Race 1: Bank Of Queensland New Farm 1MW Win Last Year – 1000m
1st – Decibella 2nd – Shakeva 3rd – Nostrum 4th – Tisani Boy

REALLY WICKED (M. Speers) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

BRAEBROOK (B. Pengelly) was slow to begin.

Leaving the 600m, JAD (P. Hammersley) was forced to race in restricted room for a short distance between DECIBELLA (S. Katsidis) and SWIRLING MOSS (J. Taylor), which was taken in slightly by SECTAGONAL (J. Byrne).

MORCOMBE (S. Bogenhuber) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and until a point passing the 200m.

SECTAGONAL (J. Byrne) raced wide throughout.

B. Stewart, rider of NOSTRUM, reported that approaching the 300m he attempted to obtain clear running between SHAKEVA and SIR MONASHEE, however was unable to take advantage of that run when SIR MONASHEE shifted out slightly when tiring. B. Stewart added that he considered moving NOSTRUM to the inside of SIR MONASHEE, however he was unsure whether there was a full run to that horse’s inside and instead chose to persist for clear running to the outside. B. Stewart further stated that a clear run became available shortly after the 200m and NOSTRUM then finished the race off quite well.

J. Holder reported that it was his intention to ride SIR MONASHEE with a sit, however after beginning well from an inside barrier, no other runner challenged for the lead and rather than restrain the horse he felt it was best to allow the gelding to travel comfortably in a forward position. Trainer P. Bell confirmed these instructions. Stewards noted the explanations of both parties.

Stewards sought an explanation from the L. Cassidy regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of WITHOUTME. L. Cassidy stated that the mare travelled only fairly in the early and middle stages and when asked for an effort, failed to respond to his riding and proved very disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of WITHOUT ME revealed the mare to be slightly lame in the off foreleg. The stable representative for trainer K. Lees was advised that WITHOUT ME would required a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start.

Stewards adjourned an inquiry into B. Pengelly’s riding of BRAEBROOK in the home straight after taking evidence from B. Pengelly and trainer T. Sears.

Race 2: Hannanprint Class 6 Plate – 1200m
1st – I’m ruthless 2nd – Equable 3rd – Fasedhere 4th – Gag Order

The start of this race was delayed when BLACK MORGAN became fractious in the barriers and reared on 2 occasions. BLACK MORGAN was subsequently declared a late scratching at 12.53 pm by order of the stewards on veterinary advice. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on BLACK MORGAN were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 10 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. In the circumstances, stewards took no direct action against BLACK MORGAN, however advised trainer B. Hill that a warning would be placed on the gelding regarding its barrier manners.

MAIN VEIN (G. Colless) was slow to begin.

A short distance after the start, NORTENO (M. Cahill) and I’M RUTHLESS (S. Katsidis) made contact.

I’M RUTHLESS raced wide in the early stages.

NORTENO (M. Cahill) overraced in the early and middle stages.

Approaching the 300m, NORTENO (M. Cahill) shifted out to improve and made contact with TOOTSIE ZYNSKY (D. Browne), which in turn shifted out and bumped RELEASE ME.

EQUABLE (J. Byrne) was held up and unable to obtain clear running until a point approaching the 200m.

THREE LITTLE WORDS (C. Munce) laid in over the concluding stages, resulting in its rider being unable to fully test his mount.

GAG ORDER (M. Speers) and RELEASE ME (J. Holder) raced wide throughout.

B. Pengelly, rider of UNSER, reported that approaching the home turn after placing the gelding under extreme pressure, he became concerned with the horse’s action and therefore did not place it under any undue pressure in the straight. Trainer K. Lees reported that UNSER would now go for a spell and that it was his intention to trial the horse before it returns to racing. A post race veterinary examination of UNSER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards sought an explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance of FUHRNATIC. Jockey J. Bowditch stated that the horse travelled quite comfortably in running however when placed under pressure in the straight, failed to respond to his riding and proved very disappointing. The stable representative for trainer M. Eggleston reported that the horse, in her opinion, may not have recovered fully from its first up performance this campaign as this was the second time it had performed disappointingly since resuming. A post race veterinary examination of FUHRNATIC failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Trainer T. Hall was afforded the opportunity of explaining the seemingly improved performance of I’M RUTHLESS. Mr Hall stated that he was of the opinion that I’M RUTHLESS does not race well at Doomben as his form suggests, and despite its most recent effort, he remained positive about the horse’s chances today.

Race 3: HLB Mann Judd QTIS 600 2yo C&G Plate – 1400m
1st – Bianca Jewel 2nd – Cavaliered 3rd – Devinardi 4th – Big Ken The Celt

CRAIGLEA GEE TEE (K. Wharton) reared as the gates opened and lost ground.

BIG KEN THE CELT (S. Katsidis) and EQUISSENTIAL (P. Wolfgram) jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 1200m, TIT TAT TOOEE (J. Byrne), which was overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of ZAMBONI (B. Stewart), which shifted in.

TIT TAT TOOEE continued to overrace in the early and middle stages of the race.

Leaving the 400m, the tiring TIT TAT TOOEE had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between ALTHENAEUM (L. Cassidy) and BIANCA JEWEL (R. Wiggins).

SKATING ON ICE (J. Stanley) raced 3 deep without cover throughout.

BIG KEN THE CELT and CAVALIERED (S. Scriven) raced wide throughout.

Race 4: bmag Brisbane Town Maiden 2yo & Upwards Plate – 1400m
1st – Milanesa 2nd – Startsmeup 3rd – Belltone 4th – March Miss

Trainer K. Milham was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for MARCH MISS by the prescribed time.

SANGRAAL (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start BELLTONE (B. Pengelly) and BOB’S TITLE (A. Erhart) made contact. BELLTONE then shifted out and bumped the hind quarters of MANIAGO (M. Cahill).

MILANESA (J. Byrne) overraced in the early stages.

Approaching the 1100m, RED GOD (L. Cassidy), which was overracing, improved to the inside of COOL RAPIDS (S. Katsidis) where there was insufficient room and when being steadied shifted out, making contact with FIGASAURUS (J. Bowditch). MILANESA, which was trailing FIGASAURUS, was hampered as a consequence.

MODERN AL (J. Taylor) and BOB’S TITLE (A. Erhart) raced wide throughout.

A post race veterinary examination of MARCH MISS revealed the mare to be lame in the near foreleg.

The stable representative for trainer G. Heinrich was advised that MOVE TO THE GROOVE, which bucked in the early stages and was retired from the event by its rider, would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

Stable representative for trainer P. Messara, Mr B. Wintle, was afforded the opportunity of explaining the seemingly improved performance of MILANESA today. Mr Wintle stated that the filly raced in its customary rearward position in a slowly-run event last start, which was a distinct disadvantage. Mr Wintle added that in contrast the tempo of today’s race suited MILANESA’S racing pattern and also felt that the fact the filly was third up from a spell today was also an advantage leading to an improved performance.

Race 5: MP Limited Class 6 H'cap – 1800m
1st – Firebolt 2nd – Sir Kingsford 3rd – Gaze On 4th – Tarrayoukyan

S. Katsidis reported that FIREBOLT jumped away awkwardly and lost ground, and this compelled him to take up a position further back in the field than he had anticipated.

TURN AND BURN (J. Letherby) was slow to begin.

TURN AND BURN, SIR KINGSFORD (C. Munce) and EDDIE RAPIDO (E. Kehoe) overraced in the early and middle stages.

SIR PRESIDENTE (J. Byrne) raced wide in the early stages and middle stages.

Leaving the 500m, EDDIE REPIDO shifted in, tightening the running of PUCCINI (J. Taylor) and REGAL GAZE (E. Wilkinson).

Near the 400m, FIREBOLT (S. Katsidis) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with MALANDRINA (R. Wiggins).

SIR KINGSFORD (C. Munce) laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

E. Kehoe reported that passing the 900m the saddle on EDDIE RAPIDO shifted forward and as a result she was unable to restrain her mount and was obliged to allow the gelding to improve forward from that point.

REGAL GAZE (E. Wilkinson) raced wide throughout.

Race 6: BRC 1st Anniversary Ascot Quality Listed H'cap – 1200m
1st – Bold Glance 2nd – Joint Chiefs 3rd – Conquering Queen 4th – Daunting Lad

As L. Cassidy was to be overweight, J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of MISS MATARI. L. Cassidy was fined $100.

CONQUERING QUEEN (G. Colless) began awkwardly.

ANOTHER TAKEOVER (J. Bowditch) began awkwardly, losing ground.

Shortly after the start, CHANGING EYES (J. Holder) was tightened for room between JOINT CHIEFS (M. Cahill) and CONQUERING QUEEN, which shifted in.

ANOTHER TAKEOVER (J. Bowditch) overraced in the early stages.

After passing the 800m, PAPRIKA (S. Katsidis) was momentarily crowded for room between CONQUERING QUEEN and TOUR GUIDE (B. Stewart), which shifted in momentarily.

Nearing the 400m, CHANGING EYES had to be steadied from the heels of JOINT CHIEFS (M. Cahill), which shifted out.

J. Holder reported that he had difficult obtaining clear running on CHANGING EYES in the home straight.

TOUR GUIDE and DAUNTING LAD (S. Seamer) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey J. Byrne for the seemingly poor performance of READYOR. J. Byrne stated that the filly enjoyed a nice run in transit, however when placed under pressure in the early stages of the straight, READYOR failed to respond and proved disappointing. Stable representative Mr T. Edmonds advised stewards that the horse’s best form has been on rain affected tracks and that it was the stable’s intention to give the filly a freshen up before its next race start.

Race 7: Commercial Plumbing & Insulation Supplies Queensland Cup – 3200m
1st – Solid Billing 2nd – Dave The Dude 3rd – Mr Mayfair 4th – Prix Du Sang

DAVE THE DUDE (C. Munce) was slow to begin.

CARRY ME BABY (R. Wiggins) and BENAURA GIRL (P. Hammersley) came together and made contact at the start.

Shortly after the start when caught wide, TINSELTOWN (S. Katsidis) commenced to overrace for a short distance when being restrained.

DAVE THE DUDE (C. Munce) raced wide in the early stages.

Near the 1000m, DON VITO (J. Bowditch) improved up to the inside of BENAURA GIRL (P. Hammersley) and had to be steadied.

Stewards sought an explanation from S. Katsidis, rider of TINSELTOWN, regarding the tactics employed on that gelding, which resulted in him settling in a position near the tail of the field. S. Katsidis stated that he was instructed to obtain cover as the gelding has a tendency to overrace when racing without cover. He added that after the start he was caught very wide from his outside barrier and rather than urge TINSELTOWN forward and risk the horse then overracing he elected to take hold and position the gelding towards the rear of the field closer to the fence behind MATTER OF PRIORITY. S. Katsidis further added that during the middle stages he was reluctant to leave his trailing position to move forward as TINSELTOWN was a risk at running out a strong 3200m and explained that the horse was positioned close enough to the leaders rounding the home turn, in his opinion, to be a winning chance. Trainer M. Moroney concurred with S. Katsidis’s comments and added that he was a little disappointed with the horse’s finishing effort.

Stewards sought an explanation from M. Cahill as to the reasons he did not place PRIX DU SANG under pressure during the middle stages in order to take closer order to the leading division when it appeared he was in a position to do so. M. Cahill stated that from leaving the 1400m he was aware that the leading division were opening up a considerable margin over the rest of the field, however he was reluctant to place PRIX DU SANG under more pressure at that point as the horse was travelling kindly and he felt it would be detrimental to the horse’s chances to place it under further pressure at that point. M. Cahill added that he felt he was a winning chance on the home turn, however PRIX DU SANG only finished the race off fairly. Trainer M. Moroney concurred with M. Cahill’s assessment and under the circumstances was satisfied with the performance of PRIX DU SANG.

Race 8: Robert Bax & Associates QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1400m
1st – Listen Son 2nd – Lochiel 3rd – Rokatoko 4th – Tunahog

Leaving the 800m, MAROON BELLS (J. Holder) was momentarily crowded for room between FUNTANTES and ROKATOKO (G. Colless), which shifted out.

Passing the 400m, MAROON BELLS (J. Holder) shifted out to obtain clear running and made contact with FUNTANTES.

ROKATOKO laid in when placed under pressure over the concluding stages.
