiry, no blame could be attributed to any particular rider.
KEY OF GOLD was forced to cover extra ground.
The club's veterinary surgeon reported that GARIBALDI was found to be sore in the off hind leg following the race. Trainer L. Kelly was advised he would be required to produce a veterinary certificate of soundness for GARIBALDI prior to its next race start.
