Race 1: HAMILTON HOTEL 2MW H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Mystical Grey 2nd – Work The Room 3rd – Tycoon’s Pride 4th – Tightrope
SOPHIE'S SPIRIT (J. Holder) jumped away awkwardly.
JOYEUX JOY (J. Taylor) was obliged to race three wide in the early stages and the rider therefore elected to push forward to a position outside the leader near the 1000m.
Rider J. Taylor reported that JOYEUX JOY hung in when placed under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of JOYEUX JOY revealed the mare to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer M. Thexton was advised that she must produce a veterinary clearance for JOYEUX JOY prior to its next start.
TIGHTROPE bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer J. Fitzgerald was advised that under the provisions of AR. 53A(4) TIGHTROPE would be ineligible to race for a period of three months and must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward prior to resuming racing.
Race 2: CARLTON MID CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Irish Dream 2nd – Lifebuoy 3rd – I’m Ruthless 4th – Inventory
Trainer D. Forster advised that TOPKAPI PALACE would be ridden in a rearward position from its wide barrier if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
Trainer T. Hall was reprimanded under AR. 140A for presenting I’M RUTHLESS to race in incorrect gear.
Shortly after the start I’M RUTHLESS (E. Wilkinson) shifted out and bumped WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY (L. Cassidy), which was taken out on to SHAZOOM (D. Hayse)
Approaching the 300m GOOD MEDICINE (C. Brown) was tightened for room between WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY, which was taken out slightly by IRISH DREAM (L. Nolen), and SHAZOOM, which shifted in under pressure. SHAZOOM then a short distance later shifted out under pressure and bumped RATTLE 'N' RUN (Michael Palmer).
Over the concluding stages WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY and GOOD MEDICINE had to be steadied when tightened for room between SCHIPPER (S. Galloway), which shifted out around the heels of INVENTORY (C. Munce) to improve, and SWEEPSTAKING (D. Dunn), which after initially being taken in by I’M RUTHLESS, shifted in and away from that runner. Both S. Galloway and E. Wilkinson (I’M RUTHLESS) were issued with reprimands and advised to make greater effort to keep their mounts on a straight course in future.
SHAZOOM, I'M RUTHLESS and TOPKAPI PALACE all raced wide throughout.
Race 3: HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLERS QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Excellantes 2nd – Spirit Of Boom 3rd – Pyrography 4th – Upsala
As B. Stewart was ill, S. Galloway was substituted as the rider of RODRIGEUZ and B. Avdulla was substituted as the rider of CARRY THE CLUBS (Race 6).
STARSTREAMED (Michael Palmer) stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer T. Webb was advised that a warning would be placed on STARSTREAMED.
G’DAY OLD MATE (M. Hellyer) raced ungenerously in the early stages.
C. Munce, the rider of UPSALA, restrained his mount in the early stages to the rear of the field to obtain a position closer to the fence.
READY STEADY VETTI (C. Brown) and ANNETTE'S PUMPKIN (L. Cassidy) raced three wide throughout.
Near the 700m G’DAY OLD MATE was tightened for room by RIVER LAD (E. Wilkinson), which was taken in by READY STEADY VETTI (C. Brown). As a result of G’DAY OLD MATE being tightened, it made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced.
Near the 300m ANNETTE'S PUMPKIN, when weakening, was inclined to lay in and had to be restrained from the heels of GOLESTAN (A. Spinks), which also shifted out slightly.
SPIRIT OF BOOM (T. Bell) shifted in under pressure over the final 250m.
Near the 100m THE BARRACKS (J. Taylor) had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between G’DAY OLD MATE and UPSALA which shifted in and away from RIVER LAD.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice T. Bell regarding the riding tactics he employed on SPIRIT OF BOOM in the early stages of the race, particularly his lack of urgency to take up a midfield position as instructed and the reason why he did not attempt to maintain a trailing position behind GOLESTAN approaching the 800m. Apprentice Bell explained that he was instructed to settle the horse in a midfield position if possible but due to the fast early speed, he settled further back than anticipated and he was reluctant to ride the horse with vigour as SPIRIT OF BOOM has had a history of overracing and proving difficult to ride if ridden in this fashion. He added that he was again reluctant to apply pressure on SPIRIT OF BOOM near the 800m to maintain a trailing position on the back of GOLESTAN and as a result this allowed RODRIGEUZ (S. Galloway) to cross his mount and obtain that position. Trainer T. Gollan confirmed that he had instructed apprentice Bell to settle in a midfield position with cover if possible and agreed that SPIRIT OF BOOM is a difficult horse to ride if ridden aggressively in amongst horses in the early stages of the race. Stewards advised T. Bell that his ride in the early stages did lack initiative and furthermore that he should have attempted to trail GOLESTAN near the 800m. However, stewards were of the opinion that his riding did not fall below the standard to be culpable under the rules.
Race 4: CENTENARY CLASSIC MERCEDES-BENZ STAKES - 1400m
1st – Mahisara 2nd – Noisy Ocean 3rd – Abstract 4th – Jet Star Girl
Stewards considered an objection lodged by A. Spinks, the rider of 5th placegetter BLACK JAG, against 3rd placegetter ABSTRACT (C. Brown), alleging interference over the final 50m. After taking evidence from both riders and Mr P. Hulbert, the trainer of BLACK JAG, stewards were of the opinion that ABSTRACT did shift out near the 50m resulting in BLACK JAG being taken out over the heels of NOISY OCEAN, which did shift in slightly. Bearing in mind the proximity to the finish line that this interference occurred, stewards could not be satisfied that the interference sustained to BLACK JAG warranted an alteration to the placings and dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry C. Brown was issued with a reprimand for failing to stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion.
NOISY OCEAN (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
OUTBACK GRANDE (K. Yoshida) and NOISY OCEAN raced wide throughout.
Passing the 1200m EMPLUS (J. McDonald) shifted in and bumped STRIKE THE STARS (J. Byrne), and again near the 1000m EMPLUS was inclined to shift in away from ABSTRACT and inconvenienced STRIKE THE STARS.
Passing the 800m WAR CHARM (B. Avdulla) commenced to overrace and had to be steadied from the heels of EMPLUS.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight until approaching the 300m WAR CHARM was held up when unable to obtain clear running.
C. Brown, the rider of ABSTRACT, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the winning post he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of STRIKE THE STARS (J. Byrne), resulting in that runner having to be restrained away from the heels of ABSTRACT. C. Brown’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Monday, 4 July, and expire at midnight on Friday, 15 July 2011.
Race 5: CARLTON DRAUGHT TATTERSALL’S CUP - 2200m
1st – Ironstein 2nd – Shuffle The Cash 3rd – Little Stranger 4th – Viking Hero
C. Ormsby, the rider of VIKING HERO, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 118A of changing his riding gear after weighing out and was fined $400.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, C. Ormsby, the rider of 4th placegetter VIKING HERO, exercised his right to view the stewards’ patrol film to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge a protest against 3rd placegetter LITTLE STRANGER. After viewing the film jockey Ormsby declined to protest.
L. Nolen, the rider of 2nd placegetter SHUFFLE THE CASH, lodged an objection against IRONSTEIN (B. Avdulla) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 200m. After taking evidence from all relevant parties and viewing the stewards’ footage, it was established that inside the 200m SHUFFLE THE CASH was inclined to shift out away from IRONSTEIN when that runner was shifting out under pressure, and inside the 100m IRONSTEIN continued to shift out under pressure resulting in SHUFFLE THE CASH being taken out slightly. Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that this occurrence had a material affect on the placings and therefore dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion SMOKING CHIMNEYS (J. McDonald) had to be eased when tightened for room between RAEBURN (S. Galloway) and PERSIAN STAR (M. Walker), which shifted in slightly.
RAMBLING ON (C. Reith) was restrained in the early stages to the rear of the field to obtain a position closer to the fence.
MALING (A. Erhart) overraced in the early stages.
JEDI STARFIGHTER (J. Taylor) raced three wide in the early stages to a point near the 1500m.
After passing the 500m BAIL ME OUT (P. Hammersley) had to be checked when tightened for room between RAMBLING ON and JEDI STARFIGHTER which, when weakening, shifted in.
A post-race veterinary examination of JEDI STARFIGHTER revealed the horse to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer T. Thomas was advised that the horse must barrier trial satisfactorily and he must present a veterinary clearance for JEDI STARFIGHTER, including the results of an ECG, prior to the horse’s next start.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne regarding the performance of DE FINE LAGO. J. Byrne stated that the gelding, from a wide barrier, settled further back in the field than he would have liked and travelled comfortably until placed under pressure approaching the home turn and did not sprint as he expected and was disappointing. Trainer T. Vasil agreed that DE FINE LAGO had settled further back in the field than anticipated and he also was disappointed in the finishing effort of the gelding. Mr Vasil added that in his opinion the gelding is better suited on rain-affected tracks.
Race 6: W.J. HEALY STAKES - 1200m
1st – Pinwheel 2nd – Metallurgical 3rd – Swiss Rose 4th – Buffering
TEMPLE OF BOOM (C. Brown) raced three wide without cover throughout.
WARRIOR GIRL (J. Taylor) overraced in the early and middle stages and was also obliged to race three wide throughout.
After passing the 800m until approaching the 600m CARRY THE CLUBS (B. Avdulla) shifted in and bumped DEER VALLEY (J. Bowditch) on a number of occasions.
PINWHEEL was held up when unable to obtain clear running until approaching the 100m.
DEER VALLEY and CARIAD (J. Byrne) were also held up for clear running in the home straight until after passing the 200m.
SWISS ROSE (L. Nolen) was held up and unable to improve until approaching the 100m.
Race 7: SKY RACING TATTERSALL’S TIARA - 1400m
1st – Yosei 2nd – Beaded 3rd – Born To Rock 4th – Montana Flyer
Connections advised that they will instruct the jockey to ride BORN TO ROCK (C. Ormsby) with cover. The horse was ridden accordingly.
Approaching the 1000m VARENNA MISS (D. Dunn), when racing in restricted room to the inside of HURTLE MYRTLE (B. Avdulla), commenced to overrace and had to be checked to avoid the heels of BEADED (C. Brown).
RETURNTOSENDER (L. Nolen) overraced in the early stages.
SHE RULES (NZ) (D Browne) raced three wide without cover throughout.
ZERO ROCK (C. Munce) and HURTLE MYRTLE also raced three wide throughout.
ZINGALING (L. Cassidy) and ZIPPY LOU (J. Taylor) raced four wide throughout.
Rounding the home turn and in the straight until near the 250m VARENNA MISS was held up when unable to obtain clear running.
In the early stages of the home straight BEADED was unable to secure clear running when awkwardly placed at the heels of RETURNTOSENDER.
YOSEI (M. Payne) had difficulty obtaining clear running in the home straight until near the 250m.
B. Avdulla, the rider of HURTLE MYRTLE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 300m, when attempting to make a run between ZIPPY LOU and ZINGALING, his mount made heavy contact with the hind quarters of ZINGALING and had to be checked when tightened for room between ZINGALING and ZIPPY LOU, which shifted outwards. B. Avdulla’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 2 July, and expire at midnight on Friday, 15 July 2011.
Near the 200m ST GERMAINE (J. Riddell) had to be steadied when tightened for room between MONTANA FLYER (S. Seamer) and STEPS IN TIME (C. Reith) which shifted in slightly when weakening.
The veterinary surgeon reported that ZINGALING pulled up lame in the near foreleg following the event. Trainer K. Lees was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for ZINGALING prior to its next start.
A post-race veterinary examination of ZERO ROCK revealed the mare had sustained a laceration to the off hind pastern.
Stewards sought an explanation from Trainer S. Webb regarding the seemingly improved performance of YOSEI. Mr Webb stated that he was satisfied with the filly’s most recent start where it was only beaten 4½ lengths in the Dane Ripper Stakes as in that race after being slow to begin it sustained interference near the 1200m which in his view had an effect on YOSEI’s finishing position. Mr Webb added that the filly has worked well leading up to today’s race and whilst he believed it is most effective over a mile, the addition of blinkers today enhanced the horse’s competitive chances.
Race 8: TATTERSALL’S RACING CLUB MILE - 1600m
1st – Frozone 2nd – Devils Arcade 3rd – Atom Cat 4th – Willy Jimmy
FIREBOLT (C. Brown) underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start.
MEET GEORGE (L. Cassidy), FIFTEEN CARAT (T. Bell), WILLY JIMMY (R. Quinn) and EQUABLE (P. Hammersley) raced wide throughout.
Near the 200m BLAZING HEARTS (D. Dunn) had to be steadied and alter course when disappointed for a run between JAZZ HEART (J. Bowditch) and FIFTEEN CARAT. A short distance later FIFTEEN CARAT had to be steadied when it shifted in of its own accord and became awkward on the heels of MEET GEORGE.
KING OF THE NILE (J. Taylor) laid in under pressure in the straight and near the 200m had to be steadied when tightened for room between EL CHICO (M. Walker) and DRUMSHANBO (E. Wilkinson), both of which shifted ground.
C. Brown was provided with the opportunity of explaining the disappointing performance of FIREBOLT. Jockey Brown explained that the gelding travelled comfortably in the lead, however rounding the home turn was immediately under pressure when challenged and weakened badly in the home straight and in his view was very disappointing. Trainer R. James stated that FIREBOLT has performed similarly during its racing career and he was at a loss to explain the performance of the gelding as it had pleased him leading up to today’s race. Mr James undertook to report to stewards in the coming days anything which may explain today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of FIREBOLT revealed no significant abnormalities.
HOW MUCH MY LOVE (B. Avdulla) bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer D. Williams was advised that under the provisions of AR. 53A(4) HOW MUCH MY LOVE would be ineligible to race for a period of three months and must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward prior to resuming racing.
