Race 1: PPG Australia Benchmark 95 H'cap - 2200m
1st – Bell Academy 2nd – Warrior within 3rd – Racing Heart 4th – Court Connection

MACSQUIRE (R. Hurdle) was a little slow to begin.

Stewards questioned apprentice K. Matheson regarding his riding of WARRIOR WITHIN between the 600m and 400m where BELL ACADEMY was able to move away from the rail ahead of him to improve into the race. Apprentice Matheson stated that the gelding never travelled comfortably on the slow track, however did acknowledge at that stage of the race he would have been better served to hold a more prominent trailing position behind RACING HEART which would have kept BELL ACADEMY on its inside. Trainer B. Hill stated that WARRIOR WITHIN is a somewhat difficult horse to ride and has shown on previous occasions to lose concentration at stages during races. Stewards were of the view that apprentice Matheson may have erred in not holding a position on WARRIOR WITHIN trailing RACING HEART but did not believe that the error to be culpable under the rules.

When questioned regarding the performance of RACING HEART, apprentice A. Allen stated that the horse, in his opinion, felt flat and he was of the view that the gelding failed to back up from its start here last week on 14 July.
Stewards questioned trainer B. Herne regarding the seemingly improved performance of BELL ACADEMY today as compared to its unplaced run at the Sunshine Coast on 1 July. Mr Herne stated that the horse failed to handle the synthetic track surface on that day and felt its was better suited in today’s conditions.

R. McMahon was fined $200 for changing his boots after weighing out.

Apprentice R. Hurdle was fined $300 for changing his boots after weighing out. In deciding penalty, stewards were mindful that apprentice Hurdle had been specifically advised by stewards he must ride in boots that he weighed out in.

LADY BUTTERFLY was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 11.58 am.

COMPLETE SECRET (S. Thurlow) began awkwardly and shifted in, making heavy contact with CHIRICAHUA (J. Byrne), which in turn shifted in, tightening the running of FRAEZEICHEN (E. Wilkinson).

OFFENSE (J. Lloyd) overraced in the early stages.

Near the 1200m, FUSIL DE EVE (J. Stanley) and SHOW A NOEE (D. Browne) were both checked when racing to the inside of DISCREET (C. Munce), which was taken in by GAY DECEIVER (M. Vance). At a subsequent inquiry, M. Vance was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that she permitted her mount to shift in when not clear of DISCREET, resulting in it shifting in, tightening SHOW A NOEEE, which inturn forced FUSIL DE EVE to be checked and lose its position. M. Vance was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 28 July and to expire at midnight, 8 August.

Leaving the 500m, CHIRICAHUA (J. Byrne) shifted out and bumped COMPLETE SECRET (S. Thurlow).

COMPLETE SECRET raced wide for the majority of the race.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FUSIL DE EVE, J. Stanley stated that after being checked approaching the 1200m, he was forced to the rail, where after that point he felt the filly failed to handle the slow going and proved most disappointing. He added that the increase in weight and the prevailing track conditions were the contributing factors in the disappointing performance of FUSIL DE EVE.

FRAEZEICHEN had difficulty obtaining clear running from around the hometurn and until near the 200m.

Jockey R. Wiggins was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FANTISHA. R. Wiggins was of the opinion that the horse failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. Stewards will contact trainer S. O’Dea regarding the post-race recovery of FANTISHA.

VENTURE ON (R. McMahon) had difficulty obtaining clear running between the 300m and 200m.

LE NIZAM (R. Wiggins) raced wide throughout.

Race 5: Travel Associates QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1500m

EVERYTHING TO GAIN, which dislodged its rider when proceeding to the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

BLACK MAGIC (J. Byrne) and NOISY OCEAN (K. Matheson) were both slow to begin.

Passing the 1200m, VIKING HEART (G. Colless) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of EVERYTHING TO GAIN (E. Wilkinson).

Near the 1200m, COLLECTOR (J. Lloyd) shifted in and bumped NOISY OCEAN (K. Matherson).

Near the 700m, PINTUCK (T. Bell) was tightened for room when racing between IKING (D. Browne) and ATLANTIS GEM (R. Hurdle), which shifted out. R. Hurdle, rider of ATLANTIS GEM, was reprimanded.

PEACE TALKS (B. Richardson) had laid in badly under pressure in the straight and approaching the 100m shifted in, crowding the running of NOISY OCEAN. In this incident, NOISY OCEAN was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of B. Richardson, rider of PEACE TALKS.

The saddle on MISS SMOKE (J. Taylor) slipped to the near-side at the start, placing its rider at a disadvantage for the entire event.

Leaving the 200m COLLECTOR shifted in and crowded the running of EVERYTHING TO GAIN.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BLACK MAGIC, J. Byrne stated that the horse was unusually fractious pre race and never travelled well at any stage. Trainer D. Brown confirmed his disappointment with the filly’s performance and advised that BLACK MAGIC would now be sent for a spell. A post race veterinary examination of BLACK MAGIC failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

A post race veterinary examination of IKING revealed the horse had been galloped on on its off hind leg.

Race 6: Carlton Draught Country Cup – Special Conditions - 1200m

Stewards questioned G. Colless regarding the disappointing performance of IBALANCE. He stated that the horse settled in a more forward position than anticipated but never travelled well at any stage. Trainer J. Shelton confirmed his disappointment with the gelding’s performance and advised it would be the intention to give the horse a slight ease up. A post race veterinary examination of IBALANCE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 7: Des Lambart Memorial Class 6 H'cap - 1830m
1st – Cash ‘n’ Style 2nd – Fire Up Fifi 3rd – Angusroy 4th – Eastline

On return to scale a protest was lodged by connections of the 2nd placegetter, FIRE UP FIFI against CASH ‘N’ STYLE being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 500m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewed the patrol videos, the protest was dismissed and correct weight semaphored on the Judge’s placings. After dismissing the protest, stewards gave consideration as to whether the objection lodged was frivolous, however after taking into account apprentice Hurdle’s limited experience, stewards took no further action other than to remind apprentice Hurdle that he must have sufficient grounds to lodge a protest.

Stewards questioned apprentice A. Allen regarding the tactics adopted on GOLDCAT, which clearly led in the early and middle stages of the race setting a solid tempo. Apprentice Allen stated the instructions were to race in a handy position and allow the horse to settle where it was comfortable. He added that when he attempted to ease on the gelding it resented this action and would not settle. Stewards noted the explanation.

Leaving the 300m, ANGUSROY (S. Galloway) was disappointed for a run between CYCLINE AL (G. Colless) and TAMANU PARK (J. Byrne) .

CLEVER HANS (G. Lynch) shifted out under pressure in the run to the finish.

ADNOCON (D. Browne) and FALINO (M. Hellyer) both raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the disappointing performance of BELTONE. Jockey Munce could offer no tangible explanation for the horse’s poor performance as it travelled well until placed under pressure leaving the 500m. Stewards will contact trainer K. Wood at a later date regarding the performance and recovery of BELTONE. A post race veterinary examination of BELTONE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 9: Hardy Brothers Jewellers Special Conditions H'cap - 1500m
