Race 1: THE FOX HOTEL QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1300m
1st – Kahui 2nd – Miss Leibert 3rd – True Blitz 4th – Avgas

Trainer R. Heathcote advised that his intentions are to race BEVICO GIRL (B. El-Issa) in a forward position if possible. The filly settled in a trailing position behind the leading division.

TAX EVADER (N. Yamada), which became fractious in the barrier stalls prior to the start, was declared a late scratching at 12.10 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. TRUE BLITZ (D. Browne), which was drawn in the adjoining stall, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to race. Trainer M. Nolan indicated that the colt would be spelled and gelded during that spell and was subsequently advised that TAX EVADER must trial to the satisfaction of stewards’ prior to returning to racing.

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, K. Wharton, rider of CRAIGLEA ROMEO, made application to stewards to have the gelding declared a non-runner on the basis that he had been denied a fair start. K. Wharton’s grounds for the application related to the nearside barrier gate springing back after the start was effected, making heavy contact with his horse’s head area. After taking evidence from the starter Mr W. Shuck, who indicated that the adjoining barrier stall in which TAX EVADER was drawn was closed after it was damaged and after viewing the film and confirming K. Wharton’s version, stewards, acting under the powers of AR. 134A, declared CRAIGLEA ROMEO a non-runner as it had been denied a fair start.

On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on TAX EVADER and CRAIGLEA ROMEO be refunded, with deductions of 20 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and place tickets on bets placed prior to 12.01 p.m. to apply, and deductions of 6 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 7 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply to bets placed after 12.01 p.m.

The offside barrier gate of TRUE BLITZ sprung back marginally as the start was effected.

BLACK BANNER (J. Holder) was slow to begin.

BLACK BANNER raced wide throughout.

Near the 1100m CRAIGLEA ROMEO (K. Wharton) shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail. CRAIGLEA ROMEO then became unbalanced and shifted out and bumped TRUE BLITZ.

Race 2: PORTERS PLAINLANDS HOTEL OPEN H’CAP - 2115m
1st – Royal Reign 2nd – Rockdale 3rd – Sermon 4th - Humma

Trainer R. Heathcote advised that his intentions are to race HUMMA (L. Cassidy) in a forward position if possible. HUMMA settled in a mid-field position.

ROCKDALE (L. Rolls) began awkwardly and shifted in tightening the running of TUSCANY VIEW (B. El-Issa) and HUMMA (L. Cassidy).

A short distance after the start BELL ACADEMY (M. Speers) commenced to buck and continued to do so until the 1700m and took no competitive part in the race. When BELL ACADEMY commenced to buck, HUMMA, which was trailing that horse, had to be checked when it lost ground and was taken wider on the track. ATTALLUS (J. Taylor), which was also trailing, had to be checked from the heels of BELL ACADEMY near the 1800m. Trainer B. Herne was advised that BELL ACADEMY must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next start.

Near the 1000m ATTALLUS improved up on to the heels of ROYAL REIGN (M. Wood) and had to be steadied.

A post-race veterinary examination of TUSCANY VIEW revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore fetlock.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of DRUMSHANBO. C. Munce stated that the pace in the race suited his mount, until near the 700m when it slackened and for this reason he decided to improve from that point forward. Jockey Munce added that when he asked DRUMSHANBO for an effort approaching the home turn the gelding was immediately under pressure and failed to finish the race off as expected. He further added that the horse may be feeling the effects of its recent campaign. Trainer M. Nolan advised that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.

Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to GOOD 3 retrospective to Race 2.

Race 3: ROYAL MAIL HOTEL CLASS 6 PLATE - 1600m
1st – Al Mazaya 2nd – Koranovsky 3rd – Trauma 4th - Yummy

As no other rider was available, stewards permitted apprentice M. Wood to ride TUPPATONIC 1kg overweight. After pleading guilty to a charge under AR. 120(b) of accepting a ride for which he was overweight, apprentice M. Wood was advised by stewards that, because of his poor record in relation to being overweight, his licence to ride in races was being suspended for a period of one week, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 5 March, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 12 March 2011.

MISS REED (L. Rolls) jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

TUPPATONIC (M. Wood) jumped out at the start taking HAZELDON (L. Cassidy) out on to TRAUMA (T. Bell) which had been a little slow to begin. TRAUMA then had to be steadied from the heels of YUMMY (M. Hellyer).

MISS REED raced fiercely at the heels of GOLD RATING (J. Wood) in the early stages.

OTTO'S DELIGHT (B. El-Issa) raced ungenerously at the heels of LONARO (N. Yamada) in the middle stages.

FIORI (S. Seamer) overraced in the middle stages.

Rounding the home turn AL MAZAYA (D. Browne) shifted out off the fence, taking KORANOVSKY (S. Bogenhuber) wider. KORANOVSKY then commenced to lay out and then took LONARO out on to OTTO'S DELIGHT.

Apprentice T. Bell, the rider of TRAUMA, reported that his saddle shifted back rounding the home turn.

Approaching the 200m GOLD RATING improved up on to the heels of FIORI and was obliged to alter course to secure clear running.

Over the concluding stages GOLD RATING was unable to improve its position when placed awkwardly at the heels of SINFUL WARRIOR (B. Stewart).

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice T. Bell and trainer’s representative Mr E. Petrie as to the reasons for TRAUMA settling in a rearward position, which is in contrast to is normal racing pattern. Apprentice T. Bell stated that TRAUMA began only fairly and suffered interference at the start when HAZELDON (L. Cassidy) shifted out and bumped TRAUMA. Apprentice Bell added that whilst he then had to steady from the heels of YUMMY, TRAUMA did not muster speed as expected and felt this may have been due to the horse coming back in distance. Mr Petrie advised that he had instructed apprentice Bell to position the horse close to the lead, however accepted apprentice Bell’s explanation for the gelding settling back in the field after viewing the stewards’ patrol footage.

Race 4: WEEROONA HOTEL QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1500m
1st – Wabeel 2nd – Angel From Above 3rd – Narcelo 4th – Mossriver

Trainer M. Goodwin was fined $200 under LR. 67 for failing to declare apprentice L. Rolls as the rider of ANGEL FROM ABOVE by the prescribed time.

MINGTON (R. Wiggins) jumped out at the start and made contact with CATASHEE (T. Bell), which in turn shifted out and bumped RHAPSODIC (M. Hughes).

Approaching the 1300m CRAIGLEA TINA (K. Wharton) was taken in and had to be momentarily steadied from the heels of SIMMERING (B. El-Issa), which shifted in when not quite clear. B. El-Issa was admonished and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Near the 1300m SHEER ECHELON (E. Wilkinson) had to be steadied when tightened for room by NARCELO (B. Stewart), which shifted in after receiving contact from FRACTIONS (J. Taylor), which was hanging in at that point of the race.

CRAIGLEA TINA raced wide in the early stages.

Near the 1000m SHEER ECHELON had to be checked when tightened for room between AL FAHER (P. Hammersley) and NARCELO, which after being bumped by FRACTIONS (J. Taylor) became unbalanced and shifted in.

When B. El-Issa (SIMMERING) steadied his mount after passing the 1000m, NARCELO, which was following, had to be restrained to avoid that horse’s heels. SHEER ECHELON, which was following, also had to be steadied.

EXTREME MOVER (C. Munce), FRACTIONS, MOSSRIVER (L. Cassidy) and IGLES STAR (J. Bowditch) raced wide throughout.

Leaving the 900m IGLES STAR had to be steadied from the heels of MOSSRIVER which shifted in when not quite clear.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight HIDDEN TREASURE (S. Seamer) was held up and unable to improve.

CATASHEE was held up in the home straight and approaching the 200m was disappointed for a run between FRACTIONS and EXTREME MOVER and had to be checked off the heels of EXTREME MOVER.

For some distance approaching and passing the 300m AL FAHER was held up for clear running.

Following the race trainer R. Heathcote reported that SIMMERING had cast its off hind plate during the race and had a minor laceration to the near hind leg.

CRAIGLEA TINA lost its off hind plate in running.

MINGTON lost its off fore plate in running.

Race 5: PLOUGH INN F&M CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Hull City 2nd – Norocos 3rd – Zippy Lou 4th – Lady Selene

As M. Radecker failed to arrive on course, S. Seamer was substituted as the rider of SPANISH FLING. M. Radecker will be interviewed at the Toowoomba meeting.

As apprentice T. Bell was stood down by the Club’s doctor, apprentice Michael Palmer was substituted as the rider of BELLETRIST.

FIZZY (B. El-Issa) and WELCOME SITE (M. Hellyer) were slow to begin.

After travelling a short distance POINTE DANCER (R. Wiggins) was tightened for room between SPANISH FLING (S. Seamer) and ZIPPY LOU (L. Rolls), which shifted in and away from INANNA (L. Cassidy). A short distance later ZIPPY LOU had to be steadied momentarily from the heels of INANNA, which shifted in when not sufficiently clear.

S. Galloway, the rider of LADY SELENE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of BELLETRIST (Michael Palmer) resulting in that horse being taken in on to MISSY WINDY WEEPU (J. Taylor), which had to be checked when tightened for room to the inside of BELLETRIST. S. Galloway’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 5 March, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 16 March 2011.

Apprentice S. Bogenhuber, the rider of HULL CITY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1100m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MISSY WINDY WEEPU, resulting in that horse having to be checked to avoid the heels of HULL CITY. Apprentice Bogenhuber’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 5 March, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 17 March 2011.

ZIPPY LOU raced wide in the early stages.

LADY LEO (J. Wood), SPANISH FLING and BELLETRIST (Michael Palmer) raced wide throughout.

ZIPPY LOU shifted its ground appreciably outwards under pressure in the straight.

Apprentice S. Bogenhuber, the rider of HULL CITY, pleaded guilty to a further charge of careless riding in that near the 200m she permitted her mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of CHASTE (M. Wood), resulting in its rider having to take evasive action to avoid the heels of HULL CITY. Apprentice Bogenhuber’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 5 March, and expire at midnight on Friday, 18 March 2011, to be served concurrently with the previous term of suspension imposed.

INANNA bled for the first time during the race. Trainer L. Richardson was advised that the mare would now incur the mandatory three month ban from racing under AR. 53A.

Race 6: HOGS BREATH CAFÉ IPSWICH C,G&E - 1200m
1st – Cat Eyes 2nd – I’m Ruthless 3rd – Silent Movie 4th – Brigadoon Jack

As apprentice J. Wood was stood down by the Club’s doctor, J. Bowditch was substituted as the rider of OUR SCOOBY DOO when no other apprentice was available.

DANEOMITE (L. Rolls) jumped away awkwardly and contacted SILENT MOVIE (S. Seamer).

I’M RUTHLESS (E. Wilkinson) also jumped a little awkwardly, shifted out and brushed OUR SCOOBY DOO (J. Bowditch), which was taken out on to BANN RUBY (Michael Palmer).

Passing the 1000m EASY ROCKER (S. Bogenhuber) was tightened for room to the inside of SILENT MOVIE, which was inclined to lay in after being cramped for room by I’M RUTHLESS, which was also racing in restricted room to the inside of JOINT CHIEFS (M. Wood). Stewards were of the view that the racing manners of SILENT MOVIE contributed to this incident, however advised apprentice M. Wood to afford fellow riders sufficient racing room to his inside in future.

BANN RUBY raced wide throughout.

SILENT MOVIE was again tightened for room approaching the 800m by I’M RUTHLESS which again was racing tight to the inside of JOINT CHIEFS.

Approaching the 300m EASY ROCKER was hampered by I’M RUTHLESS, which shifted out under pressure.

CAT EYES (M. Hellyer) shifted out under pressure over the final 200m.

DRUM RUN (B. El-Issa), which raced in a position outside the leader, compounded over the final 200m and when tiring laid in.

OUR SCOOBY DOO lost its off fore plate in running.

Race 7: MCGUIRES HOTELS FALVELON LISTED H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Essington 2nd – Bold Glance 3rd – The Jackal 4th – Tierqualo

Correct weight was delayed to allow apprentice M. Wood to view the stewards’ footage as he had concerns that CASHOLET may not have been afforded a fair start. After viewing this footage in the presence of trainer B. Guy, apprentice Wood did not wish to proceed with an application.

FIDAKAT (N. Tomizawa) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out hampering THE JACKAL (D. Browne)

CASHOLET (M. Wood) jumped away awkwardly.

Stewards have opened an inquiry into the running and handling of BOLD GLANCE. After taking evidence from the trainer of the horse, N. Hilton, and rider B. El-Issa, the inquiry has been adjourned to a time and date to be fixed.

Race 8: FRIDAYS 0MW H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Newsnight 2nd – Golden Cash 3rd – Miss Cutie 4th – Tristabrave

GOLDEN CASH (R. Wiggins), MISS CUTIE (M. Hellyer), MACHINATION (M. Wood), THE CLANDY MAN CAN (S. Bogenhuber) and TAFEER (B. El-Issa) were all tightened for room at the start between NOTHIN' LEICA DAME (W. Wheatley) and RELEASED (S. Seamer). In this incident TAFEER made heavy contact with the hind quarters of RELEASED and became very unbalanced.

After passing the 1000m RELEASED had to be steadied when tightened for room by AQUA CALDA (C. Munce).

NOTHIN' LEICA DAME raced ungenerously in the early stages.

NOTHIN' LEICA DAME, AQUA CALDA, RELEASED, THE CLANDY MAN CAN and OLD MATES ACT (Michael Palmer) raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 400m NEWSNIGHT (L. Cassidy) attempted a run between JOYEUX JOY (D. Green) and TRISTABRAVE (S. Galloway) where there was doubtful room. As a result NEWSNIGHT became awkward at the heels of TRISTRBRAVE for a short distance.

Approaching the 300m NEWSNIGHT shifted out and bumped TRISTABRAVE.

Stewards sought an explanation from B. El-Issa regarding his tactics on TAFEER in the middle stages where the horse led by a considerable distance and set a fast tempo. B. El-Issa explained that after being hampered shortly after the start he rode the mare forward and after obtaining the lead near the 1100m he was unable to restrain TAFEER when the mare overraced. B. El-Issa added that after attempting to restrain TAFEER for some distance in the middle stages he allowed the mare to stride as he felt his efforts to restrain TAFEER would be detrimental to the horse’s capacity to finish the race off. Trainer K. Schweida explained that TAFEER in its most recent starts has had a tendency to overrace and resent being restrained in its races. Mr Schweida advised stewards that he will now remove the blinkers and step the horse back in distance.A post-race veterinary examination of TAFEER revealed the mare had a laceration inside the offside stifle. Mr Schweida was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for TAFEER prior to its next start.

D. Green, the rider of JOYEUX JOY, was issued with reprimands for raising his whip arm above shoulder height (AR. 137A(4)(b)) and for using the whip in a forehand manner in consecutive strides (AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii)).
