Race 1: CARLTON MID CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m

MISS ORIELLE (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin.

BRIBIE (D. Browne) shifted out under pressure in the home straight.

SPATHA (M. Cahill) lost its near hind plate in running.

Race 2: A.M. GILES & CO. CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS BENCHMARK 85 H’CAP - 1400m

DALZAR (P. Schmidt) and AMETSIS (M. Cahill) both raced wide throughout.

M. Cahill, the rider of AMETSIS, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out, resulting in VIKING HEART (R. McMahon) having to be checked. M. Cahill's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday 29 June and expire at midnight on Tuesday 9 July 2013.

Apprentice P. Schmidt reported that the saddle on DALZAR slipped forward at the 900m when the gelding was overracing, however moved back into position near the 300m when DALZAR was placed under full pressure.

R. Wiggins reported that near the 1000m COSMONAUT was struck in the head by a large clod and raced with its head in the air for a short distance thereafter.

A post-race veterinary examination of AMETSIS revealed no significant findings.

Race 3: HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLERS QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1200m

LITTLE LONG HORN (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with BEACH BABE (G. Colless).

Near the 1000m BEACH BABE shifted in slightly, resulting in LITTLE LONG HORN, which had established running to the inside of BEACH BABE, being taken in on to YO FERDINAND (T. Bell), which had to be steadied. In the circumstances, both J. Byrne and G. Colless were reminded of their obligations to ensure their fellow riders are provided with sufficient racing room.

AVALADYLUCK (R. McMahon) raced wide throughout.

Passing the 400m GENERAL EXHIBIT (L. Cassidy) shifted out around the heels of THE STOREMAN (P. Schmidt) to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with NARCISSUS (D. Browne) on several occasions.

Approaching the 300m YO FERDINAND was disappointed for a run between LITTLE LONG HORN and DISCREET when that horse shifted out to obtain clear running. As a result of this incident, YO FERDINAND was obliged to steady and shift out around the heels of LITTLE LONG HORN.

DISCREET (K. Matheson) shifted out to obtain clear running inside the 300m and came in contact with LITTLE LONG HORN.

L. Cassidy (GENERAL EXHIBIT) reported that the butt of his whip became entangled in his reins in the early part of the straight and that it took several strides to disentangle the whip before putting it to use inside the 200m.

Race 4: BREAKFAST CREEK HOTEL STAKES - 1400m

ENQUARE (J. Stanley), which lost its footing and reared over in its raceday stall, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.

ARCHITECT (A. Spinks) stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost significant ground.

CASINO BENJO (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.

FORWARD SPEED (L. Rolls) was forced to race wide during the early stages.

Both REAL FAVULOUS (D. Browne) and ARCHITECT overraced during the early stages.

ENQUARE raced wide throughout.

CHOISENEGGER, which hung out rounding the home turn, hung in under pressure in the home straight.

Leaving the 250m J. Stanley (ENQUARE) momentarily lost the use of his nearside rein.

Leaving the 200m NICKED AND COURT (R. Wiggins) was disappointed for a run between CANNYZING (R. Jamieson) and ENQUARE when ENQUARE shifted in. NICKED AND COURT also had a tendency to lay in at this point.

When tested with the whip, OCTANE FLYER (T. Bell) shifted in under pressure near the 150m and had to be corrected by its rider.

A. Spinks reported that ARCHITECT was reluctant to stretch out when racing between runners approaching the home turn. When asked about the overall performance of ARCHITECT, jockey Spinks advised stewards that he felt the 1400m of today's race may have been beyond ARCHITECT, particularly on a soft surface.

Race 5: CENTENARY CLASSIC MERCEDES-BENZ OPEN MILE - 1600m

DOZINTMATERANYWAY (C. Munce) was slow to begin.

Near the 1400m SOFT SAND (J. Byrne), after improving to the inside of FIRE UP FIFI (D. Browne) had to be restrained when tightened for room by FIRE UP FIFI, which shifted in slightly.

Stewards questioned M. Cahill with regard to the tactics he adopted on SOMEDAY. Of particular concern to stewards was the reason he relinquished his position outside the leader to DIADEME (B. Shinn) passing the 1100m which resulted in SOMEDAY being taken back through the field during the middle stages to ultimately be placed towards the rear of the field upon rounding the home turn. Jockey Cahill stated that he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position with cover and after reaching the lead approaching the 1200m he steadied SOMEDAY. M. Cahill added that he believed the ground on the fence to be inferior and leaving the 1200m he allowed CONSERVATORIUM (J. Bowditch) to improve to his inside in order to maintain a one-off position. Jockey Cahill said that when DIADEME progressed to his outside approaching the 1100m he felt that his best option was to take a trailing position behind DIADEME as he was of the view that it would hold a forward spot as its pattern of racing suggests. He added that following this several runners progressed to his outside, resulting in him being unable to move SOMEDAY from a trailing position behind DIADEME. Stewards informed jockey Cahill that the decision to allow DIADEME to cross his running at the 1100m proved to be the wrong decision, but in the circumstances stewards believed it to be a reasonable decision and therefore his riding did not breach any rules of racing. A post-race veterinary examination of SOMEDAY revealed the gelding to have lacerations to the outside heel and cannon of the near hind leg, consistent with being galloped on.

Stewards also sought an explanation from B. Shinn, the rider of DIADEME, as to why he restrained to a position which allowed CONSERVATORIUM to shift to a one-off position to the outside of FIRE UP FIFI when that horse progressed to the lead passing the 1000m. Jockey Shinn said that after settling to the outside of CONSERVATORIUM, FIRE UP FIFI progressed to his outside very quickly and he was concerned that if he allowed his mount to stride forward, bearing in mind that CONSERVATORIUM was holding an advantage on him that CONSERVATORIUM would shift out and place him in a three wide position, therefore he restrained to take a trailing position behind CONSERVATORIUM. His explanation was noted.

Race 6: CARLTON DRAUGHT TATTERSALL'S CUP - 2200m

Connections advised that from the wide barrier it would be the intention to have SHENZHOU STEEDS (E. Wilkinson) ridden back in the field. The horse was ridden accordingly.

GOLD CAPE (M. Hellyer) and VERDANT (L. Cassidy) were slow to begin.

ROTHERA (R. McMahon) raced three wide throughout.

VERDANT, IBICENCO (L. Nolen) and SHENZHOU STEEDS all had difficulty improving their positions approaching the home turn.

Near the 500m VERDANT shifted out, taking ROTHERA wider.

FIBRILLATION (M. Cahill) was momentarily held up on straightening.

Race 7: SKY RACING TATTERSALL'S TIARA - 1400m

J. Bowditch (SKATING ON ICE) was fined $200 for weighing out without irons.

The start of this race was delayed when SKYERUSH (B. Shinn), which dislodged its rider and galloped for a short distance before being recaptured near the 600m and returned to the start, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to race.

PERON (M. Cahill), YOSEI (M. Payne) and RISK AVERSION (C. Munce) were slow to begin.

RED TRACER (N. Rawiller) raced wide without cover.

When asked to explain the seemingly disappointing performance of PERON, M. Cahill stated that the filly did not travel as strongly today as it had at its previous starts, to the extent that he was forced to pressure the horse 600m from the finish. Jockey Cahill felt that the soft surface, together with the week back-up, may have had an impact on the horse's performance.

Race 8: W.J. HEALY STAKES - 1200m

As R. McMahon had been stood down by the Club doctor following his ride in Race 7, T. Bell was substituted as the rider of PETTY CURY.

RIVER LAD (E. Wilkinson) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out taking ROYAL BENDER (M. Payne) out on to GRIFFON (P. Robl), which lost its position.

GUNDY SON (R. Wiggins) blundered on jumping away.

Near the 300m when M. Payne (ROYAL BENDER) went for another hold, her mount came into contact with GUNDY SON, which was shifting out to secure clear running. As a result, both horses became unbalanced.

Near the 200m PETTY CURY raced in restricted room and had to be restrained when weakening, after being tightened for room by BENNY'S BUTTONS (M. Cahill), which shifted in when laying in, and DELAGO BOLT (A. Allen) which shifted out slightly. Apprentice Allen and jockey Cahill were both advised that they must stop riding and straighten their mounts when shifting ground.

DELAGO BOLT (A. Allen) shifted in over the concluding stages and bumped heavily with LIESELE (C. Munce).

G. Colless reported that FUNTANTES began only fairly, did not muster its customary early speed and he believed the horse had come to the end of its preparation.

A post-race veterinary examination of GRIFFON revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer R. Heathcote will be advised that a veterinary clearance for GRIFFON will be required prior to its next start.
