GENERAL
Following track downgrades to SLOW 7 and HEAVY 8, stewards acceded to requests by trainers to scratch the following horses:
Race 4. PREACHER BOY (12.58 pm)
Race 5. HONORIUS and TRAKSTAR (1.34 pm)
Race 8. SEA TRYST (1.34 pm), ROCKER (1.50 pm), QUARTERLY (2.48 pm), BRIBIE (2.56 pm)
Race 1: ASCEND SALES BRC DASH - 1000m
HALLE ROCKS (J. Cassidy), which slipped prior to entering the enclosure, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.
GUNDY SON (M. Rodd) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
T. Bell, the rider of CELTIC DANCER, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in shortly after the start when not sufficiently clear of HALLE ROCKS, resulting in that runner having to be steadied.
I'M COOL (A. Allen) and SILVER BULLION (R. Wiggins) raced three wide throughout.
HAIZUM (J. Byrne) raced ungenerously in the middle stages when awkwardly placed at the heels of CELTIC DANCER (T. Bell)
Approaching the 400m HALLE ROCKS was inconvenienced when tightened for room between I'M COOL and HAIZUM, which shifted out. As a result of this, HALLE ROCKS shifted out, taking SILVER BULLION out on to the hind quarters of BAQABA (G. Goold). This resulted in BAQABA becoming unbalanced.
GRIFFON (D. Browne) was held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn.
GUNDY SON was held up for clear running in the home straight until near the 250m where that runner had to alter course to the outside of SILVER BULLION in order to improve.
Over the final 100m GRIFFON was unable to secure clear running and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider.
A post-race veterinary examination of HALLE ROCKS revealed no significant findings.
Race 2: BOLLINGER CHAMPAGNE CLASSIC - 1200m
Following rain showers, the track was downgraded to DEAD 4 at 12.30 pm.
HOOKED (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin and then soon after the start knuckled when racing tight between MISS SUNSET (P. Robl) and TINTS (T. Bell).
ARCHITECT (J. Byrne) jumped awkwardly, shifted in and bumped VILANOVA (H. Bowman).
Near the 1000m BOUND FOR EARTH (D. Browne) and MISS SUNSET bumped.
ARCHITECT overraced in the early stages.
Passing the 700m OCTANE FLYER (R. McMahon) improved on to the heels of ARCHITECT and had to be restrained by its rider.
VO HEART (E. Wilkinson), INTO THE RED (C. Munce) and TINTS raced wide throughout.
Near the 500m ARCHITECT shifted out and bumped INTO THE RED, which was taken out on to TINTS.
M. Rodd, the rider of GOTH GIRL, reported that the horse carried its head quite low and was inclined to lay in in the early part of the straight, giving him the indication that it was not handling the prevailing track conditions. M. Rodd said he was able to place the horse under full pressure inside the final 200m, however it did not quicken in the going.
Stewards sought an explanation from trainer J. O'Shea with respect to the tactics adopted on BOUND FOR EARTH, which appeared to be in contrast to those employed when it won at its first start in a race. Mr O'Shea explained that the horse settled in a forward position from a good alley on that occasion without being pressured by its rider. He added that today his instructions were consistent with those issued on that occasion that the filly be ridden with cover. His explanation was accepted.
Following the running of this race the track was further downgraded to SLOW 7 retrospective.
Race 3: ALLIANCE AIRLINES F&M H’CAP - 1400m
The start of this race was delayed when PRETTY GULLY (B. Stewart), which shifted a plate during its preliminary, required farrier attention on arrival at the barriers.
PRODUCT (P. Robl), ALANCIA (R. McMahon) and FLYING JET (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
G. Colless reported that SHOW AFFECTION travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages, but when placed under pressure in the home straight did not quicken and in his opinion was not suited to today's track conditions.
Race 4: CHANNEL SEVEN BENCHMARK 85 H’CAP - 1600m
BLACK CASH (D. Browne) shifted out at the start and bumped LESS IS MORE (P. Robl).
RAEBURN (A. Butler) was hampered soon after the start when tightened for room between BLACK CASH and VEETEN (C. Munce), which was taken out by VACALLO (B. Stewart), which was also taken out by STEEP (R. Wiggins).
For some distance approaching and passing the 1100m VACALLO, which was overracing, bumped with BLACK CASH.
WATERFORD (L. Innes), VEETEN and DANAGAZE (G. Goold) raced three wide throughout.
RAEBURN was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 300m.
VACALLO was galloped on on the near hind leg.
B. Stewart (VACALLO) was fined $200 for using his whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
Race 5: MITTYS ROUGH HABIT PLATE - 2100m
TONOPAH (P. Robl) was slow to begin.
SURVIVED (J. Riddell) was hampered soon after the start when tightened for room between NEW SPUR (T. Bell) and STUBOY (M. Cahill), which shifted in away from USAINITY (H. Bowman).
Near the 350m SURVIVED shifted to the outside of USAINITY, inconveniencing TONOPAH.
Stewards questioned J. Riddell in regards to his riding of SURVIVED rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, in particular the reasons he did not progress from a trailing position behind USAINITY around that runner rather than committing to a run to that horse's inside which resulted in him being momentarily held up and obliged to alter course quite suddenly near the 300m to obtain clear running. J. Riddell stated that he was confident a run would come to the inside of USAINITY between STUBOY and HEATER (C. Munce), however when that run did not eventuate he was forced to alter course to the outside of USAINITY near the 300m, coming into contact with TONOPAH. Trainer J. Bary stated that he was satisfied with the decision of jockey Riddell to remain to the inside of other runners as the horse is still inexperienced and has shown in recent starts that it has a tendency to shift its ground when brought to the outside to make its final run. After considering the explanation provided by jockey Riddell, stewards informed him that in their view he had erred by not maintaining a position that allowed him to progress to the outside of USAINITY in the home straight, thus affording his mount clear running upon straightening. Stewards did not feel, however, that his actions were to the extent that would bring his riding within the purview of the rules.
Following the running of this event the track was further downgraded to HEAVY 8.
Race 6: LANDFILL LOGISTICS PTY LTD CHAIRMAN'S H’CAP - 2100m
The start of this race was delayed when CARRICK (L. Innes), which became fractious in the barriers, was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
I GOTTA FEELING (C. Munce) was crowded for room at the start between GOLD CAPE (M. Hellyer) and DAZZLE US (T. Harrison), which shifted in.
After passing the winning post on the first occasion GOLD CAPE (M. Hellyer) had to be steadied when tightened for room by MARGINS (T. Bell), which shifted in.
QUINTESSENTIAL (D. Browne) raced wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to obtain the position outside of the leader near the 1600m.
DAZZLE US and CARRICK raced three wide throughout.
Near the 700m MARGINS shifted out around heels and made contact with SHENZHOU STEEDS (E. Wilkinson).
Near the 600m POSTE RESTANTE (M. Cahill) had to be steadied when tightened for room by SYSMO (G. Colless), which was taken in by MARGINS, which was also dictated in by SHENZHOU STEEDS, which was taken in slightly by DAZZLE US. Apprentice T. Harrison (DAZZLE US) was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
After passing the 200m MARGINS had to be eased when tightened for room between DAZZLE US and ROTHERA (R. McMahon), which shifted out to improve. R. McMahon was reprimanded.
Trainer B. Smith advised stewards that DOLLY DOLLY (R. Wiggins) would now be sent for a spell.
A post-race veterinary examination of MARGINS revealed no abnormalities.
Following the running of this event the track was further downgraded to HEAVY 9 retrospective.
Race 7: BUNDABERG DISTILLING CO. BTC CUP - 1200m
JETSET LAD (J. Riddell) was slow to begin.
Near the 500m RAREFIED (M. Rodd) had to be eased when tightened for room between SPIRIT OF BOOM (M. Cahill) and EMMALENE (C. Munce), which shifted out.
P. Robl, the rider of YOUR SONG, was fined $300 for making a celebratory gesture prior to passing the winning post. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account jockey Robl's exemplary record in regard to this rule over a long period.
M. Rodd reported that after travelling 200m RAREFIED failed to handle the prevailing track conditions and never travelled at any stage throughout the event, and that he could offer no other explanation for the horse's performance.
J. Cassidy reported that SEA SIREN did not handle the prevailing track conditions today. A post-race veterinary examination of SEA SIREN revealed no significant findings.
G. Colless reported that TEMPLE OF BOOM was under pressure after passing the 1000m and never travelled comfortably for the remainder of the race. A post-race veterinary examination of TEMPLE OF BOOM revealed the horse to have a case of the thumps.
D. Browne reported that BUFFERING began very awkwardly and lost ground, was unable to muster its customary early speed on the wet track and did not travel as strongly as it usually does in the run.
Race 8: TICKETEK CLASS 6 PLATE - 1200m
HEZA JETSETTER (R. Wiggins) began awkwardly and lost ground.
DREAM'N'IGNITE (H. Bowman) jumped awkwardly and shifted out, coming into contact with MISHANI WARRIOR (J. Byrne).
Near the 1000m MAURY (T. Harrison) raced fiercely at the heels of DREAM'N'IGNITE and had to be restrained.
SOMEDAY (C. Munce) and DOUBLE IMPACT (E. Wilkinson) raced wide throughout.
SOMEDAY laid in under pressure in the home straight and over the concluding stages brushed DOUBTFILLY (A. Allen).
H. Bowman reported that DREAM'N'IGNITE did not handle today's track conditions. Trainer D. Forster reported to stewards in days following the event that the mare had pulled up with no abnormalities, and would continue on with current preperation.
T. Bell reported that SOOKIE failed to handle today's track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of SOOKIE revealed no abnormalities.
DREAM'N'IGNITE lost its off hind plate in running.
