G. Colless, the rider of CORNWALL PARK, reported that he was disappointed for a run shortly after straightening between WILLYCLANG and HIS BOY ELROY (S. Galloway). G. Colless added that he was again disappointed for clear running between HIS BOY ELROY and ALBERTON PARK when ALBERTON PARK shifted in, and as a consequence he was forced to take hold of CORNWALL PARK until such time as he could place it to the outside of ALBERTON PARK, finally obtaining clear running near the 100m. G. Colless also reported that CORNWALL PARK had a tendency to lay in, which resulted in him having difficulty moving the horse wider on the track.
Following the running of Race 1 the track was upgraded to GOOD 3.

ATTALLUS (S. Seamer) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey B. El-Issa in respect to the seemingly disappointing performance of HANGOVER HENRY. B. El-Issa explained that the slow pace of the race did not suit his mount, and when he commenced to improve passing the 600m HANGOVER HENRY hung in and proved difficult to ride out thereafter. B. El-Issa added that he was very disappointed with the gelding’s efforts and he recommended to connections that the horse be sent for a spell. Trainer D. Murphy informed stewards that he was disappointed with the performance of HANGOVER HENRY and advised that the horse had performed disappointingly when backing up previously. GAG ORDER (M. Speers) overraced in the early stages.
DECIBELLA was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. Speers, the rider of GAG ORDER, in respect to the reasons he did not attempt to hold a position to the inside of MOONAN KATHLEEN (J. Wood) and behind SPANISH FLING (J. Taylor) in the middle stages of the race, which allowed MOONAN KATHLEEN to take advantage of that position. M. Speers stated that GAG ORDER is a horse that needs plenty of galloping room and he did not feel it would be in his best interests if he were to push GAG ORDER up into a tight position to the inside of MOONAN KATHLEEN. M. Speers added that he was also conscious of the fact that he had J. Bowditch (AURTOBE) to his outside on a lesser performed horse and he was of the opinion that he would be able to move that horse wider on the track and afford his mount clear running upon straightening. Apprentice Speers went on to add that he was unable to get GAG ORDER to the outside in the straight due to AURTOBE racing to his outside and explained that he was forced to go to the inside to obtain clear running, which in his opinion does not suit GAG ORDER. His explanation was noted.

Cahill could offer no explanation, advising stewards that he was able to secure a good run throughout the race and whilst the horse travelled well into the straight, when a run appeared inside FEMINA FASHION, UNICA BAHAYA was immediately under pressure to take that run and failed to respond to his riding thereafter and proved disappointing. Trainer D. Murphy stated that in his opinion UNICA BAHAYA may have settled a little too close to the lead today and overraced, which may have had an effect on the horse’s capacity to finish the race off. Mr Murphy added that he was nonetheless disappointed with UNICA BAHAYA’s performance and he would report to stewards in the days subsequent to the event anything that may come to light which may explain the horse’s performance, including the results of blood tests. A post-race veterinary examination of UNICA BAHAYA revealed the filly had been galloped on, sustaining a minor laceration to the near hind leg, however was not lame at the time of examination.
Jockey P. Hammersley, the rider of TASTY TIDBIT, reported that when the pace slackened near the 900m his mount commenced to overrace at the heels of UNICA BAHAYA and his saddle shifted forward. P. Jockey C. Munce, the rider of SCHIPPER. reported that in the early stages of the straight he was held up behind CAPTAIN CLAYTON and whilst he was able to ride his mount along aggressively hands and heels, he was unable to fully test the filly until a point leaving the 200m when UNICA BAHAYA, which was racing to his outside, commenced to weaken, which afforded him an opportunity to place SCHIPPER into clear running.

Cassidy added that when he afforded REGAL CASTANEA clear running in the straight the gelding failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. He added that in his opinion the horse had come to the end of its preparation and had recommended to connections that it be spelled. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore fetlock. Trainer R. Macrae’s stable representative advised stewards that the horse would be sent for an immediate spell.
Stewards sought an explanation from trainer S. Ryan in respect to the apparent change of riding tactics employed on STEEL LIPS today. Mr Ryan stated that he had given jockey J. Byrne no specific instructions and he expected the horse to be in a position mid-field or better. J. Byrne stated that the horse began only fairly today and whilst he intended to ride the horse with cover, the pace in the early and middle stages set by RAGS TO RICHES (S. Scriven) resulted in him settling further back than he anticipated. In all the circumstances stewards accepted the explanation tendered.

Near the 200m GROWSIR (J. Byrne), which was racing ungenerously, was tightened for room between UNSUPERVISED (L. Cassidy) and DALZAR (J. Holder), which shifted out under pressure.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne, the rider of GROWSIR, as to the reasons for his mount shifting ground outwards upon entering the home straight, which afforded POOR JUDGE (C. Munce) an opportunity to take advantage of a run which then became available between GROWSIR and LEAPFROG (P. Hammersley). J. Byrne stated that GROWSIR had commenced to lay out leaving the 600m and despite his efforts shifted to a three wide position near the 500m. J. Byrne added that he was able to shift the horse back to assume an orthodox one-off position, however it then again hung out and after receiving contact from POOR JUDGE to his inside, GROWSIR shifted to a position several horses wider on the track upon entering the straight. After hearing the submissions of J. Byrne and viewing the relevant patrol footage, stewards accepted the explanation tendered by jockey Byrne.
