ESK JOCKEY CLUB STEWARDS REPORT FRI.25.6.99
STEWARDS PANEL: Mr J. Hackett (Chairman), Mr A. Reardon, Mr C. McLune, Mr R. Sanders, Mr D. Hooper (Cadet).
WEATHER – FINE TRACK – SLOW/DEAD AFTER RACE 1
GENERAL: As M. Smith-Lester was indisposed, the following riding replacements were permitted: Race 1. SLEETINA – P. Brown; Race 4. JONADAB – B. Cooper; Race 8. BALLY ME DARLIN’ – P. Brown.
As J. Pollard was indisposed, K. Pope was substituted as the rider of MISTY GLEAM in race 8.
RACE 1: LAKE SOMERSET H’CAP – 1460M.
Trainer S. Simpkins was reprimanded for presenting KARARA BOY without a tongue tie.
MY TUDOR ROSE and CALL TO DANCE were slow to begin.
Approaching the 1200m., CAGULAD shifted out, taking ROSE OF JERICHO and KARARA BOY wider.
After leaving the 1100m., ROSE OF JERICHO had to be steadied off the heels of KARARA BOY, which shifted in. In this incident, ROSE OF JERICHO made heavy contact with the hind quarters of PRINCE BLAZE. L. Cronan, rider of KARARA BOY, was instructed to exercise more care when crossing.
Nearing the 600m., ROSE OF JERICHO had a tendency to hang out.
The track rating was upgraded to dead following race 1.
RACE 2: LAKE WIVENHOE H’CAP – 800M.
FROZEN SOLID jumped awkwardly and lost ground at the start.
FERNANDO, which was slow to begin, hung out badly after the start and continued to do so for some distance. Trainer Mr W. Pie was advised that FERNANDO was declared ineligible to race until the horse trials to the satisfaction of the stewards.
Near the 700m., CHIC DANCER shifted in, momentarily tightening MANDA PANDA.
At the 500m., CHIC DANCER had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room by BELSEEA, which was taken in by JESMOND BRAVE.
Making the home turn, BELSEEA shifted out, tightening JESMOND BRAVE.
RACE 3: VALLEY OF THE LAKES H’CAP – 800M.
MIGHTY SMILE and DARK STRIPE were a little slow to begin.
For some distance after passing the 200m., DARK STRIPE was held up when disappointed for a run between KARIOI FOREVER and WINEMALL.
Following the race, jockey S. Killen reported that VONACE became unbalanced on 2 occasions rounding the home turn.
RACE 4: ESK SHIRE H’CAP – 1200M.
As A. Pattillo was to be overweight, R. Crilley was substituted as the rider of STEEL SPRINGS. A. Pattillo was fined $50.
R. Jolly was fined $100 for failing to arrive on course in time to fulfil his engagement on BRILLIANT FLYER. R. Goltz was substituted as the rider of that filly.
BRILLIANT FLYER was very slow to begin.
VIDERON was also slow to jump.
M. Privato, rider of IT’S OFFICIAL, was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in after leaving the 1000m. when not clear of DIRTY RASCAL, which resulted in that horse being taken in on to CLEAR PROFIT, which had to be steadied, losing, its position.
STEEL SPRINGS attempted to jump the crossing inside the 200m..
VIDERON had a tendency to hang in over the concluding stages, which placed N. Day at a disadvantage in testing his mount.
Following the event, LYNSLINER, which finished near the rear of the field, was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon, who reported at the time of examination he could find no abnormality
RACE 5: SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H’CAP – 1200M.
Correct weight was delayed to view the film of the race following apprenticeJ. Baker and trainer J. Wallace claiming that ASSURE had been denied the opportunity of a fair start. After hearing evidence from the starter, Mr R. Corvi, the connnections and from the stewards’ own observations, stewards were not satisfied that ASSURE had been denied a fair start and was therefore declared a runner.
ASSURE reared on 2 occasions in the barriers, requiring the assistance of an attendant, and then jumped away awkwardly, losing ground at the start.
MALLEE FIRE, which jumped away awkwardly, also lost ground at the start.
RACE 6: SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H’CAP 1200M.
MR. JAMAICA jumped away awkwardly.
GERRY’S GOLD blundered and shifted out after passing the 200m..
BOLD BABE was inclined to lay out under pressure over the concluding stages.
RACE 7: ESK CUP – 1200M.
The explanation of trainer C. Richardson for the late declaration of C. Maund as the rider of ROMAN NEWS was accepted.
IRISH PILGRIM, which was fractious in the barriers, was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and found suitable to race.
PELE and TEAGUN’S DREAM were slow to begin.
After passing the 1000m., MASTER JOLLY struck the running rail and shifted out, forcing PELE on to LATIN POET.
T. Treichel, rider of SLY DANCER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift out on the home turn, resulting in interference being suffered by RIVER REACH and contributing to interference suffered by STEP SPRITELY. T. Treichel was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 2 July, and to expire at midnight, 15 July 19999.
RACE 8: THE RACEBOOK COMPANY H’CAP – 1750M.
EMBELLISH was slow to begin.
Making the first turn, BALLY ME DARLIN’ got its head up and was inclined to race ungenerously.
After ;leaving the 1000m., COMIC BOOK shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of MISTY GLEAM. A short distance later, COMIC BOOK shifted away from the rails, taking VISUAL DELIGHT and BALLY ME DARLIN’ wider on the track.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
