RACE 1 – L & M RETRAVISION HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
Approaching the turn near the 900 metres TELEPRINCE commenced to over-race and had to be checked off the heels of TARIAMA which subsequently then shifted out causing SEPARATE to be checked severely. SONIC YOUTH which was following then had to be shifted out abruptly and this caused KING CANOBOLAS also to be checked.
Rounding the home turn STRADDIE BOWLING shifted out abruptly to obtain clear running.
Jockey D SPRIGGS was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of TELEPRINCE today. He explained that after TELEPRINCE was slowly away his mount then commenced to over-race and failed to run on. The club’s veterinary surgeon examined TELEPRINCE which revealed an old wound to the off knee was bleeding after the race, however, was showing no signs of lameness. Mr J GILMOUR the representative for Trainer K MAN could offer no excuses for the disappointing performance and advised that he would monitor the gelding’s fitness closely in the next few days. TELEPRINCE was also sent to be swabbed.
RACE 2 – L & M HOTEL MOTEL SUPPLIES HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
PETROSIAN was slowly away.
Inside the final 200 metres RARE REVIEW had to be steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of LET’S JIVE after being taken out slightly by LIVE IN FAITH.
RACE 3 – PANASONIC HANDICAP – 900 METRES
Soon after entering the home straight until nearing the 200 metres STRIKES TWICE was unable to obtain clear running.
Jockey B STANLEY and also Mr B HILL the foreman for Trainer G RYAN were questioned regarding the manner in which RIPROARIOUS was ridden today. Jockey Stanley explained that he was instructed by Mr Ryan that the horse would naturally get back in the race and he said that after it jumped awkwardly his mount was unable to keep up. He also added that in the early stages of the straight he endeavoured to ride his mount out hands and heels as it was not stretching out in the normal manner. He also added that when his mount commenced to run on over the final 100 metres he was obliged to stop riding when disappointed for clear running between MANIPULATE and STRIKES TWICE. Both parties were advised that the manner in which RIPROARIOUS was ridden today, particularly in the home straight, was of major concern to the stewards and were advised that in future to ensure their mounts are ridden with sufficient vigour as to leave no room for query.
RACE 4 – WESTINGHOUSE HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
Soon after entering the home straight until inside the final 100 metres SPRIGHTLY NOBLE was unable to obtain clear running between OUT ON and BEYOND YOUR MEANS.
RACE 5 – DAEWOO HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
Inside the final 100 metres ENCHANTED EVENING was buffeted between QUICK KATE and BEYONDA both of which shifted ground slightly.
RACE 6 – FISHER & PAYKEL HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
Approaching the 200 metres PREANA ROAD which was under pressure had to be checked when CRONICK shifted in after being taken in by CELESTIAL IMPACT which took a doubtful run between CRONICK and also VAIN NEDIYM. In all the circumstances the stewards were of the view that there were contributing circumstances and therefore no direct action was taken, however, D COLEMAN (CELESTIAL IMPACT) was issued with a reprimand for obtaining a run where there was doubtful room
Over the concluding stages of the race TERTIARY had difficulty obtaining clear running.
A veterinary inspection of DEEP TRICK was ordered after that gelding compounded in the straight. This revealed that DEEP TRICK had struck its near hind fetlock during the running of the race.
RACE 7 – SIMPSON/KELVINATOR HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES
Trainer K SCHWEIDA was fined $25 for presenting ROADINSKY to the enclosure without blinkers.
RACE 8 –JOHNNIE WALKER SCOTCH WHISKY HANDICAP – 2,200 METRES
Approaching the winning post the first time SIR MARKIE shifted in when not quite clear of DANGEROUS FORTUNE resulting in that horse having to be eased. K POPE (SIR MARKIE) was issued with a reprimand and reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.
Leaving the 600 metres PLATA ORA which was endeavouring to shift out made contact with SYBERITE on several occasions, then shortly after this were both subjected to crowding when SIR MARKIE improved to their outside. This caused COME ON GRACE which was following to be checked to avoid the heels of PLATA ORA. In all the circumstances no direct action was taken, however, both J FELIX (PLATA ORA) and K POPE (SIR MARKIE) were advised to exercise more care.
EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH TELEPRINCE.
