From Doomben meeting, 6.8.11.
Stewards today continued the inquiry into the tactics adopted by L. Cassidy on RED ROYAL over the final 500m of Race 1. The inquiry had been adjourned to investigate betting activity on the race. However nothing untoward was identified in this area. L. Cassidy explained that as he was held up to the inside of PEPPERED BLACK at the 450m and rather than restrain RED ROYAL at that point, which he felt would cause his horse to lose momentum, he elected to endeavour to follow through to the inside of PEPPERED BLACK with the intent of obtaining a run should PEPPERED BLACK shift ground. However when this did not eventuate, RED ROYAL was held up for clear running until leaving the 100m. After considering the matter, stewards advised L. Cassidy that they were of the view that he had erred in taking this option. However when considering the matter with reference to the relevant rule, stewards were satisfied that jockey Cassidy’s decision to remain to the inside of PEPPERED BLACK, given that he was obliged to make a decision between the 2 courses of action very quickly, was not culpable in the circumstances.
From Doomben meeting, 6.7.11
Stewards today inquired into the reason for G. Colless being dislodged from FAVOURS TRADED at the winning post on the first occasion during Race 5. After taking evidence from G. Colless, J. Bowditch (ANOTHER INVADER) and apprentice T. Bell (CARRY ME BABY), it was established that FAVOURS TRADED shifted in at that point, resulting in the horse clipping the heels of ANOTHER TRADER and blundering, dislodging G. Colless. Stewards deemed the incident accidental with no horse or rider deemed responsible.

A. Best, rider of FLAMMABLE, reported his horse had a tendency to hang out rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.
Stewards questioned S. Seamer regarding the tactics adopted on EXCAPISHE today as compared to the previous tactics adopted on the gelding. S. Seamer advised stewards that the instructions given by the trainer were to ride the horse with a sit from its wide barrier. When questioned regarding this matter, trainer T. Bailey advised that he was concerned that the horse would not be able to obtain an on-pace position due to the pace in the race and its wide barrier, and he instructed the rider to try and obtain a position just off the pace. However this did not eventuate, with the horse caught racing wide for the majority of the event. Stewards noted the explanation given. Trainer T. Bailey further confirmed his disappointment with the horse’s performance and indicated that EXCAPISHE would now be sent for an immediate spell.

Correct weight was delayed to enable stewards to view footage of the start to ascertain whether FRETON, which missed the start by a considerable distance, had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the video of the start, stewards were satisfied that FRETON missed the start as a result of its own fractious behaviour, and therefore declared the horse a runner. Trainer T. Hall was advised that he would be required to provide a barrier certificate for FRETON prior to its next race start.
FLYING ALONG (J. Letherby), which was initially slow to begin, was then tightened for room between RIVER LAD (T. Bell) and URNFIELD (E. Wilkinson), which shifted in and away from RIOQUALO (B. Looker).
