Supplementary Report
From Eagle Farm 2.06.12 - Apprentice Tim Bell was fined the sum of $700 for using the whip 9 times prior to the 100m on Celtic Dancer in race 8.
As K. McEvoy was indisposed, riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.
Race 1: Southbank Insurance Brokers Class 6 H'cap - 1200m
1st – Signified 2nd – Tahitian Black 3rd – Captain Clayton 4th – Dux Bellorum
THREE SWALLOWS (K. Matheson) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out bumping THEFIFTHHOLE (L. Cassidy), which was taken out on to VITAL ORGAN (G. Colless).
Near the 1100m, CAPTAIN CLAYTON (J. Byrne) raced in restricted room between SIGNIFIED (R. Myers) and THREE SWALLOWS, which shifted in. K. Matherson, rider of THREE SWALLOWS, was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances.
Rounding the home turn, ZEKEZA (J. Taylor) was inconvenienced when SIGNIFIED shifted out in order to improve.
THREE SWALLOWS, RAISE UP and DANEOMITE (L. Rolls) raced wide for the majority of the race.
S. Galloway reported that he was instructed to ride BROOKTON TIARA in a position just behind the speed, however shortly after rounding the first turn, SLUGSBROTHERNUGGET (G. Cooksley), which he was trailing, steadied, resulting in him being placed further back in the field than anticipated. He added that BROOKTON TIARA resented racing in restricted room between CAPTAIN CLAYTON and THREE SWALLOWS in the middle stages of the race. S. Galloway further stated that BROOKTON TIARA will be better suited in races of a further distance than that of today’s event.
Jockey L. Cassidy, rider of THEFIFTHHOLE, stated that his mount was slow to begin and was unable to take up its customary position in the lead. He added that the gelding weakened badly in the home straight and he was not satisfied with its action. Stable representative Mr S. Morrisey indicated that THEFIFTHHOLE had worked well leading up to today’s race but may have come to the end of its current preparation and would now likely be sent for a spell. A post race veterinary examination of THEFIFTHHOLE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Stewards sought an explanation from M. Walker regarding the performance of RAISE UP. He explained he was instructed to take up a forward position but due to there being a fast pace in the early stages he was unable to muster the necessary speed and settled in a position midfield 3 wide. M. Walker added that RAISE UP did not respond to his riding from the 400m and proved disappointing. Trainer K. Schweida was also disappointed with the performance of RAISE UP and indicated that the mare would now be sent for an immediate spell. A post race veterinary examination of RAISE UP failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 2: Hardy Brothers Jewellers QTIS 3yo - 1200m
1st – Howmuchdoyouloveme 2nd – Aldini 3rd – Stradon 4th – Black Magic
WAR CHARM was declared a late scratching at 10.25 am on veterinary advice.
Connections advised that from the wide gate UPPLAND would be ridden further back in the field. UPPLAND was ridden accordingly.
Correct weight was delayed to enable stewards to view footage of the start to ascertain if KELBENJAR had been afforded a fair start. After viewing footage of the start, stewards were satisfied that the gelding had secured a fair start, however reared as the start was effected and lost ground.
STRADON (R. Wiggins) lowered its head as the start was effected and as a result was slow to begin.
Near the 1000m, STATE OF WEALTH (R. McMahon) shifted in slightly, taking STRADON (R. Wiggins) in on to BLACK MAGIC (J. Ford), resulting in tightening to that runner. BLACK MAGIC then overreacted to this tightening and shifted out across the heels of STRADON, having to be checked. At the same stage, LONGSHOREMAN (S. Galloway) had to be momentarily steadied from the heels of HOWMUCHDOYOULOVEME (B. Avdulla), which shifted in. Both R. McMahon, rider of STATE OF WEALTH, and B. Avdulla, rider of HOWMUCHDOYOULOVEME, were advised to exercise more care.
VIKING HEART (C. Munce) overraced in the early stages and raced wide throughout.
Jockey M. Walker asked to explain the performance of MAZZANO, which after weakening from the 300m raced very greenly from that point. He explained that MAZZANO has been able to lead unchallenged at its 2 most recent starts and when HOWMUCHDOYOULOVEME improved to his outside in the early part of the straight, MAZZANO raced ungenerously and shifted its ground, which led him believe the horse was not comfortable racing inside other horses.
Trainer R. Heathcote reported that CASTLE HILL had sustained a small laceration to its near hind leg consistent with having been galloped on.
Race 3: Hamilton Hotel Benchmark 85 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Fire Up Fifi 2nd – Symposium 3rd – Bianca Jewel 4th - Machination
Leaving the 1300m, BIANCA JEWEL (R. Wiggins) had to be steadied when tightened for room between FIRE UP FIFI (K. Matheson), which shifted out, and OAK STREET (C. Munce) which shifted in slightly. BIANCA JEWEL then overraced and near the 1000m had to be restrained from the heels of MACHNATION (P. Schmidt) for some distance.
Near the 1000m, GENERAL PURPLE (R. McMahon) shifted in slightly, taking SYMPOSIUM (R. Hurdle) in, which made slight contact with DUSTY GOLD. DUSTY GOLD then became very unbalanced and shifted inwards and made contact with the running rail. PRIMED (B. Richardson) and MR SLICK (L. Rolls), which were following, had to be checked as a consequence. Whilst the interference suffered by DUSTY GOLD, PRIMED and MR SLICK was significant, stewards could not be satisfied this was as a result of any careless riding on behalf of any rider and felt the manner in which DUSTY GOLD overreacted to slight contact had been a significant contributor to this incident and therefore no direct action was taken.
DUSTY GOLD (G. Colless) laid out in the home straight.
FIRE UP FIFI was held up for clear running in the straight until near the 250m.
EXTREME MOVER (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.
Trainer B. Guy indicated that following the disappointing performance of OAK STREET, it will now be sent for an immediate spell.
Race 4: Cetenary Classic Mercedes-Benz Stakes – 1400m
1st – Hoss Amor 2nd – Caliente 3rd – Saluter 4th - Discreet
PLATINUM STATE (G. Colless) blundered at the start.
SUNSET AFFAIR (R. McMahon) was tightened for room at the start between BIG DECISION (J. Byrne) and WRITE CHEEK (D. Dunn), both of which shifted ground.
G. Cooksley, rider of HOLEY GADOLEY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1200m he permitted his mount to shift in, resulting in WRITE CHEEK being taken in on to BIG DECISION (J. Byrne), which had to be checked. G. Cooksley was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 30 June and to expire at midnight, 11 July 2012.
After being checked near the 1200m, BIG DECISION (J. Byrne) overraced in the early stages and near the 1000m had to be restrained from the heels of WRITE CHEEK.
Near the 300m, GAY DECEIVER (P. Holmes) had to be steadied when tightened for room by CALIENTE (L. Cassidy), which shifted in when not fully clear. A short distance later, WRITE CHEEK had to be eased when tightened for room by CALIENTE, which continued to shift in. L. Cassidy rider of CALIENTE, was issued with a severe reprimand and advised he must make greater efforts to keep his mounts on a straight course.
DISCREET (D. Oliver) was unable to secure clear running in the home straight and went to the line not fully tested by its rider.
SUNSET AFFAIR had difficulty securing clear running in the straight and inside the final 100m was unable to fully test his mount when racing in restricted room to the inside of HOLEY GADOLEY.
CALIENTE and GAY DECEIVER raced wide for the majority of the event.
A post race veterinary examination of TISPURA TONITE revealed the horse to be lame in the near hind leg. Trainer B. Hill will be advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for TISPURA TONITE prior to its next race start.
SUBSTATION lost its near fore plate in running.
A post race veterinary examination of PLATININUM STATE revealed it to be suffering form slight post-race distress.
Race 5: Carlon Mid-Tattersall’s Racing Club Mile - 1600m
1st – Firebolt 2nd – Jetset Lad 3rd – Listen Son 4th – Carry Me Bluey
On return to scale a protest was lodged by R. McMahon, rider of the 2nd placegetter, JETSET LAD, against FIREBOLT being declared the winner, alleging interference in the early part of the straight. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards’ patrol films, stewards were of the view that at a point near the 300m a run became available between MYSTICAL REY (E. Wilkinson) and LISTEN SON (C. Munce) which was capitalised upon by FIREBOLT (H. Bowman). This resulted in JETSET LAD being held up on the heels of that runner or a short distance. Stewards were of the view that the incident did not have any material effect on the result of the race and therefore dismissed the objection and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge’s placings.
JETSET LAD (R. McMahon) reared at the start and lost considerable ground.
After passing the 300m, MYSTICAL GREY (E. Wilkinson), which was weakening, was tightened for room between EQUISSENTIAL (J. Byrne) and JETSET LAD R. McMahon), which shifted out to obtain clear running when not fully clear.
Race 6: Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup – 2200m
1st – Ginga Dude 2nd – Booming 3rd – Warrior Within 4th - Shamardashing
As R. McMahon was to be overweight, J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of LOVES A CHALLENGE. R. McMahon was fined $200.
RUNDLE was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 8.20 am.
LOVES A CHALLENGE (J. Taylor) shifted out at the start, making contact with SHAMARDASHING (J. Lloyd).
SHAMARDASHING and MR LIGHT BLUE (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
Race 7: Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara - 1400m
1st – Pear Tart 2nd – Skyerush 3rd – Gai’s Choice 4th – Red Tracer
SOFT SAND (D. Oliver) and BALMONT (T. Bell) were slow to begin.
ALTHERIGHTMOVES (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, making heavy contact with the hind quarters of RED TRACER (H. Bowman).
SOFT SAND (D. Oliver) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with the hind quarters of MID SUMMER MUSIC (B. Melham).
Soon after the start, DIVORCES (G. Cooksley) had to be checked when tightened for room between SISTINE ANGEL (R. McMahon) and RISK AVERSION (C. Munce), which was taken in by BONNIE MAC (E. Wilkinson), which shifted in away from SHOPAHOLIC (D. Dunn).
Near the 1300m, SHPAHOLIC shifted in and bumped BONNIE MAC.
Approaching the 1000m when FORFEITURE (D. Griffin) restrained to take a trailing position behind SHOPAHOLIC. MID SUMMER MUSIC (B. Melham), which was following, was obliged to shift out abruptly to avoid the heels of FORFEITURE. As a result of MID SUMMER MUSIC shifting out, SO PRISTINE was taken wider on the track.
Near the 900m, MISS KEEPSAKE (L. Cassidy), when overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of MID SUMMER MUSIC. SOFT SAND, which was following, had to be checked and shifted wider on the track.
D. Dunn, rider of SHOPAHOLIC, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of ALLTHERIGHTMOVES (J. Taylor), resulting in J. Taylor having to take hold of that horse and relinquish his rightful position. D. Dunn was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 1 July and to expire at midnight, 13 July.
Approaching the 600m until approaching the home turn, SISTINE ANGEL raced in restricted room between ALLTHERIGHTMOVES and FORFEITURE, which was taken in slightly by MID SUMMER MUSIC.
Near the 400m, BONNIE MAC, which was hanging out, shifted out, resulting in SHPAHOLIC being taken out and bumping heavily with MID SUMMER MUSIC.
Passing the 250m, SISTINE ANGEL (R. McMahon) had to be eased when tightened for room between BONNIE MAC and ALLTHERIGHTMOVES, which shifted out under pressure.
Leaving the 200m, ALLTHERIGHTMOVES shifted out away from RISK AVERSION, taking BONNIE MAC outwards. At the same stage, MID SUMMER MUSIC shifted in, taking SHOPAHOLIC inwards, which resulted in BONNIE MAC being tightened for room. When being steadied, BONNIE MAC, which was tiring, became unbalanced and lost ground abruptly, resulting in FORFEITURE, which was trailing, having to be severely checked.
RISK AVERSION (C. Munce) was held up for clear running until near the 150m.
MID SUMMER MUSIC, SO PRISTINE and SOFT SAND all raced wide throughout.
After passing the winning post, SISTINE ANGEL clipped the heels of ALLTHERIGHTMOVES, which shifted in away from SHOPAHOLIC, which was taken in slightly by MID SUMMER MUSIC. Stewards were satisfied that the racing manners of ALLTHERIGHTMOVES were a major factor in this incident and no action was taken.
Pending further submissions from jockey B. Melham, stewards issued a $500 fine against jockey B. Melham for leaving the course after being directed to remain.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey D. Oliver regarding the performance of SOFT SAND today. D. Oliver stated that he was obliged to settle the horse towards the rear of the field from its wide barrier and after being steadied from the heels of MISS KEEPSAKE near the 900m SOFT SAND was forced to travel wide without cover. He added that SOFT SAND made some ground in the straight however in his view the pattern of racing today advantaged horses racing up on the speed. Trainer C. Little concurred with the comments of D. Oliver in respect to the inability of horses to make ground today and advised stewards he would spell the filly in preparation for the Spring Carnival.
A post race veterinary examination of SOFT SAND failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
ALTHERIGHTMOVES lost its near fore plate in running.
Race 8: W.J. Healy Stakes – 1200m
1st – River Lad 2nd – Excellantes 3rd – Griffon 4th – Durham Town
Approaching the 200m, TIERQUALO (D. Griffin), which was hanging out, shifted out and bumped HAVATRYST (L. Cassidy).
RIVER LAD (T. Bell) shifted out under pressure over the final 200m.
TIERQUALO (D. Griffin), HAVATRYST (L. Cassidy) and DURHAM TOWN (J. Lloyd) raced wide throughout.
D. Griffin reported that TIERQUALO hung out for a major part of the race.
G. Colless (AUDACIOUS SPIRIT) and D. Oliver (ADEBISI) were interviewed regarding the tactics adopted on their respective mounts, which resulted in a faster than average sectional time for the first part of the race. G. Colless stated that he was instructed to lead in accordance with his mount’s customary racing pattern as it is a free-running horse and races best without restraint. He added that the horse led quite easily in the early stages however once ADEBESI progressed to his outside leaving the 900m he was unable to settle AUDACIOUS SPIRIT which resulted in a fast speed in the early stages. D. Oliver stated that he was instructed to take up a forward position and he was forced to pressure ADEBESI approaching the first turn to gain a position closer to the rail when TIERQUALO improved to his inside running to that turn. D. Oliver added that when he reached the position outside of AUDACIOUS SPIRIT he was unable to restrain ADEBESI and whilst he was aware the speed was quite fast, he was unable to slow the tempo. After considering the explanations of both riders and also considering the racing pattern of both horses in the past, their explanations were accepted.
