Race 6: CARLTON DRAUGHT TATTERSALL’S CUP - 2200m
1st – Ballack 2nd – Fast Future 3rd – Rampant Lion 4th – Bianca/Fort ‘N’ Won
RAMPANT LION was examined behind the barriers by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
On return to scale jockey S. Baster, the rider of BALLACK, which was placed 2nd by the Judge, lodged an objection against FAST FUTURE (M. Pegus) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 150m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the official video, stewards found that near the 150m FAST FUTURE shifted in, taking DEVASTATING (M. Rodd) in, resulting in DEVASTATING making contact with the hind quarters of BALLACK, which became unbalanced. Stewards believed that the interference suffered by BALLACK in the incident exceeded the margin of a short head which separated both horses at the finish and therefore upheld the protest and declared correct weight on the numbers: 7, 13, 1, 5/11 (deadheat). At a subsequent inquiry jockey M. Pegus pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that near the 150m he permitted his mount to shift in a number of horses, dictating the line of DEVASTATING in, causing DEVASTATING to make contact with the hind quarters of BALLACK, which resulted in BALLACK losing its position. M. Pegus’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Thursday, 26 June, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 9 July 2008. In addition, M. Pegus was fined the sum of $750.
Approaching the 1200m when being steadied, BALLACK became unbalanced and shifted in and made contact with the running rail. The saddle on BALLACK shifted forward at this point.
Passing the 1200m MAJESTIC SIGHT (C. Brown) improved on to the heels of DEVASTATING (M. Rodd) and had to be steadied.

Passing the 1300m LITTER improved up on to the heels of FRITZ’S PRINCESS (D. Spriggs) and had to be steadied.
QUIZZICAL LADY, SATSANG (B. Stewart) and LASORON (R. McMahon) were all forced to race wide throughout.
Passing the 400m FRITZ’S PRINCESS shifted out and made contact with FABIARNA (S. Scriven), forcing FABIARNA out on to the heels of ALVERTA (G. Schofield). FRITZ’S PRINCESS was then momentarily held up for clear running.
The veterinary surgeon reported that FABIARNA developed a severe case of the thumps following the event. Trainer B. Guy was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for FABIARNA prior to its next start.
