Shortly after the start GEETEEHAYCHO (B. El-Issa) clipped the heels of AMUSED (J. Byrne), which shifted in, and blundered. J. Byrne was advised to exercise care.

TRENDY TIME (A. Merritt) was inclined to overrace in the early stages.

Approaching the 800m BLUE OYSTER (C. Spry) and UNBOUND (J. Taylor) had to be steadied due to the lack of speed and shifted wider on the track. BLUE OYSTER was then forced to race wide for the remainder of the event.

From the 300m until after passing the 100m GEETEEHAYCHO was held up for clear running.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of AMUSED, jockey J. Byrne stated that after obtaining a position one off near the 1300m, he was then forced wider approaching the 1000m due to the lack of speed in the early stages. He added that once being caught three wide he elected to allow the mare to stride forward to obtain the lead, however when he obtained the lead, in his opinion AMUSED was still travelling comfortably and when asked for an effort shortly after straightening he was of the opinion that the mare failed to accelerate as she had done on previous occasions and may not have been fully comfortable on today's rain-affected track. Stable foreman Mr S. Iverson stated the mare was racing for her third consecutive week, however she had trained on well leading up to today's event. He added that given the mare's previous performances on rain-affected tracks, she may not have been totally comfortable. A post-race veterinary examination of AMUSED revealed that the mare had bled from both nostrils and a swab sample was taken. As this was the first occasion on which AMUSED had bled, it will incur a mandatory three-month bar from racing.

SAMMYS ILLUSION (R. McMahon) was inclined to hang out from approaching the 600m until shortly after straightening.

When questioned regarding his riding of EMIT TIME in the early stages of the straight, apprentice B. Dieckmann stated that instructions were to have the colt in a handy position in the early stages and allow EMIT TIME to balance up in the early stages of the straight and to place him under pressure near the 250m. Trainer M. Webb confirmed the instructions and added that it is the connections' opinion that EMIT TIME has only a short sprint.

A post-race veterinary examination of SAMMYS ILLUSION failed to reveal any abnormality.

PROPHET JEWEL was held up in the early stages of the straight.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of SPUR ME ON, jockey B. Pengelly stated that in his opinion the gelding was never comfortable on today's track conditions. Stable foreperson Ms K. Loy stated that she was at a loss to explain today's performance other than to state that SPUR ME ON had worked well leading in to today's event. She added that the horse may not have been comfortable on today's rain-affected track. A post-race veterinary examination of SPUR ME ON failed to reveal any abnormality. Ms Loy undertook to advise stewards of anything that comes to light in subsequent days which may explain the performance.

Race 4: THE DARLEY GROUP COUNTRY CUP - 1400M

Jockey P. Hammersley reported that the bit pulled through to the offside of VICTORY SIREN, placing him at a disadvantage. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that VICTORY SIREN had sustained a laceration to the tongue.

Trainer G. McDonald expressed concerns over the ride by A. Merritt on DOUBLE PORTION, especially the reasons for the gelding being at the rear of the field. A. Merritt stated that his instructions were to have DOUBLE PORTION forward, however after being tightened for room shortly after the start he had no other option but to go back, placing him at the rear of the field. DOUBLE PORTION then commenced to race ungenerously with him until near the 400m. Trainer G. McDonald confirmed these instructions, however after viewing the films conceded that jockey Merritt did receive some pressure shortly after the start. After viewing the films, stewards advised Mr McDonald they had no concerns with jockey Merritt's ride, given that he did lose his position shortly after the start and as a result was forced to race further back in the field than anticipated.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of TACKMAN, apprentice R. McMahon stated that the gelding travelled well in the early stages but after passing the 800m failed to respond to his riding. He added that in his opinion the gear change today to remove the blinkers may not have assisted. A post-race veterinary examination of TACKMAN failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
