GENERAL

As A. Allen was injured, riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.

Race 1: XXXX Gold Benchmark 80 H'cap - 2200m

BUSINESS DAY (M. Cahill) was slow to begin.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice jockey K. Matheson regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of HOW FAIRDINKUM. Apprentice Matheson informed stewards he was instructed by trainer B. Smith to ride the horse in a rearward position and it travelled well for him during the early and middle stages. He added that when urged forward to improve passing the 800, HOW FAIRDINKUM accelerated well into the race, however when he placed the horse under full pressure rounding the home turn, it failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. Trainer B. Smith could offer no excuse for the poor performance other than to say that the 7-day back up from its last run may have had a bearing on the performance today. Mr Smith undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that came to light in the days following and would provide a veterinary clearance for HOW FAIRDINKUM prior to its next race start. A post race veterinary examination of HOW FAIRDINKUM failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

A post race veterinary examination of FIFTH COLUMN revealed the horse to have a nasal discharge. Trainer G. Betros was advised that a veterinary clearance for FIFTH COLUMN would be required prior to its next race start.

Race 2: Powerade Benchmark 85 H'cap - 1000m

SUSASHI was declared a late scratching at 8.21 pm on veterinary advice.

Connections advised that THEFIFTHHOLE would be ridden back in the field. The horse raced accordingly.

MISSY LONGSTOCKING (A. Holt) shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.

When questioned regarding the performance of ROCKY KING, rider J. Johnson advised that her mount travelled well, however when challenged in the early part of the straight, it commenced to tire and proved very disappointing in the run to the finish. A post race veterinary examination of ROCKY KING revealed a slower than normal post-recovery rate.

Following this race, the track rating was downgraded to Dead 4.

Race 3: Channel Seven 1MW H'cap - 1200m

The start of this race was delayed when BLOW A KISS refused to load. BLOW A KISS was subsequently declared a late scratching at 1.22 pm with the following deductions applicable.

3 cents in the dollar for the Win #5
5 cents in the dollar for place of winner #5
3 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #8
4 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #10

SP bets are subject to deductions.

QFIGHTER (T. Harrison) was slow to begin.

Leaving the 1000m, JOPA (K. Matheson) commenced to overrace and when being restrained got its head up.

YOUTHFUL KING (R. Thompson) and BRIBIE (G. Goold) raced wide for the majority of the race.

Apprentice G. Goold reported BRIBIE (G. Goold) was inclined to hang out throughout the event and failed to respond to his riding and proved extremely disappointing in the run to the finish. A post race veterinary examination of BRIBIE revealed the horse to be exhibiting soreness in the lower neck muscles. Trainer R. Heathcote .....

J. Byrne reported that when placed under pressure in the straight, SWEET AND VICIOUS was reluctant to race inside other runners.

Race 4: GOA Billboards Open H'cap - 1200m

LISTEN SON (L. Cassidy) was a little slow to begin and shifted out, making contact with THE SIXTIES (A. Holt).

A short distance later, LISTEN SON was tightened for room between SIGNIFIED (T. Harrison) and THE SIXTIES, which after being taken in by ADEBISI (G. Goold), continued to shift inwards despite the efforts of its rider.

VINTAGE MOSS (K. Matheson) jumped outwards at the start, tightening METALLURGICAL (R. McMahon).

Approaching the first turn, MISS IMAGICA (L. Tarrant) had a tendency to lay in and near the 1000m shifted in, making contact with SALUTER (J. Byrne).

Nearing the 800m, VINTAGE MOSS improved on to the heels of SIGNIFIED, which was being restrained, and shifted out across that horse's heels and had to be steadied.

When asked for an explanation in respect to the performance of LISTEN SON, L. Cassidy stated that the horse was only fairly away and after suffering crowding a short distance after the start, LISTEN SON did not muster its customary speed and as a result settled towards the rear of the field despite his urgings. He added that the horse travelled only fairly from this point on and whilst LISTEN SON has shown throughout its career that it does not appreciate give in the surface, even in consideration of this the horse's performance was, in his view, disappointing.

Apprentice G. Goold was questioned regarding his tactics on ADEBISI in the middle stages of the race when racing back to the inside of ROCKET TO GLORY (M. Cahill). G. Goold stated he had specific instructions to lead and to endeavour to sprint after leaving the 600m. He added that he was reluctant to allow ROCKET TO GLORY to cross after passing the 800m due to his instructions and continued to hold his position. Apprentice Goold was advised that in the opinion of the stewards he had erred and should have eased and allowed ROCKET TO GLORY to cross him and then race to its outside. Trainer D. Foster advised that ADEBISI would now be given a short let up from racing.

Race 5: Canadian Club NMW H'cap - 1600m

ELUSIVE STORM (T. Bell) and SHOW US A SMILE (K. Matheson) were slow to begin.

Passing the 400m, TAIL AND ALL (D. Browne) shifted out in an endeavour to obtain clear running and made contact with the hind quarters of ELUSIVE STORM. ELUSIVE STORM then maintained its position and as a result TAIL AND ALL was held up for clear running. Again approaching the 200m, TAIL AND ALL attempted to improve however was unable to do so when ELUSIVE STORM again held its racing line to the outside of COURTZ BOY (L. Cassidy). As a result, TAIL AND ALL was unable to obtain clear running until approaching the 100m.

SAMAXAMIA (L. Tarrant) raced 3 wide throughout.

Race 6: Kirks QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1600m

When the pace slackened in the middle stages, ROCK SCENT (R. McMahon) commenced to overrace and hung out, shifting considerably wider on the track rounding the home turn. Trainer K. Schweida was advised that a warning would be placed on ROCK SCENT with respect to its racing manners.

LASCAR (R. Wiggins) was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and approaching the 200m again was impeded for clear running between OAK 'N' ARTHUR and VOODOO BLUE MAGIC (M. Vance), which shifted in.

MOON AND THE STARS (R. Jamieson) raced greenly when placed under pressure in the straight.

OAK 'N' ARTHUR (B. El-Issa) and BROWN WATER (M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout.

Race 7: Goulburn Valley Open H'cap - 1600m

Trainer N. Saunders advised that EQUISSENTIAL would be ridden positive from the barriers to take up a forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

HLUDOWIG (L. Tarrant) was slow to begin (5 lengths). Trainer A. Williamson was advised that a further barrier certificate would be required for HLUDOWIG prior to its next race start.

T. Harrison, rider of EPIC TERRA, was severely reprimanded for allowing her mount to shift in approaching the 1400m when not sufficiently clear of MR LIGHT BLUE (J. Byrne), resulting in that horse having to be steadied to avoid the heels of EPIC TERRA.

MR LIGHT BLUE (J. Byrne), SOMEDAY (A. Holt) and VOLKHERE (R. Wiggins) raced wide throughout.

Race 8: Gallopers $1 Membership Class 6 H'cap - 1400m

Approaching the 1000m, ORTHIE'S GEM (L. Tarrant) had to be steadied when tightened for room between UNO FIVE (V.Colgan) and WHAT ABOUT ME (R. McMahon), which shifted in. R. McMahon, rider of WHAT ABOUT ME, was reprimanded and advised to be fully clear when shifting ground.

Near the 300m, when attempting to take a narrow run between MAGIC IN MOTION (M. Cahill) and SOURCE OF HARMONY (M. Hellyer), VENTURE ON (A. Holt) came into contact with the hind quarters of SOURCE OF HARMONY, resulting in SOURCE OF HARMONY becoming unbalanced.

Trainer P. Barron explained that ABERRANT had only recently come to her stable having campaigned interstate. She said upon arrival the only suitable race for the horse was over a shorter distance in which the horse performed better than she expected. Ms Barron added that since that time the horse has worked well and she had not concerns stepping the horse up to 1400m today. She added that following the disappointing performance today she was unable to put forward any tangible explanation other than in her opinion the horse may have come to the end of a long preparation. Ms Barron stated it was her intention to recommend to connections that the gelding now be spelled. Stewards advised Miss Barron that should she continue the horse's preparation, ABERRANT would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial.
