Race 1: SITA AUSTRALIA F&M CLASS 3 PLATE - 1200m
1st – Flinders City 2nd – Ishi Classic 3rd – I’m Busy 4th – Egyptian Tomb
TIYATRO (R. McMahon) reared at the start and lost ground.
EGYPTIAN TOMB (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin.
I’M BUSY (K. Wharton) hung out in the early stages.
A. Spinks reported that REPETITIOUS hung out from the 700m. A post-race veterinary examination of REPETITIOUS revealed no abnormalities.
Race 2: ORMISTON COLLEGE 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Riddle Me This 2nd – Pretty Face 3rd – In Bangkok 4th – Sunday Expert
Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $200 for failing to scratch LEUROCITY by the prescribed time.
G. Cooksley (IT’S ON THE POCKET) was struck in the head by his mount during the preliminary. G. Cooksley dismounted behind the barriers and after consulting with the starter expressed that he was satisfied he was fit to take his ride.
ABOVE US (R. Hurdle) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with SUNDAY EXPERT (C. Munce) which was taken out and hampered SPENT (Michael Palmer).
Soon after the start FASTEN (S. Galloway) had to be eased when tightened for room between PRETTY FACE (R. Wiggins), which shifted in away from IN BANGKOK (J. Lloyd), and I’M NOT OVER (L. Cassidy), which was taken out slightly by RIDDLE ME THIS (R. McMahon).
Near the 900m IT’S ON THE POCKET (G. Cooksley) had to be eased when tightened for room between SPENT and I’M NOT OVER which when racing greenly shifted in away from IN BANGKOK.
I’M NOT OVER raced three wide throughout.
Near the 450m SUNDAY EXPERT improved on to the heels of RIDDLE ME THIS, shifted out and made contact with I’M NOT OVER. SUNDAY EXPERT then altered course to the inside of RIDDLE ME THIS in order to improve.
Stewards sought an explanation from G. Cooksley regarding the performance of IT’S ON THE POCKET. G. Cooksley stated that the colt raced very greenly throughout and near the 400m shifted in and made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced. He added that in the home straight IT’S ON THE POCKET was inclined to lay out. He further stated that in his opinion IT’S ON THE POCKET resented racing in the crossover noseband and he recommended to trainer L. Gough that this gear be removed for future starts.
When asked to explain the performance of ABOVE US, apprentice R. Hurdle stated that the gelding travelled comfortably until placed under pressure approaching the 300m and failed to respond to his riding from that point and in his opinion was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of ABOVE US revealed the gelding to have a slower than normal post-race recovery. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for ABOVE US prior to it racing again.
Race 3: SKYRACING TV MAIDEN H’CAP - 1500m
1st – Good Hunting 2nd – Tale Of Harmony 3rd – Only One Annie 4th – Knights
KNIGHTS (R. Mason) was slow to begin.
MUST BE THE ONE (D. Tanti) knuckled at the start, shifted out and hampered PURRFECTLYFEARLESS (A. Pattillo) and CARDS ‘N’ OWLS (A. Allen).
BEER WITH FRIENDS (G. Cooksley) blundered at the start and lost ground.
Approaching the 900m PURRFECTLYFEARLESS commenced to overrace and shifted out to avoid the heels of MUST BE THE ONE, resulting in CARDS ‘N’ OWLS being forced wider on the track. PURRFECTLYFEARLESS and CARDS ‘N’ OWLS raced wide for the remainder of the event.
After passing the 600m KNIGHTS, when overracing, shifted out and became awkward at the heels of BEER WITH FRIENDS.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice T. Harrison regarding the performance of THORN MAN. Apprentice Harrison stated that THORN MAN was unable to muster any early speed, which resulted in the gelding settling further back than anticipated. She added that it was her intention to improve her position from the 600m, however she was unable to do so when she was disappointed for clear running between MUST BE THE ONE and BRILLIANT DRAGON (K. Wharton). She further stated that THORN MAN, once able to get clear approaching the 300m, ran on fairly and in her opinion was not entirely disappointing. Trainer R.Heathcote advise that THORN MAN will now be stepped up in distance for future starts.
Race 4: YELLOWGLEN CLASS 5 H’CAP - 1500m
1st – Dienekes 2nd – Bellavonane 3rd – Piccali 4th – Slipstreams
VIVAHEART (A. Hearn) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from M. Hellyer and trainer L. Treloar regarding the riding tactics adopted on RUGGED RANGES, which settled at the rear of the field which is in contrast to its most recent start when it led. M. Hellyer explained that it was his intention to settle in a forward position but RUGGED RANGES began very awkwardly and lost ground and when the tempo of the race was fast in the early stages, in order to comply with these instructions he would have had to unnecessarily pressure RUGGED RANGES. Trainer L. Treloar confirmed these instructions, but after viewing the patrol film of the start agreed that M. Hellyer had little option after losing ground than to settle at the rear of the field. Mr Treloar further added that in future starts it would be his instructions to attempt to settle in a forward position if possible.
T. Bell, the rider of THE MIDDLEWEIGHT, which performed below expectations, explained that the gelding was unable to muster the necessary speed to take up a forward position in the early stages, which was his intention, and was under pressure from the 800m. He added that in his opinion THE MIDDLEWEIGHT is best suited on rain-affected tracks. A post-race veterinary examination of THE MIDDLEWEIGHT revealed no abnormalities.
Race 5: TIMEFORM CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1600m
1st – Cross The Star 2nd – Rains 3rd – Spring Rose 4th – Miss Smoke
As R. Wiggins was to be overweight and A. Pattillo had been stood down by the Club doctor, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. R. Wiggins was fined $200.
Approaching the 1200m SPRING ROSE (T. Bell) had to be steadied from the heels of EMPEROR (T. Treichel), which shifted in when not fully clear. T. Treichel was advised to provide greater clearance to his fellow riders in the future.
Passing the 1200m when the pace steadied, RAINS (S. Galloway) commenced to overrace and shifted out and had to be restrained from the heels of HIGHER’N’HIGHER (G. Cooksley). As a result, GENIUS MASTER (C. Whiteley) was forced wider on the track. GENIUS MASTER raced wide from this point.
TONZATICKA (A. Allen) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the home turn EMPEROR was held up for clear running when awkwardly placed at the heels of CARVED IN STONE (C. Munce).
Near the 450m EMPEROR improved to the inside of CARVED IN STONE where there was doubtful room and as a result made heavy contact with the hind quarters of CARVED IN STONE, which became unbalanced. Soon after this EMPEROR obtained a run to the inside of CARVED IN STONE and shifted in and made contact with the running rail. T. Treichel (EMPEROR) was advised to ensure he has sufficient room to improve in the future. T. Treichel reported that after obtaining clear running near the 350m EMPEROR did not quicken as expected under his riding and worked to the line only fairly.
SPRING ROSE was unable to secure clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Apprentice A. Allen reported that TONZATICKA hung out for a major part of the race and he was not comfortable with the horse’s action in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of TONZATICKA revealed the gelding to be lame in both forelegs. Trainer B. Thornton was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for TONZATICKA before it races again.
Stewards questioned C. Munce regarding the riding tactics adopted on CARVED IN STONE, which was ridden to the lead today, which is in contrast to its normal racing pattern. C. Munce explained that he had no specific instructions and he was of the view that the racing pattern today suited horses racing on the pace and after beginning well he allowed the horse to stride forward to obtain the lead near the 1200m. C. Munce added that CARVED IN STONE became unbalanced when bumped on the hind quarters rounding the home turn and did not respond to his riding from that point. He further added that in his opinion CARVED IN STONE would be better suited to racing over a shorter distance than that of today’s event.
EMPEROR lost its near fore plate in running.
Race 6: HIDDEN DRAGON @ LYNDHURST C,G&E CLASS 3 PLATE - 1200m
1st – Signpost 2nd – San Jose 3rd – Bribie 4th – Turenne
Connections advised that from the wide barrier JAVELENTIA (A. Hearn) would be ridden back in the field.
Correct weight was delayed to enable E. Wilkinson, the rider of 5th placegetter TALLYHO, to view the stewards’ patrol footage of the start to determine whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against a placed runner. After viewing the film, E. Wilkinson indicated that he did not wish to lodge an objection and correct weight was declared.
SAN JOSE (R. Hurdle) jumped awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hind quarters of TURENNE (D. Griffin).
EASY SUCCESSFUL (T. Harrison) jumped awkwardly and shifted out abruptly resulting in SIGNPOST (Michael Palmer) having to be checked when tightened for room between EASY SUCCESSFUL and JAVELENTIA. In this incident SIGNPOST struck the heels of EASY SUCCESSFUL and blundered. Following this EASY SUCCESSFUL, when being corrected by its rider, shifted in abruptly and made contact with BLAISINGJAD (S. Galloway) which was taken in across the running of TALLYHO (E. Wilkinson), which had to be checked. Stewards were satisfied that apprentice Harrison had made every endeavour to straighten her mount in this incident and took no direct action.
Near the 1000m EASY SUCCESSFUL shifted in away from BRIBIE (R. Wiggins) and made contact with BLAISINGJAD which resulted in TRIUMPHANT CHOICE (C. Maund) having to be checked when tightened for room between BLAISINGJAD and PERFECT PUZZLE (J. Lloyd), which shifted out slightly. Trainer B. Guy was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of EASY SUCCESSFUL.
Passing the 1000m TALLYHO had to be checked to avoid the heels of JAVELENTIA, which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. At a subsequent inquiry it was established that apprentice Hearn (JAVELENTIA) had directed his mount on an acute angle prior to this and he had difficulty correcting his mount as his saddle had slipped forward. In the circumstances apprentice Hearn was issued with a severe reprimand and advised that although he was placed in difficulties with his saddle slipping, he should have shown greater care when shifting ground.
After passing the 600m A. Hearn (JAVELENTIA), who was having difficulty due to the saddle shifting forward soon after the start, shifted out to avoid the heels of TURENNE, resulting in TRIUMPHANT CHOICE being taken wider on the track.
Approaching the 300m SIGNPOST was disappointed for a run between WISE COMMANDER (C. Munce) and DENMARK HILL (J. Hoopert). SIGNPOST then had to alter course to the outside of DENMARK HILL in order to improve.
BRIBIE shifted out under pressure over the final 100m.
A. Hearn, the rider of JAVELENTIA, reported that the saddle shifted forward on his mount soon after the start which placed him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.
Race 7: TICKETEK BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Falvelina 2nd – Huckleberry Dane 3rd – Temple Street 4th – Greyzeel
FUNNY FALVE (A. Allen) raced wide throughout.
After passing the 600m MULTIRE MUSIC (T. Treichel) shifted out under pressure and became awkward and had to be steadied from the heels of AMBER ALE (T. Bell).
A. Taylor, the rider of FINAL CRUNCH, was reminded of her obligations to at all times rider her mounts out to the end of the race.
A post-race veterinary examination of AMBER ALE (T. Bell), which weakened badly in the home straight, revealed the horse to have pulled up distressed and to be exhibiting mucous from the nearside nostril. Trainer M. Nolan was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to AMBER ALE racing again.
