Race 1: Channel Seven QTIS 2yo H'cap - 1000m
1st – Dansonate 2nd – Auchenflower 3rd –Congo 4th - Anikintime

CONGO (R. McMahon) was slow to begin.

TOP RADA (P. Hammersley) was hampered at the start when tightened for room between KHAANTANTES (L. Cassidy) and SIPPIN’BUNDY (C. Munce), both of which shifted ground.

Passing the 600m, ALL MY ANGELS (J. Stanley) commenced to hang out, which resulted in SIPPIN’BUNDY and CANNINGLY (P. Schmidt) being taken wider on the track.

SIPPIN’BUNDY (C. Munce) and CANNINGLY raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance of TOP RADA. P. Hammersley stated that the horse travelled well trailing HUSSLE, however when HUSSLE did not improve rounding the home turn, he was forced to seek clear running close to the fence. P. Hammersley added that the horse did not accelerate as expected and only finished the race off fairly. Trainer R. McCall advised stewards that ideally he would have liked to have stepped TOP RADA up in distance preferably over 1200m however he was unable to find a suitable race. A post race veterinary examination of failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

C. Munce reported that SIPPIN'BUNDY raced flat, as evidenced by the fact that he was required to ride the horse aggressively throughout the first 400m of the race and whilst it travelled kindly for a short distance during the middle stages, it did not accelerate as expected and proved disappointing. Trainer E. Hayes reported that he was disappointed with today’s performance as the gelding had recently trialled well. He added that a number of horses in his stable have recently had a virus and although SIPPIN'BUNDY has not exhibited any symptoms, he would have veterinary tests carried out on the horse in the coming days and undertook to report to stewards the findings of such examination. A post race veterinary examination of SIPPIN'BUNDY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer later reported to stewards that the vet tests did reveal that SIPPIN'BUNDY did have symptoms of a virus and would be having treatment for the virus before being sent for a spell.

Jockey L. Cassidy explained that KHAANTANTES was slow to begin but nevertheless he was able to find a nice position to the outside of the eventual winner. L. Cassidy added that KHAANTANTES did race with its head on the side and had a tendency to shift out throughout the middle stages. Trainer R. Heathcote was disappointed with the performance and undertook to have the horse examined by his veterinary surgeon, the results of which he would furnish to stewards.

Race 2: Sky Racing Benchmark 90 H'cap - 1000m
1st – Adebisi 2nd – Steel Zip 3rd – Tycoon Tattoo 4th – Geared Up

Given the horse’s good record, stewards placed a warning only on BLACKWOODS CHOICE. Stable representative Mr P. O’Sullivan was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for BLACKWOODS CHOICE prior to its next race start.

Stewards ordered all monies invest on BLACKWOODS CHOICE be refunded with the following deductions to apply on successful wagers as follows

3 cents in the dollar for 3rd place No. 4

INVENTORY (J. Brown) was slow to begin.

DOUBLE IMAGE (T. Bell), INVENTORY (J. Brown) and INANNA (P. Schmidt) raced wide throughout.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of DOUBLE IMAGE, T. Bell stated that the horse had a tendency to shift out and away from other runners in the early part of the race and was forced to race 3 wide without cover. He added that DOUBLE IMAGE put in an awkward stride entering the home straight and whilst he was then able to balance the horse and ask it for an effort, he did not feel that DOUBLE IMAGE was entirely comfortable down the home straight and was reluctant to stretch out. Trainer L. Kelly was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the poor performance other than to inform stewards the horse had previously had corrective surgery on the off fore knee and it was his intention to have x-rays carried out on the gelding in the coming days to establish whether that may have had an effect on the horse’s performance. Mr Kelly was advised that DOUBLE IMAGE would be required to trial satisfactorily, and he would have to produce a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next race start. A routine swab sample was taken from DOUBLE IMAGE.

Race 3: Johns Lyng Christmas Class 6 Plate - 2100m

KASAFUEGO (J. Taylor) was restrained at the start to gain a position closer to the rail.

After passing the winning post on the first occasion, ENTERPRISE START (Matthew Palmer) had to be eased to avoid the heels of THREE RED ROSES (M. Hellyer) and shifted in when not fully clear. M. Hellyer, rider of THREE RED ROSES, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

For a short distance passing the 1600m SAINT ROMAIN (J. Stanley) raced fiercely and got its head up when being restrained.

RED GOD (G. Colless) overraced in the middle stages.

Near the 200m, CHE CASINO was momentarily impeded for clear running when HASLINGTON was taken out by THREE RED ROSES.

EUREKA JACK (P. Hammersley) laid in when placed under pressure in the straight, placing its rider at a disadvantage in fully testing his mount.

Stewards sought an explanation from K. Pope regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of HASLINGTON. K. Pope stated that the horse was forced to race without cover outside the leader and as a result overraced, and whilst this may have had an effect on the horse’s capacity to finish the race off, he was nevertheless disappointed with the effort of HASLINGTON.

M. Hellyer, rider of THREE RED ROSES was fined $100 for returning to scale overweight.

Race 4: Grace Construction Products QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1500m

Rider C. Munce and trainer T. Austin were afforded the opportunity of explaining the seemingly disappointing performance of PLAYTIME. C. Munce stated that the horse travelled well, however was under pressure immediately upon entering the home straight and did not accelerate when asked and proved very one-paced in the run to the finish. He added that whilst the filly had to carry 58 kilograms, he did not believe this was a determining factor in the disappointing performance. T. Austin advised stewards that PLAYTIME had worked well in the lead up to today’s event and he was very confident that the filly would race well. Mr Austin further stated that he was extremely disappointed with the horse’s effort and that he would have his stable veterinary surgeon inspect the horse early this week, the findings of which he would furnish to stewards. A post race veterinary examination of PLAYTIME failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

After riding in race 3, M. Hellyer was stood down by the club’s doctor on his remaining mount, MISS WARREGO, and was replaced by T. O’Hara.

Wilkinson), FINN CLASS overraced and had to be restrained from the heels of KISS ME DEADLY. PEGUNNY CAT (T. Bell), which was following, also had to be steadied as a consequence. Following this incident, FINN CLASS continued to overrace for some distance.

After passing the 1100m when the pace steadied, FIRE UP FIFI (B. Stewart) improved to the inside of TROMBONE ALLEY (J. Stanley) where there was insufficient room and as a result had to be checked to avoid that runner’s heels. KAR MA TE (C. Munce), which was trailing, also had to be steadied and shift wider on the track.

M. Palmer was asked to explain his riding of DUEL SHOW over the final 400m, where it appeared he did not exhibit his normal vigour. M. Palmer stated that DUEL SHOW hung out for a major part of the race and when he placed some pressure on the gelding shortly after entering the home straight, DUEL SHOW shifted out and became awkward at the heels of ONE GUN (J. Taylor). DUEL SHOW continued to hang out for the remainder of the race and as a result he was unable to ride the gelding out in his usual manner. M. Palmer added that over the final 100m, DUEL SHOW worked to the line strongly.

T. Bell reported that PEGUNNY CAT hung out throughout the race, which resulted in being disadvantaged in fully testing his mount in the home straight.

A post race veterinary examination of URNFIELD revealed the horse had been galloped on on the near foreleg.

Race 7: In Memory of Corey Gilby Keith Noud Quality H'cap - 1200m
1st – Listen Son 2nd – Excellantes 3rd – Essington 4th – Ollie Vollie

At the start, BELTONE (C. Munce) jumped outwards and bumped POOR JUDGE (G. Colless), which in turn shifted out, taking FASTER SON (L. Cassidy) out on to SPIRIT OF BOOM (R. McMahon), which resulted in ESSINGTON (J. Taylor) having to be steadied when taken across the heels of EXCELLANTES (B. Stewart).

Near the 600m, BELLTONE (C. Munce) improved to the inside of IERQUALO (Matthew Palmer) where there was insufficient room, resulting in SHUFFLE THE CASH (E. Wilkinson) being momentarily tightened for room and having to be steadied.

POOR JUDGE (G. Colless) raced 3 wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from trainer T. Gollan in respect to the improved performance of LISTEN SON today. Mr Gollan was unable to provide any explanation and stated he was extremely disappointed with the horse’s performance in Melbourne given LISTEN SON has raced genuinely throughout its racing career. Mr Gollan added that subsequent to its most recent performance he had numerous veterinary tests carried out on the horse, all of which revealed no abnormalities. He further added that the tempo of the race today certainly enhanced the chances of runners racing on the speed.

When questioned regarding the performance of SPIRIT OF BOOM, R. McMahon stated that the horse travelled well and accelerated when asked for an effort below the 300m, however peaked on its run inside the final 100m. R. He said the gelding had settled at the rear of the field and that with the early speed in the race, he had expected SOLZENITSYN to run on, however when placed under pressure in the straight, the gelding failed to respond to his riding. Trainer R. Heathcote advised he was disappointed with the performance of SOLZHENITSYN, adding that the horse raced well previously when first up from a spell and was confident of a forward showing today.
