Apprentice B. Looker pleaded guilty to a charge under AR87D, in that he had in his possession a vest which had been modified, in particular the tail being removed from it. B. Looker was fined $400.
Race 1: Racing Retro QTIS 2yo Fillies H'cap - 1000m
1st – Doubtfilly 2nd – Headless 3rd – Optionality 4th - Parsnips
Stewards acceded to trainer S. Kendrick’s request for late gear change of blinkers for DOUBTFILLY. S. Kendrick was fined $200.
MOCK ME NOT (J. Stanley) and SIERRA RAPID (P. Keane) were slow to begin.
SHOW DIVA (P. Hammersley) and HEADLESS (C. Munce) made contact on jumping away.
PARSNIPS (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with the hind quarters of OPTIONALITY (L. Rolls).
Leaving the 700m, SHOW DIVA and MAFIA PRINCESS (S. Galloway) bumped.
Approaching the 600m, DOUBTFULLY (A. Coome) improved up on the heels of OPTIONALITY and had to be steadied.
Near the 600m, SHAMROCK SLIPPER (R. McMahon) shifted out, resulting in SHOW DIVA, which was racing greenly, being inconvenienced.
Passing the 500m SHOW DIVA was again inconvenienced when SHAMROCK SLIPPER shifted out.
CASINO CARD (G. Colless) laid out rounding the home turn.
DOUBTFULLY was held up in the early part of the straight.
KISS THIS (A. Allen) hung in when placed under pressure in the straight, resulting in its rider being disadvantaged in testing the horse. A post race veterinary examination of KISS THIS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer S. Morrissey was advised that a warning would be placed on KISS THIS regarding its racing manners. Mr Morrisey indicated that the horse will compete in a barrier trial, and he would remove the blinkers from KISS THIS for its next race start.
SIERRA RAPID (P. Keane) raced greenly throughout.
P. Hammersley was provided with the opportunity to explain the performance of SHOW DIVA. He stated that the filly raced greenly throughout, and near the 500m shifted out and away from SHAMROCK SLIPPER. Jockey Hammersley added that, in his opinion, SHOW DIVA will benefit from the experience of today’s race. A post race veterinary examination of SHOW DIVA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 2: www.brc.com.au Class 6 Plate - 1800m
1st – Gold Shears 2nd – Kumali 3rd – Marked 4th – Duel Show
I’LLBETRICKED (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.
Near the 1400m, I’LLBETRICKED overraced for a short distance and got its head up.
DUEL SHOW (J. Stanley) raced wide until assuming a position outside the leader near the 1200m.
Passing the 800m, EQUISSENTIAL (J. Brown) improved up onto the heels MARKED (P. Hammersley) and had to be steadied.
P. Hammersley, rider of MARKED, reported that he was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and until near the 300m when KUMALI (P. Keane) shifted away from the fence.
Near the 300m, B. Looker, rider of MOON CHASER, dropped his whip.
J. Stanley reported that DUEL SHOW hung out in the straight. This resulted in him being unable to fully test the horse in his usual manner.
R. McMahon informed stewards that he considered moving INTERVIEW wider around IN A TANGLE (M. Hellyer) after leaving the 600m when he became aware of GOLD SHEERS (S. Galloway) progressing to his outside, however as INTERVIEW was stepping up considerably in distance from its most recent start, he felt it was in the horse’s best interests to remain in a trailing position until reaching the home turn. He added that INTERVIEW accelerated when pressured in the straight but peaked on its run inside the final 100m. Jockey McMahon further stated that INTERVIEW would take a fitness benefit from today’s performance.
Race 3: Sky Racing Benchmark 90 H'cap – 2100m
1st – Mr Light Blue 2nd – Majestic Sound 3rd – Eureka Jack 4th – Winmara
Upon return to scale, apprentice P. Keane, rider of GOLD RATING, was identified as weighing in at 54.74 kilograms. This was in excess of half a kilogram under its allotted weight. In accordance with the Australian Rule of Racing 143(a), which reads:
“If a horse carries less weight than the weight its should carry, it shall be disqualified from the race provided that the rider shall be allowed by the Clerk of Scales half a kilogram for the weight of its bridle.”
Stewards disqualified GOLD RATING from its first placing and amended the placings accordingly. At a subsequent inquiry, evidence was taken from officials R. McCrae and G. Tozer, the persons responsible for weighing riders out, who provided written and verbal evidence which established that apprentice Keane had weighed out at 55.60 kilograms. Apprentice Keane and trainer M. Nolan acknowledged that the gear carried by the horse had not been altered from that which apprentice Keane had weighed out with. Apprentice Keane subsequently pleaded guilty to the charge under AR143(b) which reads:
“If a horse carries less weight than the weight its should carry the rider and/or any person at fault may be penalised.”
Given the serious nature of the offence, stewards adjourned the matter to enable apprentice Keane’s master to be present to provide submissions in respect of any penalty that may be imposed.
BUGSYTWOSHOES (B. Looker) was slow to begin.
INTERTHEBLACK (L. Rolls) commenced to overrace during the middle stages.
A post race veterinary examination of PINOT GIRL revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg and was short striding in front. Connections will be advised that a veterinary clearance will be required for PINOT GIRL prior to its next race start.
Race 4: Hidden Dragon @ Lyndhurst QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1200m
1st – Empress 2nd – Kilwinning Option 3rd – Chew The Fat 4th - Kahui
Following veterinary advice, stewards acceded to a late request from trainer P. Duff for the tongue-tie to be added to the gear of KAHUI
FORTY ZIP (D. Browne) blundered at the start and shifted out, taking MOROCCAN DANCER (J. Taylor) out on to BOODLES’N’BOODLES (M. Hellyer).
Near the 900m, WISHBONE JACK (M. Wood) improved up on to the heels of ROYAL SHOUT and had to be steadied.
ALDINI (L. Rolls) overraced throughout the middle stages.
MOROCCAN DANCER hung out during the middle stages of the race and near the 500m made contact with CHEW THE FAT (C. Munce) on several occasions.
CHEW THE FAT commenced to lay in passing the 400m, resulting in MOROCCAN DANCER (J. Taylor) being taken in on to the heels of BOODLES’N’DOODLES and having to be steadied. CHEW THE FAT continued to hang in, resulting in its rider being unable to fully test the horse in the home straight.
WELL CREDENTIALLED (P. Hammersley) was held up in the straight until near the 250m.
ROYAL SHOUT (G. Colless) was held up in the straight until near the 200m.
WISHBONE JACK was held up in the straight until approaching the 100m.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey R. McMahon and trainer L. Rowe in regard to the apparent change of tactics today on KILWINNING OPTION. Jockey McMahon stated that he was instructed to ride the horse in a forward position, in accordance with its customary racing pattern. However he explained the KILWINNING OPTION was fractious in the barriers and as the start was effected the horse was leaning on the near-side barrier partition. He added that this resulted in KILWINNING OPTION beginning awkwardly and losing ground. R. McMahon further stated that he then attempted to gain a position closer to the fence, which resulted in him having to having to race in a position further back then he would have liked. Trainer L. Rowe confirmed the instructions, and after having an opportunity to view the stewards patrol footage, he felt R. McMahon had little option but to ride the horse in the manner he did after being slowly into stride.
BOODLES’N’BOODLES and CHEW THE FAT raced wide throughout.
B. Looker reported that PEPPERED BLACK at no stage travelled comfortably and was forced to pressure the horse throughout the event. Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith reported that in light of today’s performance the colt would undergo a gelding operation.
Race 5: Coca-Cola Amatil NMW H'cap - 1000m
1st – Devils Melody 2nd – Bruleur 3rd – Crystal Doll 4th – Lambert
The start of the race was delayed after EXTRA EXCELERATION (S. Galloway) became fractious in the barriers. The horse was removed from the gates, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.
ORIGINATE (P. Hammersley) and FIDAKAT (J. Brown) were slow to begin.
Near the 700m, SUCHABIMBO (J. Taylor) was momentarily inconvenienced when ALL THAT (B. Looker) shifted in.
ALL THAT faltered near the 350m.
C. Munce reported that JESSICA’S DREAM travelled comfortably until placed under pressure in the straight, at which stage it commenced to compound and, in his opinion, did not feel comfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination of JESSICA’S DREAM revealed it to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer B. Bellamy was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for JESSICA’S DREAM, including the results of an ECG examination, and that it must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.
Race 6: SkyRacing.TV Benchmark 90 H'cap - 1500m
1st – Tomboy 2nd – Luckyk Luna 3rd – Prost 4th - Emoticon
Near the 700m, DIAGO (S. Galloway), which was hanging out, had to be checked after being momentarily tightened for room by EMOTICON (A. Best). Whilst stewards were satisfied that the major contributor to the incident was the racing manners of DIAGO, they nevertheless advised A. Best, rider of EMOTICON, to ensure he provides his fellow riders sufficient racing room in similar circumstances in future.
DIAGO was momentarily held up for clear running in the early part of the straight when awkwardly placed at the heels of LUCKY LUNA (M. Wood).
DIAGO overraced and hung out for a major part of the race until entering the home straight.
LUCKY LUNA and URNFIELD (L. Rolls) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance of USAIN PRINCE. Rider J. Drury reported that the horse raced fiercely and laid in, which she felt had an impact on its capacity to finish the race off. Trainer S. Grills stated that in view of the horse’s performance, she felt it had come to the end of its preparation and intended to spell USAIN PRINCE immediately.
Race 7: Sequalo @ Lyndhurst Open H'cap - 1200m
1st – The Sixties 2nd – Purettan 3rd – Fangles 4th – Ollie Vollie
TYCOON’S PRIDE (J. Brown) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
SHAMARDASHING (G. Colless) was slow to begin.
Near the 1100m, TYCOON’S PRIDE was momentarily tightened for room by DALZAR (M. Wood), which shifted in.
TYCOON’S PRIDE overraced at the heels of REILLY BLUE (C. Munce) during the middle stages.
Near the 400m, REILLY BLUE and PURETTAN (P. Hammersley) came into contact when C. Munce, rider of REILLY BLUE, attempted to shift out to improve.
G. Colless, rider of SHAMARDASHING, reported the horse laid in under pressure in the straight.
PATTIES MATE (R. Hancock), OLLIE VOLLIE (J. Drury) and REGAL CASTANEA (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Taylor regarding his riding of REGAL CASTANEA over the final 400m, particularly his apparent lack of vigour. J. Taylor explained that REGAL CASTANEA was having its first run back from a spell and he felt the gelding was performing at its peak under hands and heels riding and using his whip sparingly. Stewards noted the explanation but nevertheless reminded J. Taylor of his obligations to ride his mounts out in a manner that does not leave him open to question.
Race 8: Winning Edge Presentations Class 6 H'cap - 1200m
1st – Maroon Bells 2nd – Achievements 3rd – Just A Piccolo 4th – Magic Tartan
Trainer L. Gough was fined $200 for failing to declare L. Rolls as the rider of ENCINITAS, by the prescribed time.
MAROON BELLS (G. Killen) and JUST A PICCOLO (J. Stanley) were slow to begin.
Near the 1000m, ENCINITAS (L. Rolls) shifted out around the heels of the leader MONDEAN, resulting in ACHIEVEMENTS (C. Munce) having to be steadied to avoid the heels of ENCINITIS.
Rounding the home turn and until approaching the 300m, MAROON BELLS was held up when unable to secure clear running.
After passing the 300m, SKY EFFORT (B. Looker was inconvenienced by ENCINITAS when that runner shifted in and away from ACHIEVEMENTS.
ACHIEVEMENTS was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 300m.
After passing the 200m, I’M RUTHLESS (P. Hammesley) was obliged to alter course to the outside of the heels of THE REVELLER (G. Colless) when that runner commenced to weaken.
TIGHTROPE (A. Pattillo) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the performance of THE REVELLER, G. Colless explained that the gelding travelled well until he shifted to the outside of ACHIEVEMENTS near the 400m, at which stage it commenced to tire and hang in. G. Colless added that the THE REVELLER has shown a tendency to hang in its races when late in its preparation. Trainer M. Dunn informed stewards of his disappointment in the performance of THE REVELLER and advised that it was his intention to freshen the horse up. A post race veterinary examination of THE REVELLER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
