Race 1: Blackwater QTIS 2yo H'cap - 1000m
1st – Snipzu 2nd – Discreet 3rd – Optionality 4th – First To Go

LILLABELLE (M. Gray) and PHANTOM CALLER (L. Cassidy) were slow to begin.

FLYING LAMBORGINI (C. Munce) shifted out at the start, hampering HUSSEZA (J. Byrne).

Passing the 600m, FIRST TO GO (J. Brown) commenced to lay out, taking HUSSEZA wider on the track.

HUSSEZA raced wide throughout.

FLYING LAMBORGINI lost its near fore plate in running.


Race 2: River Junction Droughtmasters F&M Class 6 H'cap – 1300m
1st – Just Destiny 2nd – Count your Fingers 3rd – Tafeer 4th – Lucky Songs

LUCKY SONGS (L. Rolls) and COUNT YOUR FINGERS (P. Hammersley) were slow to begin.

TAFEER (G. Colless) overraced in the middle stages. Rider G. Colless reported that TAFEER tied up following the event. A post race veterinary examination of TAFEER confirmed this condition.

Stewards sought an explanation regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of PARIS BLU. Rider M. Hellyer stated that, in his opinion, the mare handled the track however performed well below expectations and raced like a horse that had come to the end of its preparation. A post race veterinary examination revealed PARIS BLU to be sore in the off fore fetlock. Trainer B. Baldwin will be advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for PARIS BLU prior to its next race start.

Following this race the track rating was upgraded to Heavy 8 retrospective.


Race 3: T & J Whitehouse Investments F&M Class 6 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Pretty Pins 2nd – Our Design 3rd – Like A Gee Six 4th - Massuri

RESTLESS HEART (G. Killen) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Shortly after the start, MANZANO (L. Cassidy) and SO DOMINANT (E. Wilkinson) made contact on 2 occasions.

R. Wiggins, rider of REGAL LEGEND, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1200m, taking DAZZLING KIND (L. Rolls) in on to CARLSON’S FELT (P. Hammersley), which in turn shifted in, tightening the running of MANZANO, which had to be steadied.

Apprentice A. Butler reported that EXCALIBRE laid out during the middle stages of the race.

Upon straightening, MASSURI (A. Coome), which was initially taken out by PRETTY PINS (J. Byrne), continued to shift out and made contact with REGAL LEGEND (R. Wiggins).

Near the 300m, REGAL LEGEND had to be steadied from the heels of MASSURI, which was taken out by PRETTY PINS, which shifted out to improve at this stage.

DAZZLING KIND (L. Rolls) and MANZANO (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.


Race 4: Lance & Marie Knowles Class 6 H'cap - 1826m
1st – Rundle 2nd – They Won’t Last 3rd – Falontino 4th - Ausworld

DISPUTED BID was declared a late scratching at 8.10 am by order of the stewards.

LAPEL (J. Taylor) overraced in the early and middle stages.

Rounding the first turn, EXTREME MOVER got its head in the air for a short distance.

Near the 1300m, CARN (J. Brown) had to be steadied when tightened for room by EXTREME MOVER, which was taken in by AUSWORLD (B. Stewart). B. Stewart, rider of AUSWORLD, was reprimanded and advised he must be fully clear before shifting ground.

Passing the 300m, RUNDLE (G. Colless) shifted out to improve and made contact with the tiring WHISPERING GAP, which then shifted out, hampering THEY WON’T LAST (J. Byrne), which had to be steadied.

E. Wilkinson, rider of WHISPERING GAP, reported that the horse commenced to shorten stride inside the 300m and, in his opinion, failed to run out the 1800m distance today on the rain affected surface.

When asked to explain the seemingly improved performance of RUNDLE, trainer K. Purdy stated that the horse had been working well leading into its most recent run at Ipswich, however the rider reported to her on that occasion that RUNDLE had difficulty getting around the tight circuit. K. Purdy further added that the horse was having its third run back from a spell today and the gelding’s fitness had improved, and on the horse’s overall form today she was confident the horse would perform well today.

Stewards sought an explanation from P. Hammersley regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of RED GOD. P. Hammersley stated that the horse travelled well, however was immediately under pressure when he asked the horse to improve from the 600m. He added that RED GOD did not show its customary acceleration and raced flat. A post race veterinary examination of RED GOD failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

A post race veterinary examination of LAPEL, which compounded badly in the home straight, revealed the horse to be suffering from the thumps.

Race 5: Blackwater Quarries & Concrete NMW H'cap - 1600m
1st – Vipera Gold 2nd – Il Cardinale 3rd – Dienekes 4th – Dubai Prospect

COOLSHOW (B. Looker) was slow to begin.

SPECIAL SOMETHING (E. Wilkinson) overraced in the early and middle stages.

PREACHER BOY (J.Brown), COOLSHOW and SOUTHERN SHIMMER (R. Thompson) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards sought an explanation from B. Looker regarding the tactics he employed after his mount COOLSHOW missed the start. Apprentice Looker stated he was instructed to ride the horse in a forward position, as is its customary racing pattern, and even though the horse was slow to begin he was still hopeful of being able to gain a position closer to the lead as he was of the view that there was only moderate pace in the race. He added he was also informed by trainer Mr T. Gollan that COOLSHOW does not race well when forced to race in amongst other horses. The explanation was noted.

When asked for an explanation regarding the disappointing performance of SOUTHERN SHIMMER, jockey R. Thompson stated that the horse travelled well, and when the pace steadied through the middle stages he made a forward move wider on the track, however was under pressure passing the 500m and the gelding then failed to respond to his riding from that point. He added that whilst SOUTHERN SHIMMER has won on wet tracks earlier in its career, he believed the gelding was more effective on firm ground. R. Thompson also stated that the horse has had a substantial preparation this time in and, in his view, may be looking for a spell. A post race veterinary examination of SOUTHERN SHIMMER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.



Race 6: Stanton Mienert Accountants NMW H'cap - 1000m
1st – Hidden Shuffle 2nd – Jopa 3rd – Prime Cognac 4th - Quadardee

JOPA (P. Hammersley), KARANJA (L. Cassidy) and TENNESSEE BLUE (J. Brown) were slow to begin.

A short distance after the start, JOPA (P. Hammersley) had to be steadied when tightened for room between PRIME COGNAC (R. Wiggins), which shifted out, and QUADARDEE (J. Byrne), which shifted in after being bumped by CLASSY CRYSTAL (R. Thompson).

B. Stewart, rider of HIDDEN SHUFFLE, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 800m, taking QUADARDEE in on to PRIME COGNAC (R. Wiggins), which had to be steadied. PRIME COGNAC then overraced for a short distance at the heels of QUADARDEE.

Trainer W. Bannerot was advised that CLASSY CRYSTAL, which did not perform competitively, would be barred from metropolitan racing until such time as it establishes provincial form.

Following this event the track rating was upgraded to Slow 7.

Race 7: Nationwide Civil CG&E Class 6 H'cap – 1300m
1st – Eight Pieces 2nd – Jungle Heat 3rd – Kiss Me 4th – Santo De Lago

Stewards permitted GLOW HEART to race without percussion plates, which were part of that horse’s gear. Trainer R. Coveney was reprimanded for failing to advise this gear change by the prescribed time. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account trainer Coveney’s exemplary record.

SANTO DE LAGO (L. Rolls) overraced during the middle stages and upon straightening had to be steadied from the heels of JUNGLE HEAT (R. Wiggins) when shifting out to improve.

JUNGLE HEAT laid out under pressure in the straight.

When asked about the seemingly improved performance of EIGHT PIECES, trainer D. Hansen informed stewards that the horse had not started for a month prior to its last start and on that occasion was positioned on the speed in a very quickly run race, which he believed resulted in the horse’s fitness giving out over the concluding stages.

Race 8: Stanton Mienert Business Valuations Open H'cap - 1200m
1st – Joint Chiefs 2nd – Anyways 3rd – Youthful 4th – Sheedy

Trainer B. Wakefield was fined $200 for failing to declare a rider for JOINT CHIEFS by the prescribed time.

Due to impending severe thunderstorms that may have resulted in the abandonment of this event had it been run at the advertised starting time, Race 8 was started at 4.50 pm.

Apprentice M. Hellyer, rider of ANYWAYS, was fined $200 for using his whip in excess of 5 times prior to the 100m.
BAZZOOKA bled during the event. Trainer T. Cook was advised that as this was the second time the horse has bled, BAZZOOKA would now incur a lifetime bar from racing.
