Race 1: Mimiki Foundation 1mw - 1000m
1st – Leapfrog 2nd – Perugin Thought 3rd – Hull City 4th - Snorkel
SNORKEL (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with PERUGIN THOUGHT (M. Hellyer).
REIZARB (E. Wilkinson) jumped outwards at the start and made contact with LEAPFROG (L. Rolls) and became unbalanced and shifted in, tightening the running of SNORKEL (J. Taylor).
Near the 800m, CARDIO (M. Radecker) raced ungenerously and got its head up and hung out.
Approaching the 600m, PERUGIN THOUGHT had to be momentarily steadied from the heels of CHASTE (C. Munce), which shifted in when not quite clear.
MOONAN KATHLEEN (S. Galloway) raced wide throughout and was taken wider on the track rounding the home turn when REIZARB (E. Wilkinson), which was racing to its inside, was taken out by PERUGIN THOUGHT, which had a tendency to hang out.
MARTIKA (S. Seamer) race wide without cover throughout.
A post race veterinary examination of MOONAN KATHLEEN failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
L. Rolls, rider of the winner, LEAPFROG, was fined $200 for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post.
Race 2: Lyndhurst Stud QTIS 2yo C&G H'cap - 1000m
1st – Noisy Ocean 2nd – Biggles 3rd – Red Royal 4th - Tehuti
ALLBARTHESHOUTING (A. Taylor) was slow to begin.
IMA REAL DUDE (M. Radecker) blundered on jumping away.
FLYING INDY (J. Holder) and ZIP THE LIP (M. Hellyer) bumped at the start.
Near the 600m, TRUE BLITZ (W. D’avila) was reluctant to hold its position when racing to the inside of ZIP THE LIP and shifted in, making contact with the running rail and lost ground. ALLBARTHESHOUTING (A. Taylor), which was following, had to be checked off the heels of TRUE BLITZ when that horse lost ground.
Passing the 500m, TRUE BLITZ again shifted in, making contact with the running rail of its own accord.
SPINHRO had a tendency to lay in under pressure inside the final 200m, and over the concluding stages shifted its ground inwards, placing its rider, J. Taylor, at a disadvantage.
SPINHRO (J. Taylor) raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
L. Cassidy, rider of NOISY OCEAN, dropped his whip near the 200m.
D. Missen, rider of DENWOOD, was cautioned for using his whip in an excessive manner.
A post race veterinary examination of MOTEL ON MARS revealed the gelding to have a slower than average post-race recovery and had sustained a laceration to the off-hind coronet.
Race 3: Flood Fundraiser Appeal – 27 Jan QTIS 3yo Fillies H'cap - 1200m
1st – Skating On Ice 2nd – Mossriver 3rd – Lady Montel 4th -Catashee
ANGEL FROM ABOVE was declared a late scratching at 9.31 am due to flood related transport difficulties.
An inquiry has been adjourned into K. Forrester’s failure to fulfil his riding engagement on MIST IN THE MORN. M. Radecker was substituted as the rider of that filly.
CATASHEE (S. Galloway) jumped away awkwardly and shortly after was tightened for room between MATILDA’S DANCE (C. Munce) and FANCIFUL (R. Wiggins), which shifted out.
LADY MONTEL (J. Taylor) jumped outwards at the start, taking SKY EFFORT (G. Colless) out on to SKATING ON ICE (J. Bowditch).
G. Colless, rider of SKY EFFORT, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in near the 1100m and tighten the running of PARIS BLU (E. Wilkinson). SKY EFFORT then laid in and away from SKATING ON ICE (J. Bowditch), resulting in further tightening to PARIS BLU, which had to be checked as a consequence. Subsequent to this incident, PARIS BLU raced ungenerously and near the 500m shifted out and away from CATASHEE, making heavy contact with QUEEN OF HAPPINESS (A. Spinks) and becoming unbalanced.
Leaving the 400m, SECRET PLEASURE (C. McIver) laid in and had to be eased from the heels of LADY MONTEL.
Apprentice M. Wood, rider of MOSS RIVER, reported that he was held up in the early stages of the straight between LADY MONTEL and MIST IN THE MORN (M. Radecker) and as a result lost momentum. M. Wood added that he was able to secure clear running passing the 300m and MOSS RIVER finished the race off well.
SECRET PLEASURE raced 3 deep without cover throughout.
QUEEN OF HAPPINESS (A. Spinks) and FANCIFUL raced wide throughout.
C. Munce, rider of MATILDA’S DANCE, reported that from the wide barrier he was obliged to restrain the filly to a rearward position in order to gain a position closer to the rail in the early stages. He added that the tempo of the race was only fair and as a result the field bunched up and he was unable to improve his position through the middle stages and therefore was forced to search for runs towards the inside in the home straight.
S. Galloway, rider of CATASHEE, was fined $200 for returning to scale overweight.
A post race veterinary examination of SKY EFFORT revealed the filly had been galloped on on the off hind leg.
A post race veterinary examination of PARIS BLU failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 4: www.brc.com.au Open H'cap - 1600m
1st – Rightson 2nd – Shooting Spree 3rd – Rockdale 4th – Jazz Heart
On return to scale, C. Munce reported that JAZZ HEART raced flat and failed to respond to his riding from the 600m. Trainer B. Guy agreed with C. Munce’s comments and added that, in his opinion, JAZZ HEART had raced flat since its second placing in the Bernborough Handicap on a heavy track. Mr Guy further stated that JAZZ HEART would now be sent for an immediate spell.
SERMON (C. McIver) and TUSCANY VIEW (J. Taylor) were slow to begin.
HUMMA (J. Holder) raced wide throughout.
When asked to explain the improved performance of RIGHTSON, trainer B. Baldwin stated that at its most recent start the gelding was forced to race wide in the early stages and advised stewards that the gelding had failed on 3 occasions whilst under his training on heavy tracks.
Race 5: Stanton Mienert Class 6 Plate – 1805m
1st – Lake George 2nd – Fantastic Flue 3rd – Racing Heart 4th – Attallus
Trainer L. Gough was fined $200 for failing to declare a rider for MACEDON by the prescribed time.
As R. Wiggins was to be overweight, S. Seamer was substituted as the rider of ATTALLUS. R. Wiggins was fined the sum of $200.
Connections advised that from an inside barrier draw, they intended to ride FANTASTIC BLUE in a more forward position today. The gelding raced accordingly.
The start of this race was delayed for a short time due to the bridle on TOPPING having to be refitted behind the barriers.
EDDIE RAPIDO (S. Scriven) and THE CLANDY MAN CAN (L. Cassidy) were slow to begin.
ATTALLUS (S. Seamer) raced wide in the early and middle stages.
EDDIE RAPIDO overraced during the middle stages at the heels of HOOKER ROAD (M. Hellyer) and was restrained.
RACING HEART (B. Stewart) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the tactics he employed on THE CLANDY MAN CAN, in particular the reasons he improved forward from the 800m. L. Cassidy stated that the gelding usually races up on the pace, however today THE CLANDY MAN CAN was fractious in the barriers and missed the start, which resulted in him settling further back in the field than he would have liked. He further stated that the pace slowed considerably in the middle stages and to give his mount a competitive chance in the race he felt it necessary to improve forward from the 800m. L. Cassidy added that his chances were diminished when RACING HEART improved forward with him to his inside leaving the 700m and he again was forced wider as LAKE GEORGE improved forward to his inside passing the 600m. The explanation was noted.
N. Yamada, rider of TOPPING, reported that from his wide barrier he was forced to restrain his mount to a rearward position in the early stages. He added he was disadvantaged in fully testing his mount in the straight as it had a tendency to lay in under pressure.
Following this race the track rating was upgraded to Dead 4.
Race 6: Sky Racing NMW H'cap – 1400m
1st – Symposium 2nd – Mystical Grey 3rd – Newsnight 4th - Bootooloo
A short delay was caused to the start of this race when OMBREE required farrier attention.
OMBRE (R. Wiggins) and BUTTIDO (A. Butler) were slow to begin.
BOOTOOLOO (E. Wilkinson) jumped inwards at the start, taking UNCONQUERABLE (B. Stewart) in on to JERRYLEE (S. Scriven), which was slow to begin.
Near the 1100m, TOPTWO (K. Wharton) commenced to overrace and had to be steadied from the heels of MR BOOGIEWOOGIE (S. Seamer).
When the pace slowed rounding the first turn, UNCONQUERABLE (B. Stewart) improved up on to the heels of MACHINATION (M. Wood) and shifted out, taking TOPTWO (K. Wharton) and BUTTIDO wider on the track.
MYSTICAL GREY (D. Browne) was held up in the early stages of the straight to the inside of the heels of SIDE TO SIDE (C. Munce) before securing clear running passing the 300m.
BUTTIDO raced wide throughout.
CHASTELAIN (J. Holder) raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
OMBRE bled during the event. As this was the second occasion on which the horse has bled, trainer S. O’Dea was advised that OMBRE would now incur a lifetime bar from racing.
Race 7: Ambassador Travel Open H'cap - 1200m
1st – The Jackal 2nd – Red Sphere 3rd – Dual Chamber 4th – Tisani Boy
LYNCEAN ACADEMY (R. Wiggins) and GO CART (A. Butler) were slow to begin.
BURDEKIN BLUES (S. Scriven) jumped outwards at the start, hampering MR HORNBLOWER (A. Spinks).
DUAL CHAMBER (K. Yoshida) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with CORNWALL PARK (S. Galloway).
K. Wharton, rider of HEART OF THE CITI, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of ZAHAS PRIDE (M. Hellyer), resulting in that horse being carried in on to THE SIXTIES (M. Wood), which resulted in M. Hellyer, rider of ZAHAS PRIDE, and M. Wood, rider of THE SIXTIES, having to take hold and check their mounts. K. Wharton was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commenced at midnight 25 January and to expire at the expiration of the Ipswich Turf Club day meeting on 4 February.
THE JACKAL (G. Colless) overraced for a short distance approaching the first turn.
TOUR GUIDE (C. McIver) raced wide throughout.
Race 8: Mittys Class 6 H'cap – 1200m
1st – Gundy Son 2nd – Handsupfordetroit 3rd – Academy Magic 4th – Inanna
WELCOME SITE was declared a late scratching at 9.06 am on veterinary advice.
Trainer B. Baker was fined $200 for failing to declare a rider for ACADEMY MAGIC.
LEFT STANDING (J. Bowditch) jumped outwards at the start and bumped GOLDCAT (C. Munce), which in turn shifted out, making contact with INANNA (E. Wilkinson).
HOROSCOPES (L. Cassidy) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with GUNDY SON (D. Browne). Subsequently, GUNDY SON and HOROSCOPES made contact on several occasions in the early stages.
Near the 1000m, GAG ORDER (C. McIver) raced in restricted room for a short distance to the inside of FLEET ‘N’ FAST (R. Hinricks), which shifted in slightly.
ACADEMY MAGIC (J. Taylor) laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
M. Speers, rider of GOD’S HAND, reported that approaching the 300m he was disappointed for a run to the outside of PRIDE OF POWER when GUNDY SON improved to his outside. He added that he again was disappointed for a run near the 200m between LEFT STANDING and PRIDE OF POWER (M. Hellyer).
PRIDE OF POWER, GOLDCAT (C. Munce) and HOROSCOPES (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation for the disappointing performance of HOROSCOPES. L. Cassidy stated that the horse had a tendency to lay out throughout the race and in the home straight blundered on several occasions for no apparent reason and proved very disappointing. Trainer’s representative Mr S. Morrisey was unable to offer an explanation other than to suggest that HOROSCOPES may have resented bumping with GUNDY SON on several occasions in the early stages. Stewards intend to question trainer J. Morrisey in the day subsequent to this race regarding the gelding’s performance.
Stewards asked S. Galloway to explain the tactics he adopted on FRIDAY NIGHTS, which raced in a rearward position today, which is in contrast to its established racing pattern. S. Galloway stated that the horse was coming back in distance today and that the gelding did not possess the necessary early speed to take up a forward position. He added that he was trapped wide making the first turn and his only option was to restrain the horse to a rearward position on the fence passing the 800m. Trainer T. Gayler concurred with the comments of S. Galloway and expressed his disappointment at the overall performance of FIRDAY NIGHTS.
