GENERAL

As apprentice T. Harrison was injured, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: WINNING EDGE PROMOTIONAL GEAR QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1400m

GULLY COMMAND (P. Schmidt) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start MISHANI CENTURION (K. Matheson) shifted in and made heavy contact with NAVELINA (E. Wilkinson).

SO CHEEKY (J. Byrne) overraced in the early stages.

For a considerable distance approaching and passing the 1000m GULLY COMMAND overraced at the heels of MISHANI CENTURION.

NUDE SECRETS (G. Cooksley) raced fiercely approaching the 1000m and after being crossed by OCTANE FLYER (R. McMahon) after leaving the 1000m, shifted out forcing GIVE IT AWAY (M. Cahill) wider. R. McMahon (OCTANE FLYER) was reprimanded for shifting in when not quite clear of NUDE SECRETS. NUDE SECRETS continued to race ungenerously and hang out for the remainder of the event and near the 500m VOODOO BLUE MAGIC (M. Vance) had to be restrained from the heels of that horse. MISHANI CENTURION, which was trailing VOODOO BLUE MAGIC, shifted in slightly of its own accord, struck the heels of VOODOO BLUE MAGIC and blundered badly. As a result, GULLY COMMAND, which was following, had to be checked, along with SO CHEEKY. In this incident OOSTHUIZEN (G. Colless) was also taken wider on the track.

PRINCESS DAT (A. Allen) raced wide without cover throughout.

OOSTHUIZEN raced back in the field three wide.

OUR ZIDANE (T. Bell) raced wide throughout.

E. Wilkinson, the rider of NAVELINA, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of OUR ZIDANE (T. Bell), resulting in OUR ZIDANE having to be checked and alter course to avoid the heels of NAVELINA. E. Wilkinson’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Monday, 1 April, and expire at midnight on Friday, 12 April 2013.

When asked to explain the reasons for his failure to fully test MISHANI CENTURION in the straight, apprentice K. Matheson explained that the horse had blundered badly near the 500m and after it failed to respond when tested in the early part of the straight, he did not continue to pressure the horse as he became concerned that it may have injured itself during that incident. Stewards accepted his explanation. A post-race veterinary examination of MISHANI CENTURION revealed no abnormalities.

When asked to explain the tactics adopted on NUDE SECRETS today, which appeared to be in contrast with those adopted at the Gold Coast at its most recent start, G. Cooksley explained that it was the intention of connections to have the horse positioned midfield with cover. Jockey Cooksley added that the horse was only fairly away and he was obliged to apply pressure in order to cross runners to his inside. G. Cooksley said that NUDE SECRETS reacted to his riding and commenced to race fiercely and he was unable to restrain it, which resulted in it being positioned in the lead. Jockey Cooksley added that the horse continued to race fiercely despite his attempts to settle it. Trainer G. Duncan confirmed the instructions and informed stewards that it was his intention to send the horse for a spell. Stewards advised Mr Duncan that a warning would be placed on the horse with regard to its racing manners.

The veterinary surgeon reported that VOODOO BLUE MAGIC had been galloped on on the near hind leg.

Race 2: WINNING EDGE TROPHIES OPEN H’CAP - 2118m

Connections advised that ZA MAGIC (E. Wilkinson) would be ridden just off the speed but if there is no pace in the race it will attempt to lead. ZA MAGIC pulled hard in the early stages and led.

SAM’S TOWN laid in under pressure approaching the 200m, tightening the running of OUR BARNEY.

T. Bell reported that MR LIGHT BLUE was held up rounding the home turn and then was disappointed for a run between ZA MAGIC and OUR BARNEY (R. Wiggins) near the 300m and had to be checked when OUR BARNEY was taken in slightly by SAM’S TOWN (G. Colless). T. Bell added that once he found clear running near the 200m the gelding ran home well.

R. Wiggins was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on OUR BARNEY. He stated that he was instructed to lead at all costs and when joined by ZA MAGIC near the 1800m continued to press forward, however after leaving the 1400m he was able to settle the gelding and shifted to the outside of ZA MAGIC.

Race 3: WINNING EDGE AWARDS & DESIGNS C,G&E CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m

Trainer R. Heathcote advised that with the blinkers being added to CAPTAIN CLAYTON (P. Schmidt), the intention will be to have the horse ridden in a mid-forward position. The horse was ridden forward and raced 5 wide in the early and middle stages until gaining a position 3 wide near the 600m.

TIME TO PLUNDER (M. Cahill) was slow to begin.

NICKIERA (A. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly.

NOOGOORA BURR (J. Byrne) was held up in the early stages of the straight and did not obtain clear running until approaching the 200m where it shifted out and made contact with the tiring CAPTAIN CLAYTON.

When asked for an opinion on the performance of THE WHITE HOPE today, G. Colless stated that the gelding began well, as is customary, and he was able to quickly take the lead. He added that during the middle stages the horse was somewhat pressured by DIET (P. Hammersley), to his outside, however it travelled well and he felt that it was only in the latter stages of the race that the horse’s fitness gave out by virtue of it being first up for a considerable period of time. Trainer M. Dunn agreed with jockey Colless’s assessment, informing stewards that he was satisfied with the horse’s performance and he believed that THE WHITE HOPE would take benefit from today’s race.

After the running of this race the track was upgraded to GOOD 3 retrospective.

Race 4: WINNING EDGE MERCHANDISE F&M CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m

BLACK MAGIC (R. Wiggins) jumped awkwardly, shifted out shortly after the start and made contact with OFF AND LAUGHING (M. Cahill) and blundered.

FLYING JET (L. Cassidy) knuckled on jumping.

OFF AND LAUGHING raced three wide without cover throughout.

MARCULOO (P. Hammersley) raced wide throughout.

FLINDERS CITY (K. Matheson) raced ungenerously in the middle stages.

Near the 600m BLACK MAGIC shifted out, taking MARCULOO wider.

BELLANTINA (B. Stewart) was held up for clear running until the 300m.

PRODUCT (T. Bell) was held up from the entrance to the straight until approaching the 200m.

L. Cassidy reported that the performance of FLYING JET was good given the slow pace of the race in the early stages and the impost of 59 kg.

Apprentice P. Schmidt was questioned regarding the performance of GATINEAU RIVER. She stated that the mare travelled well in the early stages, with an easy lead, however was under pressure shortly after entering the straight and did not respond to her riding. Trainer R. Lipp informed stewards that he was not dissatisfied with the mare’s performance today as he felt the section of the track on which the mare raced was inferior to that wider on the racing surface. A post-race veterinary examination of GATINEAU RIVER revealed the mare to have a slow post-race recovery rate.

The veterinary surgeon reported that GALLINARI (G. Cooksley) sustained a laceration to the near fore cannon.

Race 5: WINNING EDGE CORPORATE AWARDS 2MW H’CAP - 1000m

The start of this race was delayed when the tongue tie on TRAIL BOSS (K. Matheson) was replaced at the barriers.

A post-race veterinary examination of DOUBLE IMAGE (L. Cassidy) failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer L. Kelly was advised that a veterinary clearance for DOUBLE IMAGE will be required prior to the horse’s next start.

Race 6: THE WINNING EDGE SIGNATURE 0MW H’CAP - 1400m

DIENEKES (P. Schmidt) and BORDER FLIGHT (A. Allen) came together on jumping.

LITTLE BROWN HORSE (D. Browne) was held up for clear running from the entrance to the straight until near the 200m.

KING LUDWIG (R. McMahon) was held up in the early stages of the straight.

When asked to explain the poor performance of FULL BLAST, jockey R. Wiggins was unable to offer any tangible explanation, advising stewards that the horse enjoyed a nice run in transit just behind the speed but was under pressure approaching the home turn and failed to respond to his riding thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination of FULL BLAST revealed no abnormalities and a swab sample was taken. Trainer D. Smith will be interviewed regarding this matter.

Race 7: WINNING EDGE PRESENTATIONS BRIBIE H’CAP - 1200m

The start of this race was delayed when THEFT (G. Cooksley) was reluctant to proceed to the barriers.

Connections advised that from the wide barrier it would be the intention to have MR FAVULOUS (K. Matheson) ridden with cover. MR FAVULOUS raced extremely wide without cover in the early stages.

THE JACKAL (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

ALLTHERIGHTMOVES (J. Morris) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of STEEL ZIP (B. Stewart). STEEL ZIP then shifted in resulting in ALLTHERIGHTMOVES having to be checked.

Near the 1000m ADEBISI (R. Wiggins) shifted in and made contact with the hind quarters of THEFT. Both horses then became unbalanced and came into contact once again, resulting in ADEBISI being taken out towards the heels of THE SIXTIES (M. Hellyer), and had to be steadied.

THEFT overraced at the heels of THE SIXTIES in the middle stages.

HAIZUM (P. Hammersley) overraced at the heels of THEFT for some distance approaching and passing the 500m.

STEEL ZIP was held up from the entrance to the straight until the 200m and then approaching the 100m shifted out further and brushed BORDER REBEL (T. Bell).

Leaving the 300m TOO MANY REDS (L. Cassidy) was disappointed for a run between ADEBISI and THEFT, which shifted out when tiring. TOO MANY REDS was then held up and unable to improve until the 150m.

R. McMahon, the rider of SIGNIFIED, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of THEFT, resulting in THEFT being taken out on to ADEBISI, which resulted in those two runners being crowded between SIGNIFIED and TIERQUALO (D. Browne) and being checked. R. McMahon’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 6 April, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 17 April 2013

The veterinary surgeon reported that ADEBISI sustained a deep laceration over the off fore lateral sesamoid. Trainer D. Forster advised that ADEBISI would now be sent for a spell.

Race 8: WINNINGEDGE.NET.AU QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1500m

Stewards permitted J. Taylor to replace apprentice T. Harrison as the rider of OFFENSE when no apprentice was available.

Correct weight was delayed to afford M. Cahill, the rider of 3rd placegetter TRAKSTAR, the opportunity of viewing the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner LITTLE LONG HORN (J. Byrne). After viewing the video, M. Cahill indicated that he did not wish to proceed with an objection and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.

SIR KNOX (M. Hellyer) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with RING ME RUBY (K. Matheson).

ON THE DECK (P. Hammersley) was slow to begin.

Apprentice K. Matheson, the rider of RING ME RUBY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 1200m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of TRAKSTAR (M. Cahill), taking that horse in on to SIR KNOX, resulting in SIR KNOX having to be checked when tightened for room between TRAKSTAR and the running rail. ON THE DECK and SPARKLING SOUND (P. Schmidt), which were following, were both inconvenienced in this incident. Apprentice Matheson’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 6 April, and expire at midnight on Friday, 19 April 2013. Stewards ordered that as a condition of the suspension apprentice Matheson undertake two sessions of tutelage with Apprentice Liaison Officer Mr S. Scriven prior to resuming riding.

At the 1200m HOLY TOLEDO (G. Goold) raced ungenerously at the heels of CONGO (G. Colless) and had to be checked.

ITCHINTOWIN (C. Whiteley) raced ungenerously approaching the 1200m and had to be steadied away from the heels of HYPOTHESIS (R. Wiggins), which shifted in. R. Wiggins was advised to be fully clear when shifting ground.

CATALONIA (A. Allen) raced wide in the early stages.

PLAY LUCK (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.

Near the 400m FIESTY BELLE (T. Bell) shifted out from behind the heels of HYPOTHESIS and made contact with OFFENSE (J. Taylor).

Near the 300m ON THE DECK had to be steadied off the heels of PLAY LUCK.

Near the 200m SIR KNOX was momentarily disappointed for a run to the inside of KENTAUR (P. Holmes).

RING ME RUBY was held up for clear running until approaching the 100m.

SPARKLING SOUND and CATALONIA both had difficulty obtaining clear running over the final 100m.

Inside the 100m SIR KNOX was briefly tightened for room to the inside of KENTAUR which shifted in.

CATALONIA lost its off hind plate in running.
