Supplementary Report

From SCTC, 9.9.12 – Race 7

Trainer R. Lipp advised that TEIFI VALLEY had pulled up well following the event. He was of the view that the gelding was required to work in the early stages to obtain a position and combined with the fact that it was having its first start over 1400m may explain why the gelding failed to finish the race off as expected.

From Doomben, 5.9.12 – Race 1

Trainer R. Heathcote subsequently advised stewards that following further veterinary examinations of SASSY MISS revealed the filly to have had a recurring injury to its off side knee and will be sent for an immediate spell.

From Doomben, 8.9.12 – Race 2

Trainer J. Hanna advised stewards that following the disappointing performance of AROUND THE WORLD blood samples were taken which failed to identify any significant issues and he therefore has decided to continue with its preparation as well as looking to step the horse down in grade in upcoming starts.

Race 1: XXXX Gold Maiden Plate – 2225m
1st – Ruthless Babe 2nd – Only One Annie 3rd – Knights 4th - Newstart

AL JAAMIH (R. Hurdle) shifted out at the start and made contact with BEER WITH FRIENDS (L. Cheshire).

NEWSTART (D. Green) jumped away awkwardly.

Approaching and passing the 600m, DIAVEL (M. Cahill) shifted out around the heels of ONLY ONE ANNIE (J. Taylor) in order to improve and bumped AL JAAMIH on a number of occasions.

Near the 450m, NEWSTART had to be steadied from the heels of BEER WITH FRIENDS when that runner commenced to weaken.

R. Mason, rider of KNIGHTS, was fined $100 for using her whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

Stewards sought an explanation from rider D. Green and trainer Mr L. Van Der Sluys regarding the riding tactics adopted on NEWSTART, which settled at the rear of the field which was in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. D. Green stated that he was instructed to ride the horse in a handy position with cover if possible however NEWSTART was fractious in the barriers and began awkwardly and rather than ride aggressively and be caught wide in the early stages he elected to restrain to the rear of the field and gain a position closer to the rail. Trainer L. Van Der Sluys confirmed the instructions and, in the circumstances, the explanation given by both parties was accepted.

Race 2: Bundaberg Distilling Co Benchmark 85 H'cap - 1000m
1st – General Secretary 2nd – Pointe Dancer 3rd – Olympia’s Flame 4th – Devil’s Melody

M. Cahill was dislodged from GENERAL SECRETARY during the preliminary. GENERAL SECRETARY was then examined by the veterinary surgeon at the barriers and cleared to race.

NICKIERA (J. Byrne) hung out in the early and middle stages.

Stewards sought an explanation from J. Lloyd, rider of NEWBORN, as to his reason for electing to improve his position from the rear of the field at the 600m around NICKIERA. He stated that from the wide barrier he elected to restrain in the early stages and when the pace steadied approaching the 600m he was of the opinion that the race would develop into a sprint home and felt it would be more advantageous to be closer to the leaders. J. Lloyd added that over the final 100m NEWBORN did not feel comfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination of NEWBORN failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Trainer B. Baker was questioned regarding the improved performance of GENERAL SECRETARY today. Mr Baker stated that GENERAL SECRETARY had suffered from feet problems throughout its career, which resulted in the mare having to have an 8-month spell from racing prior to its most recent start. Mr Baker added that he was satisfied with the mare’s first up effort from a spell and indicated that the fitness of GENERAL SECRETARY had improved since that performance.

TALLAI GOLD then made heavy contact with SHARMA, taking that runner out on to the hind quarters of CHOOSE GREATNESS (J. Taylor). D. Griffin reported that after meeting with this interference the filly was immediately under pressure and did not finish the race off and, in his view, this incident was a major contributing factor to this incident. Stewards advised R. Wiggins rider of SIRRUSH, to exercise more care when shifting out to improve in future. D. Griffin, rider of TALLAI GOLD, reported that following this interference the filly was immediately under pressure. D. SOUTHERN OBSESSION continued to hang out and near the 600m shifted out and inconvenienced WONDERFUL JESTER (M. Cahill), which resulted in WONDERFUL JESTER having to alter course and improve to that runner’s inside. Trainer M.
