From BTC meeting, 5.7.06

Stewards today questioned B. Stewart as to why he stopped riding CHANCE BAY near the 100m in race 5 at Doomben on 5 July 2006. B. Stewart stated that after testing his mount in the straight, the horse was inclined to lay in behind the heels of HALLUCE’S DEVOTION near the 100m, and this resulted in him having to stop riding and straighten his mount. He added that had he not stopped riding and straightened, he may have run up on to the heels of HALLUCE’S DEVOTION. The explanation was noted.

Race 1: Hamilton Hotel QTIS 2yo H’cap – 1400m
1st – My Centurion 2nd – Princess Norma 3rd – Plachutta 4th - Erembourg

TORINO LUGE (G. Lynch), which jumped away awkwardly, was tightened shortly after the start between TRIPLE YOUR LUCK (S. Scriven) and INJEBRECK (B. Stewart) when both horses shifted ground.

SHOULDAWON (A. Merritt) jumped away awkwardly.

SO HIGHFALUTIN (K. Pope) and PLACHUTTA (G. Colless) brushed on jumping away.

THE SUNSHINE MAN (M. Cahill) was slow to begin.

PLACHUTTA (G. Colless) was held up for clear running in the straight until approaching the 100m.

Near the 100m, THE SUNSHINE MAN was inconvenienced and obliged to shift out off the heels of TRIPLE YOUR LUCK, which was taken out by KING’S CRUSADE (C. Spry) and PLACHUTTA (G. Colless), which shifted out from behind the heels of MY CENTURION (J. Bowditch). G. Colless was cautioned and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

PRINCESS NORMA (A. Pattillo) shifted ground inwards over the concluding stages and brushed MY CENTURION (J. Bowditch).

Stewards questioned G. Lynch as to the disappointing performance of TORINO LUGE. G. Lynch stated that after being checked at the start the horse seemed somewhat reluctant to race for some distance after that, however between the 300m and 100m, whilst the horse ran on only fairly, he felt the gelding’s run ended and that he was of the opinion that TORINO LUGE may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer R. Maund stated that, in his opinion, the horse may be looking for further in its races, and if he decided to continue with the horse’s preparation, he may experiment with blinkers.

When questioned as to PLACHUTTA racing closer to the lead today, G. Colless stated that the horse lost its footing at the start at its previous start at Doomben and this resulted in the horse settling further back in the field than anticipated.

Leaving the 800m, NEDIYM’S IMAGE (A. Merritt) shifted out away from LADY OF COURAGE (N. Tomizawa), which was inclined to lay out away from the rails, and this resulted in ROSIELEE MISS (S. Scriven) being taken out on to COURT ADJOURNED (J. Warrington) and having to be checked.

At the 400m, ALADDINS LION (J. Byrne) shifted out to improve and made contact with WESTGATE (R. Martin).

When questioned as to his riding of ROMAN SQUIRE over the concluding stages, A. Pattillo stated that the horse has shown resentment when struck with the whip and when he attempted to hit the horse on the near side, ROMAN SQUIRE was inclined to lay in, which necessitated him having to pull the whip through and use it on the off side. Trainer R. Dawson confirmed that the horse has shown a resentment for the whip in the past and its use has been restricted.

Stewards questioned trainer L. Birchley as to the disappointing performance of SIR SUCCESS, which compounded over the final 300m. L. Birchley stated that it was anticipated that the horse would be ridden just off the pace, however as gelding was caught 3 wide outside the leader approaching the first turn, S. Scriven had no alternative other than to allow the horse to stride forward to the lead. L. Birchley added that SIR SUCCESS was not suited leading. A post race veterinary examination of SIR SUCCESS failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.
