As S. Katsidis was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Race Day Summary sheet.
Race 1: UBER 2MW LY H’CAP – 2218M
1st – Rapid Reason 2nd – Milady Clang 3rd – Hanalei Bay 4th – Promulgate
JEDEPHRAE (G. Colless) blundered on jumping away.
PROMULGATE (M. Price) was caught three wide in the early and middle stages.
PROMULGATE shifted out rounding the home turn and bumped MILADY CLANG (J. Byrne) on two occasions.
Race 2: RED CARPET PRINCESS QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 1200M
1st – Pepperwood 2nd – Naval Port 3rd – The Muse 4th – Culminante
TAYANSO was a late scratching at 11.48 a.m. on veterinary advice.
FLASH BANG was a late scratching at 1.11 p.m. by stewards acting on veterinary advice after the horse dislodged A. Coome when proceeding to the barriers. Following the late withdrawal of FLASH BANG, all monies invested on the horse were ordered to be refunded in full, with deductions of 8 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets and 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets to apply to bets placed prior to 1.11 p.m.
After leaving the 1000m SHE’S JUST DREAMY (P. Wolfgram) was tightened between CULMINANTE (J. Holder), which shifted in, and HODGES STREET (W. Pearson), which was inclined to shift out when racing ungenerously. Whilst the racing manners of HODGES STREET contributed to the tightening, J. Holder was nonetheless reprimanded under AR. 137(a) for failing to provide sufficient room when crossing. THE MUSE (N. Thomas), which was following SHE’S JUST DREAMY, also had to be steadied in this incident.
For some distance after rounding the first turn HODGES STREET got its head up and raced ungenerously at the heels of CULMINANTE.
A veterinary examination of HODGES STREET following the event revealed the horse to be suffering from metabolic heat syndrome. Trainer B. Baldwin reported that he would recommend to connections that HODGES STREET be gelded.
Race 3: B105 QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1400M
1st – Three Chances 2nd – Blackwoods Choice 3rd – Thundering Girl 4th – Mr Doyle
KING LEONIDAS (J. Byrne) had to be checked and blundered when tightened on jumping away between ANGEL GIRL (J. Bowditch), which jumped outwards, and BLACKWOODS CHOICE (K. Forrester), which was taken in by TRIVO (R. McMahon).
Jockey T. Pannell, the rider of GLOSSIEST, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that near the 1300m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of EXORBITANT (G. Colless), causing that runner to be taken in on to FALCONTEN (S. Seamer), resulting in FALCONTEN losing its position when being steadied and then taken across the heels of EXORBITANT. THUNDERING GIRL (J. Taylor), ANGEL GIRL and TRIVO were all inconvenienced as a result. T. Pannell’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, with the period of suspension to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 28 February, and to expire at midnight on Monday, 12 March, 2007.
MR DOYLE (A. Coome) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.
Near the 300m MR DOYLE shifted out abruptly off the heels of the tiring EXORBITANT.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of KING LEONIDAS, J. Byrne stated that after receiving interference at the start the horse settled further back in the field than had been anticipated and whilst the horse did not respond in the straight as expected, he felt the horse may not have been entirely suited by the pattern of the race. J. Byrne agreed that in the straight the horse appeared somewhat disappointing. Trainer B. Guy confirmed the instructions, expecting that the horse be positioned closer to the leaders and after receiving interference also agreed that the horse may not have been suited by the pattern of the race. A veterinary examination of KING LEONIDAS revealed no abnormalities.
Race 4: NAPOLEON PERDIS COSMETICS MARES H’CAP – 1200M
1st – No Mistake 2nd – Schapelle 3rd – Creole 4th – Coonac
TATTYAM (K. Forrester) was slow to jump.
After being a little slow to jump, COONAC (S. Seamer) then got its head up and raced ungenerously, and after being obliged to race four wide in the middle stages the horse continued to race ungenerously when wide.
TATTYAM had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight.
Following the disappointing performance of APPEAR, G. Colless reported that the horse had travelled well until the crossing, however after leaving the crossing it then failed to respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination of APPEAR revealed the horse to be suffering from an abnormally slow rate of recovery.
Race 5: SCHWEPPES H’CAP – 1000M
1st – Foxmore 2nd – Black Suit 3rd – Miss Steen 4th – Tropiqualo
SIR BREAKFAST (G. Colless) jumped away awkwardly.
LION SAFARI (S. Seamer) was slow to jump.
FOXMORE (M. Price) was cramped for room near the 800m by SIR BREAKFAST which, when overracing, shifted in away from DENMARKET (M. Cahill).
SIR MONASHEE (J. Byrne) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and for some distance in the straight until near the 150m.
Apprentice S. Drake, the rider of TROPIQUALO, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that near the 100m she permitted her mount to shift out into the running of QUALO (A. Spinks), resulting in QUALO having to be checked and losing its position. S. Drake’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, with the period of suspension to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 28 February, and to expire at midnight on Monday, 12 March, 2007.
Race 6: INDOOROOPILLY SHOPPING CENTRE 0MW H’CAP – 1600M
1st –House Of Woodwind 2nd – King’s Coup 3rd – What A Guy 4th – Monsoon Sunrise
POPPY POWER was a late scratching at 3.40 p.m. by stewards acting on veterinary advice after the horse took charge of G. Colless in the preliminary and galloped for some distance. Following the late withdrawal of POPPY POWER, all monies invested on the horse were ordered to be refunded in full, with deductions of 8 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets and 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets to apply to bets placed prior to 3.40 p.m.
GAZZAM (A. Merritt) jumped out at the start taking GO GAZZA (B. El-Issa) out on to ACTIVE COMBAT (G. McCarthy) which had to be steadied.
KING’S COUP (S. Drake) and PUSHPIG (K. Forrester) raced three wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of OUR PRIVATE JET, M. Cahill stated that after racing with a trail in the early and middle stages and handy, the horse travelled well, however when racing in restricted room approaching the 600m it seemed to lose interest and in his opinion was not comfortable racing inside horses and he felt this had an effect on the horse not finishing the race off as expected. Trainer B. Baldwin agreed with M. Cahill’s assessment and indicated that OUR PRIVATE JET had raced similarly in the past when obliged to race in restricted room. A post-race veterinary examination of OUR PRIVATE JET revealed no abnormalities.
A veterinary examination of DOONAN DANCER (R. McMahon), which was under pressure before the 600m and did not finish the race off as expected, revealed that the horse was suffering from soreness in the off foreleg.
Race 7: INDOOROOPILLY SHOPPING CENTRE H’CAP – 1400M
1st – Enrique 2nd – Hissy Fit 3rd – Nexgen 4th – Devil
NEVADA GAMBLER (M. Radecker) jumped out at the start and brushed CHINBOK (J. Bowditch).
Leaving the 300m CHINBOK had to be steadied to avoid the heels of NEVADA GAMBLER (M. Radecker) which shifted out to improve.
Apprentice M. Radecker, the rider of NEVADA GAMBLE, was reprimanded under AR. 137(b) and reminded of her obligations to ride her mount right to the finish of the race.
A veterinary examination of SPECIAL SONG (J. Holder) following the event revealed no abnormalities.
Race 8: XXXX GOLD H’CAP – 1200M
1st – Stylish Qualo 2nd – Bitabiff 3rd – Mosso 4th – Feelin Dandy
HALLUCE’S DEVOTION was a late scratching at 10.50 a.m. on veterinary advice.
Near the 200m HARLEY GEORGE (B. El-Issa), which was shifting in under pressure, had to be checked off the heels of BITABIFF (K. Forrester), which was inclined to shift out slightly. Stewards were of the view that whilst HARLEY GEORGE had raced waywardly at that point, K. Forrester was nonetheless reminded of his obligations to keep his mounts straight.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of STAR OF CANADA, G. Colless stated that the horse again today had not raced with the same enthusiasm as it had in its previous campaign. He added that the horse was hard ridden in the early stages, however could not muster any pace whereas previously the horse had shown ample pace to hold a forward position. Trainer A. Bailey agreed that the horse’s runs today and recently had been disappointing and indicated he would discuss the horse’s immediate racing future with the owners. A post-race veterinary examination of STAR OF CANADA revealed no abnormalities.
