Race 1: Hamilton Hotel 2MW H’Cap – 1400m
1st – Woorim 2nd – Hus Der Lieften 3rd – Jungle Heat 4th – Albert Cadabra
Trainer B. Smith was fined the sum of $100.00 for presenting JUNGLE HEAT late into the saddling enclosure.
A post race veterinary examination of JEDI STARFIGHTER revealed the gelding to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia and had also lost an off hind plate in running. Trainer T. Thomas was advised he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness for JEDI STARFIGHTER including the results of an ECG. JEDI STARFIGHTER must also barrier trial to the satisfaction of stewards before again racing.
A post race veterinary examination of MILLERS WHEEL failed to reveal any abnormalities.
JUNGLE HEAT lost an off hind plate in running.
Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to a Good 3.
Race 2: Hardy Brothers Jewellers QTIS 3YO H’Cap - 1200m
1st – Tunahog 2nd – Emma’s Heart 3rd – Maroon Bells 4th – Princess Qualo
The start of this race was delayed when TUNAHOG (S. Katsidis) sprung an off fore plate when parading behind the barriers.
There was a further delay when FALVELINA (J. Byrne), which was fractious in the barriers, had to be inspected by the veterinary surgeon. FALVELINA was subsequently cleared to race.
JUST A PICCOLO (J. Bowditch) and MAROON BELLS (J. Holder) were slow to begin.
Leaving the 900m TUNAHOG, which commenced to overrace, had to be restrained from the heels of PRINCESS QUALO (L. Cassidy). At the same stage REBEL ROCK STAR (M. Walker) commenced to overrace when being restrained by its rider in an endeavour to take up a position one off the fence behind OUR MR CASHMAN (D. Nikolic).
Near the 350m EDITAVE (C. Munce) had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between REBEL ROCK STAR and JUST A PICCOLO (J. Bowditch), which shifted out slightly to improve.
REDBOLT (J. Taylor) and REBEL ROCK STAR raced wide throughout the event.
Stewards sought an explanation from App R. Hinricks the rider of FLEET ‘N’ FAST and the trainer of that horse C. Williamson regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of the gelding. App Hinricks stated that the horse travelled satisfactorily in a midfield position however, when asked for an effort in the straight it failed to accelerate and proved disappointing in the run to the line. Trainer C. Williamson stated that the horse had worked well in preparation for today’s event however, in light of the horse’s performance today he would now send it for an immediate spell.
A post race veterinary examination of FALVELINA revealed the filly to be exhibiting blood from the near side nostril. As stewards, after hearing the report from the veterinary surgeon, were satisfied that the presence of blood in the near side nostril was attributable to external trauma no embargo was placed on the filly.
A post race veterinary examination of REDBOLT failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: Carlton Mid Class 6 4YO & Up H’Cap - 1200m
1st – Tightrope 2nd – Lotseventy 3rd – The Sixties 4th – Gag Order
SEETHING DUCK (M. Walker) overraced when being restrained to take a rearward position closer to the fence shortly after the start.
FASDEHERE (J. Taylor) overraced at the heels of THE SIXTIES (J. Holder) in the middle stages.
GAG ORDER (S. Katsidis) and SCHMOO (P. Robl) raced wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned in relation to the disappointing performance of MISS MATARI trainer K. Milham reported that the horse was having its first run this preparation and felt it would take benefit from today’s race. App M. Hellyer reported that whilst the horse had received a slight bump rounding the home turn the horse had not finished the race off as expected and shared a similar view to trainer K. Milham that the horse would take benefit from today’s event.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GUNDY SON trainer R. Heathcote indicated that the horse may be coming to the end of its current preparation however, prior to deciding whether to spell the horse he would have tests carried out on the horse. R. Heathcote indicated that dependent upon the results of the tests he would consider the horse’s current program.
A post race veterinary examination of SANTIARA (J. Byrne) revealed the mare had broke down in the off side fore leg.
Race 4: Australia Post 2YO Stakes - 1400m
1st – Shamillion 2nd – Benny’s Buttons 3rd – Audacious Spirit 4th – Paris Blu
MASTER PATRICK (G. Colless) and BRIDE SALAMA (C. Brown) made contact on jumping away.
CAVALIERED (S. Katsidis) blundered on jumping away.
PARIS BLU (B. El-Issa) jumped away awkwardly.
FROM LONDON (P.Robl) had to be checked at the start when tightened for between STARTSMEUP (J. Byrne) and AUDACIOUS SPIRIT (D. Browne), which shifted out after being bumped by SHAMILLION (S. Scriven).
Leaving the 1200m KATE’S MESSAGE (M. Cahill) had to be checked and was unable to hold its position between FROM LONDON, which shifted out away from the rails and MASTER PATRICK (G. Colless), which when inclined to race ungenerously shifted in slightly. When being straightened MASTER PATRICK then overreacted and shifted out onto MILANESA (D. Dunn) forcing it to be inconvenienced and taken wider.
Near the 1100m SHAMILLION and D’JET (J. Bowditch) were crowded for room when HIERARCHY (N. Rawiller) shifted in when not quite clear. N. Rawiller the rider of HIERARCHY was advised that in future he must provide more clearance than he had done on this occasion.
Near the 1000m BENNY’S BUTTONS (B. Pengelly) shifted in onto SHAMILLION, which was overracing, resulting in D’JET being tightened for room between SHAMILLION and ARDECHE (B. Shinn). B. Pengelly the rider of BENNY’S BUTTONS was advised that in future he must provide more clearance than he had done on this occasion. AUDACIOUS SPIRIT and CAVALIERED (S. Katsidis), which were trailing, had to be steadied as a consequence.
PARIS BLU (B. El-Issa) raced wide in the early stages until assuming the lead near the 800m.
SHAMILLION raced wide until assuming the position outside the leader near the 700m.
Approaching the 400m ARDECHE shifted out around the heels of BENNY’S BUTTONS to improve and in doing so forced D’JET out onto STARTSMEUP. In this incident D’JET was crowded and had to be steadied.
Approaching the finishing line MILANESA (D. Dunn) shifted in when tiring and made contact with the hind quarters of I’LLBETRICKED (App M. Hellyer).
STARTSMEUP raced wide throughout the event.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of ARDECHE jockey B. Shinn explained that the horse had travelled well throughout the race however, when asked for an effort the horse had not responded as anticipated. B. Shinn added that he felt the horse may have come to the end of its current preparation.
J. Holder reported that he was instructed to ride TIT TAT TOOEE from a rearward position and when he restrained the horse to comply with those instructions it threw its head up and lost more ground than he would have liked.
C. Brown reported that BRIDE SALAMA, despite his urgings, was reluctant to race inside of other runners.
HIERARCHY (N. Rawiller) lost a near fore plate in running.
A post race veterinary examination of a AUDACIOUS SPIRIT revealed the colt to be lame in the off fore leg. Trainer G. Heinrich was advised the she must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness for AUDACIOUS SPIRIT before the horse again races.
Race 5: Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup - 2200m
1st – Mirrasalo 2nd – Indikator 3rd – Beatboy 4th – Rainbow Styling
FROZONE (S. Seamer) jumped away awkwardly.
PRIX DU SANG (C. Brown) began awkwardly and lost ground.
COURT RULER (L. Cassidy) was momentarily tightened on jumping away between MY LIMIT (J. Byrne) and NAADJI (C. Munce), which shifted out.
PLEASURE TIME (App M. Speers), CASTLE HEIGHTS (S. Scriven) and NAADJI all raced wide in the early stages.
Near the 800m MIRRASALO (D. Dunn) shifted out around the heels of BEATBOY (M. Walker) taking THE GROGOCH (J. Taylor) three wide.
Near the 300m PRIX DU SANG shifted out to improve around the heels of CASTLE HEIGHTS (S. Scriven) and in doing so severely crowded PLEASURE TIME (App M. Speers) out onto the hind quarters of BEATBOY.
INDIKATOR (G. Colless) was held up for clear running until a point approaching the 200m.
Trainer R. Heathcote reported that he was disappointed with the performance of MY LIMIT today and despite the horse being wide from the 600m it failed to finish the race off as expected. R. Heathcote indicated that he would have veterinary tests carried out on the horse and undertook to advise stewards of the results of these tests. A post race veterinary examination of MY LIMIT failed to reveal any abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FROZONE jockey S. Seamer explained he felt the horse may not have suited being backed up from last Saturday’s Ipswich Cup as the horse seems to perform best when its runs are spaced.
EKSTREME lost an near hind plate in running.
Race 6: IPG Print – W.J. Healy Stakes - 1200m
1st – Hay List 2nd – Pinwheel 3rd – Ego’s Dare 4th - Forestreno
FUNTANTES (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
MR SLICK (B. El-Issa) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out at the start.
In the early stages DAUNTING LAD (S. Seamer) overraced at the heels of BOLD GLANCE (J. Holder) and had to be steadied on several occasions approaching the first turn. THE JACKAL (R. Thompson), which was trailing DAUNTING LAD, also overraced in the early stages and had to be steadied on several occasions from the heels of DAUNTING LAD.
FIRST COMMAND raced three wide without cover throughout the event.
EGO’S DARE (C. Brown) and FUNTANTES (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout the event.
MR SLICK raced extremely wide throughout the event.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of FIRST COMMAND jockey D. Dunn explained that despite being obliged to race three wide without cover the horse raced below expectation today and did not finish the race off as expected. D. Dunn added that connections indicated that FIRST COMMAND may now be spelled.
A post race veterinary examination of FIRST COMMAND failed to reveal any abnormalities.
HAY LIST lost an off fore plate in running.
Race 7: Sky Racing Winter Fillies & Mares Stakes - 1400m
1st – Melito 2nd – Wealth Princess 3rd – Beaded 4th – Culminate
MESSENGER (J. Byrne) and DEER VALLEY (D. Nikolic) slow to begin.
SET FOR FAME (B. Shinn) overraced early stages of event.
DEER VALLEY raced wide throughout event.
A post race veterinary examination of PRIMA NOVA (S. Scriven) revealed the mare to be lame in the near side for leg. Trainer A. Cummings’ representative will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before PRIMA NOVA again races.
Race 8: Centenary Classic Mile – 1600m
1st – Pennacchio 2nd – Firebolt 3rd – Secrets Untold 4th – La Etoile
LA ETOILE (C. Munce) had to be steadied shortly after the start between ROCKDALE (D. Browne) and SIR TIME KEEPER (L. Cheshire), which was taken out by PARFUMER (L. Cassidy).
FUTURE’S DREAM (B. El-Issa) was a little slow to begin.
For some distance approaching the 1200m CORNWALL PARK (S. Seamer) raced ungenerously when in restricted room between FUTURE’S DREAM and LUMINOUS EYES (B. Shinn) and near the 1200m had to be restrained from the heels of EIRE OF MAGIC (M. Walker), which lost ground when being restrained from the heels of PARFUMER.
S. Seamer the rider of CORNWALL PARK reported that from its difficult barrier he was instructed to position the horse in a rearward position and as a result of the tempo of the race the horse was a considerable margin from the leaders in the middle stages. He added that whilst the horse finished the race off fairly in hindsight it may have been better served racing in a more forward position.
