Supplementary Report

As M. Wood was to be overweight on GRANZELLA (Race 1), VERRIDON (Race 5) and RAISE UP (Race 8), riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet. Subsequently, M. Wood was fined $500.

Race 1: Hamilton Hotel QTIS 2yo H'cap - 1000m
1st – Mr Favulous 2nd – Midnight Minx 3rd – Danish Whiskey 4th – Daytime Dazzler

Due to transport difficulties, apprentice B. Evans was unable to fulfil his engagement on MR FAVULOUS and was replaced by J. Taylor when no apprentice rider was available.

MIDNIGHT MINX (G. Colless) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with DANISH WHISKEY (J. Byrne).

WONDERFUL YOU (C. Munce) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the off side barrier partition.

DAYTIME DAZZLER (R. Hinricks) was inconvenienced shortly after the start by REGENCY ROYALE (M. Cahill), which shifted in slightly.

DAYTIME DAZZLER raced ungenerously in the middle stages and near the 700m shifted in making contact with the hind quarters of ASPY BAY (B. El-Issa).

After passing the 600m, DANISH WHISKEY commenced to hang out and proved difficult to ride rounding the home turn. Trainer L. Birchley was advised that the filly must compete in an official trial prior to its next race start.

In the early part of the straight, WONDERFUL YOU had difficulty obtaining clear running until approaching the 300m.

Passing the 200m, WONDERFUL YOU was obliged to race in restricted room for a short distance when attempting to take a narrow run between REGENCY ROYALE and DAYTIME DAZZLER.

C. McIver reported that GRANZELLA appeared to lose concentration through the middle stages and it was not until he was able to position it wider on the track in the home straight that the horse raced genuinely and finished the race off well.

A post race veterinary examination of LADY MANCHESTER revealed the filly to be exhibiting an abnormal respiratory noise.

Race 2:Sky Racing Open H'cap – 2200m
1st – Spechenka 2nd – Eureka 3rd – Patmoss 4th - Sermon

Rounding the first turn, MOON CHASER (K. Wharton) shifted in and bumped PATMOSS (J. Taylor). Following this, PATMOSS overraced for some distance.

EUREKA (L. Cassidy) overraced in the early stages.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight, EUREKA was held up and unable to improve.

PATMOSS was held up and unable to obtain clear running in the early part of the straight, and near the 300m, MOON CHASER (K. Wharton) shifted in and brushed WARRINGAH (C. Munce), which was turned in on to PATMOSS. PATMOSS then was obliged to alter course to the inside of BEARTRACKER (B. Stewart) in order to improve.

Jockey C. Munce was asked to explain the performance of WARRINGAH. He explained that the gelding travelled well, however did not respond to his riding upon entering the home straight and, in his view, may be better suited dropping back in class. A post race veterinary examination of WARRINGAH failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 3: Tattersall’s Arcade 1mw H'cap – 1812m
1st – Prussian Secret 2nd – Eastline 3rd – Telestah La Vistah 4th – Sunshine Angel

After being loaded into the barriers, IVY’S LEAGUE became fractious, was removed from the gates, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.

Approaching the 1600m, LA BELLA LUISA (B. Stewart), which was overracing, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ROYAL REIGN (B. El-Issa), which shifted in. At this stage, CROSS TOWN TRAFFIC (P. Hammersley) also raced fiercely and shifted outwards, placing LA BELLA LUISA at a further inconvenience at the heels of ROYAL REIGN.

ROYAL REIGN overraced in the early stages when racing 3 wide and was then allowed to stride forward to assume the lead near the 1000m. B. El-Issa reported that ROYAL REIGN hung in for the major part of the race.

LA BELLA LUISA overraced in the early and middle stages.

E. Wilkinson, rider of SUNSHINE ANGEL, reported that approaching the 300m it was apparent to him that ARGENTEUM (J. Taylor) was attempting to shift outwards towards his mount around the heels of LA BELLA LUISA. He added that he stopped riding momentarily and moved SUNSHINE ANGEL wider on the track as he felt it would be a disadvantage if ARGENTEUM came into contact with his mount and he was to lose momentum at that point of the race.

Trainer L. Davies was questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of PRUSSIAN SECRET today. L. Davies explained that the gelding is not at its best when racing on rain affected tracks, which it has done at its last 2 starts, and today appreciated the firm surface.

Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the performance of IVY’S LEAGUE. L. Cassidy explained that the gelding travelled comfortably until placed under pressure passing the 600m and failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing from that point. L. Cassidy added that, in his view, IVY’S LEAGUE may be best suited when leading in its races. A post race veterinary examination of IVY’S LEAGUE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards inquired into allegations made by apprentice J. Piper that rider B. Stewart made inappropriate comments to her at a point near the 1600m. After taking evidence from the steward in the vicinity and riders, P. Hammersley, rider of CROSS TOWN TRAFFIC, J. Piper, rider of BANN RUBY, and B. Stewart, rider of LA BELLA LUISA, stewards believed there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the matter.

Race 4: Carlton Draught Class 6 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Equable 2nd – Three Swallows 3rd – Cool Edition 4th – Armstrong Jones

Trainer T. Crane advised that COOL EDITION would be ridden further back in the field if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

THREE SWALLOWS (J. Piper) jumped away awkwardly.

J. Piper, rider of THREE SWALLOWS, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1200m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MR NAPPY (L. Cassidy), resulting in MR NAPPY being taken across the rightful running of RATTLE ‘N’ RUN (P. Hammersley), which further resulted in RATTLE ‘N’ RUN having to be restrained to avoid the heels of MR NAPPY, resulting in RATTLE ‘N’ RUN becoming unbalanced. J. Piper was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 10 meetings, to commence at midnight, 4 December and to expire at midnight, 18 December.

Apprentice A. Butler reported that MY LIMIT had a tendency to lay out throughout the event.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce and trainer T. Crane regarding the reason for COOL EDITION not improving into a run that was available after passing the 100m between HEARTSUN (E. Wilkinson) and EQUABLE (G. Colless). Trainer T. Crane explained that it was his specific instruction to C. Munce to attempt to shift to the outside in the home straight as COOL EDITION races best when ridden this way and has in the past resented improving between horses under pressure in the straight.

A post race veterinary examination of MY SWEET COOKIE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer L. Bryant reported that in light of the gelding’s performance, he would review the current racing program of MY SWEET COOKIE.

Race 5: Carlton Mid 1MW Country Cup – 1200m
1st – Outstandlingly 2nd – Craiglea Falcon 3rd – Bazzooka 4th – Perugin Thought

P. Hammersley restrained THE JOKER shortly after the start to obtain a position closer to the running rail.

Approaching the 1000m, UNCONQUERABLE (C. McIver) had to be restrained to avoid the heels of BAZZOOKA (B. Stewart), which shifted in when not fully clear. B. Stewart, rider of BAZZOOKA, was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground. In considering the matter, stewards took into account that BAZZOOKA had a tendency to lay in at this stage of the race.

Leaving the 400m, BEAUTIFUL TIMING (S. Seamer), when attempting to obtain clear running, improved up on to the heels of SEEN IM (J. Taylor) and had to be severely checked. At the same stage, THE JOKER (P. Hammersley) was held up behind the tiring RED FERMENTS (B. Evans) until a point passing the 300m.

Near the 150m, VERRIDON (B. El-Issa) shifted out under pressure, taking BEAUTIFUL TIMING (S. Seamer) out on to FINAL CRUNCH (J. Piper), which became unbalanced and was taken out on to SEEM IM (J. Taylor), which also became unbalanced when bumped. B. El-Issa, rider of VERRIDON, was reprimanded.

RED FERMENTS (B. Evans), SEEN IM (J. Taylor) and FIDAKAAT (J. Holder) raced wide throughout.

Stewards intend to question C. Munce and B. El-Issa regarding the riding of their respective mounts over the concluding stages of the race.

Race 6: Travel Associates F&M Classic Plate – 1200m
1st – Zero Rock 2nd – Phenomenal Lass 3rd – Swiss Rose 4th – Cicarellli

DUAL CHAMBER was declared a late scratching at 3.28 pm when the mare refused to proceed to the barriers. Trainer R. Lipp was advised that DUAL CHAMBER must compete satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next race start.

Prior to correct weight, P. Hammersley, rider of FLORAMOUR, reported to stewards that his barrier gate was slow to open. After viewing the footage of the start, and acting under the provisions of AR134A, stewards were of the view that FLORAMOUR had been denied a fair start and its chances in the race materially prejudiced, and accordingly, FLORAMOUR was declared a non runner. Subsequent to the event, it was ordered that all monies invested on DUAL CHAMBER and FLORAMOUR be refunded, with deductions of 6 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets and 8 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets placed prior the withdrawal of DUAL CHAMBER, and 3 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets and 4 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets placed between the withdrawal of DUAL CHAMBER and FLORAMOUR. Official starting prices were subject to deductions of 3 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 4 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets.

Near the 1000m, IRISH DREAM (J. Bowditch), after being momentarily contacted by PHENOMENAL LASS (M. Cahill), shifted in, tightening the running of FLOWERCHILD (L. Cassidy). FLOWERCHILD then commenced to race ungenerously and a short distance later faltered.

ALADAH (K. Wharton) overraced in the middle stages and near the 600m had to be checked off the heels of PHENOMENAL LASS (M. Cahill).

PHENOMENAL LASS was held up rounding the home turn and again in the early part of the straight until after passing the 300m.

ALADAH (K. Wharton) was held up in the early part of the straight and after passing the 400m was awkwardly placed at the heels of PHENOMENAL LASS and shifted to the inside of that runner to obtain clear running.

CICARELLI (M. Wood) was held up and unable to improve in the early part of the home straight and until near the 300m.

Passing the 200m, PHENOMENAL LASS (M. Cahill) shifted out, resulting in IRISH DREAM having to be steadied to avoid the heels of PHENOMENAL LASS. M. Cahill, rider of PHENOMENAL LASS, was severely reprimanded.

BEYONCE’S STAR (B. Stewart), ACQUIRED (B. El-Issa) and FLY TO WIN (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.

G. Colless was questioned regarding the performance of GAG ORDER. He explained that the mare travelled well and upon straightening accelerated for a short distance, however failed to respond to his riding inside the 300m and proved disappointing.

A post race veterinary examination of GAG ORDER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 7: Tattersal’s Recognition Stakes H'cap – 1600m
1st – Pepperwood 2nd – Listen Son 3rd – Pyramids 4th – Our Lukas

The start was delayed when PYRAMIDS became fractious in the barriers. PYRAMIDS was removed from the barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.

Near the 1000m, HELIDECK (C. Munce) raced up to the outside of LISTEN SON (L. Cassidy), resulting in LISTEN SON commencing to overrace for some distance in the middle stages.

Passing the 350m, PEPPERWOOD (G. Colless) shifted out to improve, taking RIGHTSON (B. Stewart) out on to HELIDECK, which was momentarily inconvenienced when it was weakening.

Stewards sought an explanation from trainer L. Birchley in respect of the improved performance of PEPPERWOOD today. L. Birchley stated that the horse had been gelded prior to embarking on this preparation and, in his opinion, this resulted in the horse reaching race fitness earlier than it has in past preparations. He added that PEPPERWOOD was better suited by the pattern of today’s race where there was no pace in the early part of the race.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey and trainer B Baldwin regarding the disappointing performance of RIGHTSON. B. Stewart stated that whilst he was instructed to lead if possible, he felt that the speed in the early stages was too strong and decided to position the horse just behind the leaders. B. Stewart added that RIGHTSON had been able to lead unchallenged at its most recent starts and this was in stark contrast to the way today’s race was run. Trainer B. Baldwin stated that the horse was getting up in the weights and was of the opinion that the horse races best when leading or when positioned to the outside of other runners. B. Baldwin added that RIGHTSON had been in training for a significant period of time and may be feeling the effects of a long preparation.

M. Cahill, rider of the 3rd placegetter, PYRAMIDS, was fined $200 for returning to scale overweight.

Race 8: Hardy Brothers Jewellers QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1200m
1st – Audacious Spirit 2nd – Benny’s Buttons 3rd – Excellantes 4th – Rapid Leica Dane

PEGUNNY CAT (J. Taylor) and GENTLE GIANT (E. Wilkinson) were tightened for room at the start between JOPA (J. Bowditch) and RAPID LEICA DANE (J. Byrne), which shifted out.

BENNY’S BUTTONS (G. Colless) and EXCELLANATES (B. Stewart) made contact on jumping away.

RAISE UP (C. McIver) jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 1000m, PEGUNNY CAT (J. Taylor) shifted in, taking JOPA (J. Bowditch) in on to RAPID LEICA DANE, which had to be steadied when taken across the heels of BENNY’S BUTTON’S (G. Colless).

PEGUNNY CAT raced ungenerously at the heels of RAISE UP during the middle stages.

RAISE UP and PEGUNNY CAT raced wide throughout.

J. Byrne, rider RAPID LEICA DANE, was reprimanded for failing to weigh in on 4th placegetter, RAPID LEICA DANE.

A post race veterinary examination of JOPA revealed the presence of blood in one nostril only. Trainer J. Pritchard was advised that the gelding must gallop 1000 metres before a steward prior to its next race start.
