Supplementary Report

Stewards opened an inquiry into the use of, what appeared to be a modified vest by apprentice R. Hurdle. The inquiry was adjourned to enable stewards to make further inquiries.

Race 1: Sky Racing Benchmark 80 H'cap - 2200m
1st – Handsome 2nd – Mukaddamah 3rd – Sir Stanley 4th – Dodging Eddie

Connections advised that SIR STANLEY would race in a more forward position if circumstances permit. SIR STANLEY was ridden accordingly.

I GOT ONE (A. Holt) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 1400m, I GOT ONE, which was overracing, shifted out and raced wide for some distance thereafter.

DODGING EDDIE (K. Matheson) raced wide in the early stages.

When questioned regarding the performance of DODGING EDDIE, K. Matheson stated that from the wide barrier he was instructed to take up a forward position, and that he attempted to ride the gelding forward in the early stages, however DODGING EDDIE failed to muster the necessary speed and as a result he was obliged to race 3 wide for that part of the race. He added that he then elected to improve forward to take up a position one off the fence. Apprentice Matheson was of the view that this had an effect on the gelding’s ability to finish the race off as expected. The explanation was noted.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on DAAD’S OVERTIME in the middle stages of the race, jockey A. Pattillo stated that the horse had performed well when adopting similar tactics in the past. He added that he was reluctant to restrain DAAD’S OVERTIME in the middle stages as it had shown a tendency to resent being restrained at its previous runs. The explanation was noted.

Race 2: XXXX Gold Benchmark 80 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Little Brown Horse 2nd – Harada Bay 3rd – Ausworld 4th – Beeby Gem

LITTLE BROWN HORSE (A. Holt), which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly.

K. Matheson, rider of HARADA BAY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1200m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of HOOTILLA (L. Morrison), which resulted in that horse being tightened for room and L. Morrison having to take hold of HOOTILLA and lose ground. K. Matheson was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 19 January and to expire at midnight, 30 January.

Near the 600m, MR SLICK (J. Johnson) improved onto the heels of AUSWORLD (B. Swaffer) and had to be steadied.

Passing the 400m, LITTLE BROWN HORSE shifted out to improve and bumped HOOTILLA (L. Morrison).

Jockey M. Hellyer reported that he was instructed to lead on BEEBY GEM, however when KLITSCHKO (S. Sheargold) took up a position to his outside approaching the 800m, BEEBY GEM began to race strongly, and despite his efforts he was unable to restrain the mare in the middle stages. Jockey Hellyer was of the view that this had a detrimental effect on the ability of BEEBY GEM to finish the race off.

When questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on MONTE BELLA, particularly rounding the home turn where there appeared an opportunity to shift to the outside of HOOTILLA and obtain clear running, J. Stanley stated that he was instructed to obtain a position when cover. He added that rounding the home turn he elected to shift back to the inside of HOOTILLA in an effort to save ground and as a result was held up for clear running for a short distance before shifting to the outside to obtain clear running near the 250m. J. Stanley added that once able to obtain clear running, MONTE BELLA only finished the race off fairly and had a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages. Trainer J. Meagher confirmed the instructions as he was of the view that MONTE BELLA, which was returning from a spell, performs better over further distances and as a result would be unable to settle in a forward position due to the early speed in the race. He added that in hindsight MONTE BELLA would have been better suited taking up a position closer to the speed. Mr Meagher did not believe that the tactics adopted by jockey Stanley had a detrimental effect on the horse’s chances and overall was disappointed in the mare’s performance. He indicated that he would attempt to step MONTE BELLA up in distance in which case it would be ridden in a more forward position. Mr Meagher said he would also consider removing the tongue tie from MONTE BELLA as he felt it may have resented the tongue tie today. Stewards noted the explanations of jockey Standley and Mr Meagher.

Following this race, Kirk Matheson was examined by the doctor and stood down from his remaining engagements. K. Matheson was advised hat he would be required to provide a medical clearance prior to riding again. Riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.
