SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
As S. Galloway was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Steward Summary Sheet.
Race 1: Killawarra Dusk (QTIS Added Stakes) 2yo H'cap - 1000m.
1st - Sir Monashee 2nd - Matinee 3rd - Picabelle 4th - Line By Line
LINE BY LINE (J. Powell), POISON HONEY (A. Pattillo) and SPECIAL DASH (C. Spry) were slow to begin.
MATINEE (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly.
Shortly after the start, LA MONTAGNA (M. Pelling) shifted out abruptly when inclined to race greenly.
Approaching the 800m., FEAR OF FLYING (D. Browne) had to be eased to avoid the heels of MATINEE, which shifted in.
LA MONTAGNA, FEAR OF FLYING and FOUR KINGS (D. Ballard) raced greenly and were inclined to hang out throughout the race.
Leaving the 100m., FEAR OF FLYING shifted in away from the heels of LA MONTAGNA, then raced ungenerously and shifted in, making contact with POISON HONEY approaching the finishing line.
LINE BY LINE was held up rounding the home turn and was obliged to shift wide on straightening to obtain clear running.
LES JEUX D'ESPRIT lost its off fore plate in running.
Race 2: Cougar Bourbon (QTIS Added Stakes) Class 6 3yo H'cap - 1400m.
1st - Succeeding 2nd - Son Of Dane 3rd - Rast Sim 4th - Star Of Asia
FOREIGN TITLE (M. Pelling) pulled hard rounding the first turn.
STAR OF ASIA (D. Ballard) was caught 3 wide after the start and raced 3 wide for the remainder of the race.
Approaching the 1200m., SUCCEEDING (J. Byrne) commenced to overrace and raced ungenerously at the heels of SON OF DANE (N. Jolly) near the 1100m. as the pace slowed.
Near the 1200m., STAR OF ASIA improved up on to the heels of ROCK OF MUFASA (J. Stanley) and had to be checked.
RAST SIM was also inclined to overrace approaching the 1000m. when the pace slowed.
RAST SIM (B. Stewart) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.
SCREAMING HALO (J. Powell) was cramped for room approaching the 400m. when racing between STAR OF ASIA (D. Ballard) and RAST SIM, which attempted to shift out to improve.
Following the event, the club 's veterinary surgeon reported that RAST SIM had sustained a laceration to the inside of the near knee and was also lame in the same leg. Trainer P. Quinn indicated that the horse would now be spelled.
Jockey N. Jolly was fined $500 under AR83(a) for misconduct in the weighing area following race 2. In accordance with Local Rule 36(h), stewards ordered that $400 be suspended for a period of 6 months on the condition that N. Jolly does not breach that rule or rules of a similar nature within that period of time.
Race 3: QRSE GPO Hotel H'cap - 2100m.
1st - Celtic Trial 2nd - Image Of Reality 3rd - Ultimate Command 4th - Maizcay Magic
STAR CLANG (Y. Yamazaki) and PISTOL KNIGHT (G. Birney) came together on jumping away.
Approaching the 100m., CELTIC TRIAL (J. Byrne) shifted ground outwards abruptly.
The connections of PISTOL KNIGHT were questioned as to the performance of the horse, which pulled extremely hard in the middle stages and compounded on straightening. P.G. Birney stated that it had been intended to lead on PISTOL KNIGHT, however after being challenged by COLD START at the 1800m., he elected to ease his mount as the rider of COLD START appeared intent on leading. P.G. Birney added that after COLD START had assumed the lead the pace slowed and PISTOL KNIGHT commenced to pull and this resulted in him having to shift out off heels and allow the horse to stride forward to the lead. P.G. Birney further stated that the horse then continued to pull hard and refused to settle, and he was of the opinion that this had an effect on the horse compounding. Trainer S. Dwyer confirmed the instructions to lead, however agreed that PISTOL KNIGHT refused to settle today due to pulling extremely hard, and stated that he would give consideration to removing the blinkers from the horse prior to the horse's next race start. A veterinary examination of PISTOL KNIGHT failed to reveal any abnormality.
A veterinary examination of ULTIMATE COMMAND (K. Pope) revealed a laceration to the outside of the off knee.
Race 4: Toni & Guy Class 6 H'cap - 1800m.
1st - Simply Viv 2nd - Run A Muk 3rd - Working Class Man 4th - Appleby
Near the 1600m., BACKSTAGE GIRL (M. Pelling) got its head up and raced ungenerously when steadied off the heels of BLU SKY MINING (J. Byrne).
BACKSTAGE GIRL continued to overrace and near the 800m. again had to be eased off the heels of BLU SKY MINING.
After leaving the 800m., TELE SERIES (A. Best) commenced to pull hard, shifted out and brushed BLU SKY MINING.
RUN A MUCK (B. Hull) shifted out over the final 200m..
THUNDER HAWK (J. Stanley) raced wide throughout the race.
Race 5: City News Sprint 1mw Last Year - 1000m.
1st - Zoe's Lad 2nd - So Equal 3rd - Helter Skelter 4th - Sovereign Express
A protest lodged by G. Birney, rider of 3rd placegetter, SO EQUAL, against HELTER SKELTER (B. Hull) being declared 2nd, alleging interference at the 700m. and again over the final 75 metres was upheld. Stewards were satisfied that HELTER SKELTER had shifted ground over the final 75 metres, making contact with SO EQUAL, causing that horse to be hampered. The Judge's placings were amended to read: No.7 - ZOE'S Lad; No. 5. SO EQUAL - 2nd; No. 2 - HELTER SKELTER - 3rd; SOVEREIGN EXPRESS - 4thj. Apprentice B. Hull was reprimanded and instructed to take greater measures to keep his mounts straight in the run to the finish.
CANADIAN TIME (P. Hammersley) was slow to begin.
ZOE'S LAD was tightened at the start between HELLENIC WARRIOR, which jumped inwards, and SPINARDO, which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.
Near the 700m., SO EQUAL (G. Birney) had to be eased to avoid the heels of HELTER SKELTER, which shifted in.
Race 6: QRSE Skyy Blue 1200m. H'cap - 1200m.
1st - Proudly Agro 2nd - Sir Dan 3rd - Huddle 4th - Gullcatcher
HUDDLE (J. Taylor), which was a little slow to jump, was hampered by NOBLE GENT (A. Pattillo), which shifted in.
DANE NEWS (J. Powell) jumped awkwardly.
Near the 800m., HUDDLE was cramped for room by DANE NEWS (J. Powell), which was taken in by KATENIAN (B. Stewart).
J. Taylor reported that DANE NEWS got its tongue over the bit during the event.
M. Pelling reported that TELLEM did not finish the race off over the concluding stages as expected and was somewhat disappointing. Trainer K. Kemp reported that the horse may not have been comfortable racing in restricted room in the middle stages inside of other runners, however agreed that the performance today was disappointing in contrast to its previous start, adding that he would monitor the horse's progress following today's race. Mr Kemp undertook to notify stewards of anything that may come to his attention that had any bearing on the disappointing performance.
A veterinary examination of NOBLE GENT, which compounded, revealed no abnormalities.
Race 7: QRSE XXXX Gold Class 6 H'cap - 1400m.
1st - Video Hits 2nd - Tarrasch 3rd - Lust For Victory 4th - Matey
DELAGO DUMPER (D. Ballard) and CHAMPION STAR (M. Pelling) were a shade slow to begin.
CHAMPION STAR and COLLINGWOOD STORM (K. Pope) were both caught wide rounding the first turn and raced wide for the majority of the race.
Approaching the 800m., MUSHOOD (A. Best) had to be steadied off the heels of MATEY (B. Stewart) and shifted out, taking MILADY MATTY (G. McKeon) out 3 wide, forcing that horse to race 3 wide for the remainder of the race.
CEDAR LODGE (J. Taylor) was inclined to pull hard rounding the first turn.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of CHAMPION STAR, M. Pelling stated after missing the start he was then caught wide, however when asked for an effort on straightening, the horse failed to respond to his riding. M. Pelling agreed that the performance was disappointing as did trainer Mr T. Catip. Mr Catip stated that the fact that the horse missed the start and then was obliged to race 3 wide and had gone up significantly in weight since its last start may have been factors that had some bearing on the disappointing performance. Mr Catip also indicated that the horse had pleased in its work in preparation for today's race and undertook to notify stewards of anything that might have had some bearing on the disappointing run today.
Stewards questioned J. Byrne regarding the performance of TROPICAL EXPRESS, which was held up in the early stages of the straight, however did not finish the race off as expected when the horse obtained clear running. J. Byrne stated that when travelling back in the field on the rails he became held up rounding the turn and had hoped to get the horse to the outside as it has shown in the past to finish its races off best when coming to the outside. He stated in today's race he was a victim of circumstances in that he could not get to the outside and was held up for clear running for some distance after straightening.
Race 8: Napoleon Purdis No MW H'cap - 1200m.
1st - Carlino 2nd - Secret Goldmine 3rd - Mister De Bali 4th - Peterkin
MENZENTSEVA was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 2.08 p.m..
SECRET GOLDMINE proved difficult to load. As the horse had proved difficult to load on previous occasons, the nomination of SECRET GOLDMINE will be refused in accordance with AR50 until such time as the horse performs a minimum of 2 satisfactory official barriers trials.
Shortly after the start, REGENCY PEARL (K. Pope) and SECRET GOLDMINE (G. McKeon) was tightened for room between FEARLESS RACER (M. Pelling) and MISTER DE BALI (B. Stewart), both of which shifted ground.
GLOUCESTER ROAD (Y. Yamazaki) and ENCLAVE (D. Ballard) raced in restricted room leaving the 1100m. when tightened for room by CARLINO (D. Browne), which shifted in. D. Browne was cautioned and advised to provide more room in future.
FEARLESS RACER (M. Pelling) was caught wide rounding the first turn and raced wide for the entire race.
SECRET GOLDMINE shifted away from the rails near the 400m., taking CARLINO out onto MISTER DE BALI.
MISTER DE BALI was caught 3 wide and raced 3 wide throughout.
ALL WINNERS MAIZCAY MAGIC AND ROCK OF MUFASA WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
