ESK JOCKEY CLUB CLUB STEWARDS REPORT FRI.16.3.01
STEWARDS PANEL: Mr D. Aurisch (Chairman); Mr J. Hackett; Mr W. Flynn; Mr D. Wann; Mr J. Williamson (Cadet).
WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD
RACE 1: C.E. THORNE H'CAP - 1460M.
M. Allen was reprimanded for failing to claim her full allowance on SENSATE FOCUS.
INDIGIT and SENSATE FOCUS made heavy contact at the start.
Shortly afterwards SENSATE FOCUS shifted out and again hampered INDIGIT.
INDIGIT was inclined to hang in in the middle stages.
Stewards inquired into the seemingly disappointing performance of VITAL SIGN in this event. Rider L. Francis explained to the stewards that after beginning awkwardly the mare never travelled well throughout the event and failed to respond to her hard riding. She further stated that in her view the mare may be looking for a spell. A veterinary examination of VITAL SIGN failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 2: TOM O'BRIEN H'CAP - 1200M.
SUNKEN shifted out at the start and made contact with KAVAMP, which in turn was taken out, hampering AMEEN FELLA.
J. Bryant, rider of KICKEN HOPE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that she permitted her mount to shift in near the 500m. when insufficiently clear of VIVID EDGE, resulting in that gelding having to be checked. J. Bryant was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 21 March and to expire at midnight, 31 March 2001.
C. Small, rider of SUNKEN, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift out rounding the home turn when not clear of MAGIC GAME, causing that horse to be tightened for room and forced out across the heels of GRAND ARROW, resulting in A. Parramore being dislodged from MAGIC GAME. HAD A HUNCH, which was following, had to be severely checked to avoid the fallen horse. C. Small was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 3 weeks, to commence at midnight, 18 March and to expire at midnight 8 April 2001.
RACE 3: IVAN SINNAMON H'CAP - 800M.
Trainer C. Hohn was fined the sum of $50 for failing to declare a rider for BREAKFAST AT SEA by the prescribed time.
DEFENCE CHIEF jumped inwards at the start, causing SAWMISE to be taken in on to MISS SCHIFFER, which had to be checked.
KANAWHA jumped outwards at the start and made contact with SPECIAL SLOT.
Leaving the 400m., STEELY DAWN had to be steadied when briefly tightened for room by DEFENCE CHIEF, which shifted in slightly. K. Bell, rider of DEFENCE CHIEF, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
When questioned, apprentice D. Gay explained that after suffering interference at the start, MISS SCHIFFER appeared to lose interest and then raced greenly in the straight. Following an undertaking from trainer S. Costin to trial the filly, stewards took no direct action, however reminded D. Gay of his obligations, even in difficult circumstances, to fully test his mounts.
RACE 4: PAT CLOAKE H'CAP - 800M.
Trainer S. Trevitt was fined $25 for presenting QUEEN'S ROMANCE without blinkers.
After leaving the 400m., ED'S ACE had to be steadied to avoid the heels of WALL'S GIFT, which shifted in. M. Gray, rider of WALL'S GIFT, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
RACE 5: MALACHI CONROY H'CAP - 800M.
BLUE ON GREEN reared on jumping away and lost ground.
A. Gould, rider of MISTER JAMIESON, was severely reprimanded for permitting her mount to shift out on the home turn and make heavy contact with MORINGA BLUE, causing that horse to become unbalanced.
RACE 6: WALKER ST PATRICK'S DAY - 1200M.
The explanations from both trainer K. Carroll and P. Leard in relation to their riders not being declared by the prescribed times were accepted by the stewards.
Near the 900m., GRANDVITA and IVORY ROAD were tightened for room when racing to the inside of PUMPY, which was momentarily taken inwards by JUST GUS. A. Paramore, rider of JUST GUS, was reminded of his obligations to allow 2 lengths clearance when shifting ground.
Approaching the 600m., RAPPAREE became unbalanced and raced ungenerously, losing ground. GRANDVITA, which was following, had to be checked to avoid the heels of RAPPAREE. Jockey N. Evans stated that the gelding raced awkwardly for a number of strides at this point and he was of the view that his mount may have broken down. A veterinary examination of RAPPAREE failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer D. Strong undertook to provide a full veterinary clearance for RAPPAREE prior to its next race start.
D. Gay, rider of RICH SOUND, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that inside the 100m. he allowed his mount to shift in when being ridden along when insufficiently clear of IVORY ROAD, resulting in that gelding having to be checked when taken across the heels of RUBY HEIGHTS. D. Gay was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 17 March, and to expire at midnight, 28 March 2001.
RACE 7: DAN O'BRIEN MEMORIAL CUP - 1200M.
ACE COOL was slow to begin.
RACE 8: TOM COPLEY H'CAP - 1200M.
MARTY'S BOY and KOREELAH both jumped awkwardly, losing ground at the start.
ROW BOAT was a little slow to begin.
MONTAIGNE was unable to obtain clear running from rounding the home turn and until inside the 100m..
KOREELAH was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight and had to be checked to avoid heels near the 200m..
An inquiry was held into the performance of REGAL GENTLEMAN. A. Gillette explained that when caught 4 wide after the start the horse commenced to hang out and continued to hang out for some distance. He explained that making the home turn whilst hanging out, he was held up for clear running and after entering the straight had to be checked to avoid the heels of COMPOSITA. Trainer M. Guldbransen explained that on a previous occasion the horse had a tendency to hang out and he indicated he would recommend to connections that the gelding be now spelled. The explanation was noted. M. Guldbransen was advised that a warning was being placed on REGAL GENTLEMAN in relation to the gelding's racing manners.
ALL WINNERS AND RAPPAREE WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
