ESK JOCKEY CLUB CLUB STEWARDS REPORT FRI.6.9.02

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr J. Hackett (Chairman), Mr C. McLune, Mr D. Collingwood, Mr M. Tutt, Mr C. Waller (Cadet).

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD

RACE 1: MATER MEDICAL RESEARCH H'CAP - 1460M.

As S. Shield was indisposed, K. Pope was substituted as the rider of FIRE ANT and NOBLE VAIN (Race 4), and A. Merritt as the rider of MCGINTY ROSE (Race 8).

PIPPI was slow to begin.

Passing the 1300m., QUISTADOR was momentarily hampered by SAHARA CANNY, which shifted in.

Shortly after straightening, FIRE ANT, when shifting out to improve, made contact with DUNEDIN FLYER. A short distance later, DUNEDIN FLYER, when under pressure, became unbalanced and shifted wider on the track.

RACE 2: TRANSCONTINENTAL HOTEL BRISBANE H'CAP - 1460M.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by G. Geran, rider of the 2nd placegetter, JESTERANA, against EAST HENDRED being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 50m.. In dismissing the protest, stewards were satisfied that whilst EAST HENDRED had hung in under pressure and made contact with JESTERANA, the incident had not materially affected the result of the race.

EAST HENDRED was slow to begin.

TUNE TO was tightened for room at the start between DREAM TRAP and TARANA AVENUE, which shifted in after the start.

For some distance after the start, TARANA AVENUE and TUNE TO made contact.

Approaching the 1200m., TARANA AVENUE was inclined to shift in away from JESTERANA, which resulted in TUNE TO being tightened and forced in on to DREAM TRAP, which was taken in on to OXFORD BELLE, causing that horse to lose ground.

RACE 3: BRISBANE BUS LINES H'CAP - 1460M.

Stewards have opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the nomination and scratching of COL'S INVESTMENT and PRIDE OF PARIS.

RACE 4: MYER BRISBANE CITY H'CAP - 800M.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by the connections of the 2nd placegetter, RAPID VICTORY, against DEVONPORT being declared the winner, alleging interference leaving the 200m.. After hearing evidence from the riders, and witness jockey M. Crawford, rider of WARIALDA HONEY, stewards dismissed the protest. In dismissing the objection, stewards were of the opinion that whilst DEVONPORT shied and made the crossing leaving the 200m. awkwardly, WARIALDA HONEY also made the crossing awkwardly of its own accord, which resulted in interference being suffered by RAPID VICTORY. When being checked away from the heels of WARIALDA HONEY, RAPID VICTORY blundered and shifted wider on the track.

FAST SHOT, YANDINA LASS, WISE PROSPECTOR and FOREIGN TOUCH were all severely hampered on jumping away when tightened for room between WARIALDA HONEY and SUERAY when both horses shifted ground simultaneously.

LOCHRAE PRINCESS jumped awkwardly and lost ground at the start.

Near the 700m., FOREIGN TOUCH was tightened for room between WISE PROSPECTOR and SUERAY, which shifted in.

Leaving the 700m., NOBLE VAIN and MIKEY'S RUBY bumped.

RACE 5: WILSON HTM H'CAP - 800M.

SEATELL was a late scratching at 9.42 a.m. on veterinary advice.

PAROLE TIME reared at the start and lost ground.

CO TESTEST was slow to begin.

Approaching the course proper, EVENOMATION shifted out, taking COOLATAI LASS and CABARU QUEEN wider on the track.

RACE 6: MATER CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL H'CAP - 1200M.

FREE AND CLEAR was a little slow to begin.

When questioned concerning the performance of JOANIE CEE and his riding of that mare around the home turn, apprentice L. Fitzsimmons explained that when under pressure approaching the home turn, his saddle rolled and he had intended easing the horse out of the race, however after altering his weight he was able to manouvre the saddle back into position, and then was able to test his mount near the 200m.. A veterinary examination of JOANIE CEE failed to reveal any abnormality. L. Fitzsimmons' explanation was noted.

RACE 7: BETTY MCGRATH H'CAP - 1200M.

MANTELO and PRINCE ZEDDAAN were tightened for room at the start between ROYAL CANNON and COUNTRY ROSE, which shifted out.

Approaching the 1000m., VAIN AND HANDY commenced to overrace and shifted out, making heavy contact with IMPORTED PRINCE.

Leaving the 1000m., when racing in restricted room, PRINCE ZEDDAAN shifted in, making heavy contact with the running rail and lost ground.

RACE 8: MATER TRUST H'CAP - 1200M.

Trainer J. Wade was fined $50 for failing to notify S. Campton as the rider for EXTREME RED by the prescribed time.

TIGER MALT and NOBLE CRUISE were slow to begin.

TOUCH PRINCE jumped outwards at the start.

Shortly after the start, NOBLE CRUISE was tightened between EXTREME RED and MCGINTY ROSE, which shifted out.

When the pace steadied approaching the 800m., DARTANYON had to be eased off the heels of leader, MCGINTY ROSE. TOUCH PRINCE, which was trailing, had to be restrained off the heels of DARTANYON, and similarly TIGER MALT, which was trailing, had to be eased off the heels of TOUCH PRINCE.

TOUCH PRINCE overraced in the middle stages.

Leaving the 200m., SUMMER WALTZ was momentarily held up inside the heels of CONGRESSIONAL, which shifted in slightly under pressure.

For some distance approaching and rounding the home turn, TOUCH PRINCE was held up for clear running.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
