STEWARDS’ REPORT

GOLD COAST TURF CLUB

Monday, 31 January 2000

WEATHER: FINE TRACK: DEAD
(UPGRADED TO GOOD AT 11.30 A.M.)

RAIL: OUT 2M FROM THE 1000M TO THE 400M
OUT 3M FOR REMAINDER OF TRACK

STEWARDS’
PANEL: MR T. BAILEY (CHAIRMAN), MR J. HAIGH, MR C. MCLUNE,
MR D. TAPSALL, MR S. BARRETT AND MISS S. GILLESPIE (CADET)

RACE 1 – FIVE WEEKS TO “SUPERBOWL” HANDICAP – 1800 METRES

Stewards permitted the track to be upgraded from DEAD to GOOD at 11.30 a.m.

Rounding the home turn BLAZING ALEX blundered.

J. HOOPERT (WHERE’S PALMWOODS) was issued with a reprimand for returning to scale in excess of half a kilo over his declared weight.

RACE 2 – ROB MCGOWN THOROUGHBREDS HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

CEREMONIAL SON was slow away.

NEVER IN DOUBT jumped awkwardly and was then steadied away from the heels of SEMISYR.

RACE 3 – BAD GIRLS AUSTRALIA – 1400 METRES

On jumping THE JURY PREVAILS shifted out and made contact with GREY GAL. Shortly after this THE JURY PREVAILS became unbalanced after ANIMATE shifted out forcing that horse out onto GREY GAL.

Leaving the 1000 metres LUNAR LIMIT had to be steadied to avoid the heels of HELLCAT which shifted in when not quite clear. A. BAKER (HELLCAT) was reminded of his obligations.

BAKATIME suffered a bleeding attack during the race from both nostrils and is now ineligible to race for a period of three(3) months.

RACE 4 – ROB MCGOWN THOROUGHBREDS HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

S. GALLOWAY was questioned regarding the performance of CANTERBURY DOWNS today. He explained that in the middle stages of the race his mount refused to settle, racing with its head in the air and for the remainder of the race continued to lay in and out. It was established after the race that the ring bit had turned back to front in the horse’s mouth. As a result of this a Veterinary inspection of CANTERBURY DOWNS was ordered revealing contusions to the lower jaw. Stewards raised this matter with Trainer Mr H. Wilson so as to avoid a similar incident in the future.

RACE 5 – FIRESIGN HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

On jumping ALL SPARKLE and MINGAMOO made contact and soon afterwards ALL SPARKLE was steadied away from the heels of MINGAMOO.

RACE 6 – ROB MCGOWN THOROUGHBREDS HANDICAP – 1800 METRES

Stewards considered an objection lodged by N. JOLLY the rider of INTELLECT which finished second against HALOGEN (A. COWIE) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference inside the final 200 metres. On the evidence it was established that near the 200 metres INTELLECT resented being hit over the head by the whip of A. COWIE (HALOGEN) however, in the opinion of the Stewards the incident did not justify an alteration to the placings and therefore they dismissed the objection.

Shortly after this incident INTELLECT was then accidentally struck over the head by the whip of L. HARRIS (OUT ON).

For some distance leaving the 500 metres until the early stages of the home straight INTELLECT was unable to improve when held up for clear running.

For a major part of the home straight LIMERICK LAD had difficulty in obtaining clear running. In particular approaching the 200 metres when crowded for room between OUT ON and KING CANOBOLAS which shifted out under pressure momentarily.

Near the 100 metre mark KING CANOBOLAS had to be steadied to avoid the heels of LIMERICK LAD which shifted in.

Stewards questioned Trainer G. Wehlow after RIVER’S RUN finished a distant last. He explained that the gelding had been in work for a long period of time and as a result of today’s performance would now be sent for a spell.

Stewards opened an enquiry into the reason why N. JOLLY (INTELLECT) was dislodged from the crossing after the winning post. After taking evidence from L. HARRIS (OUT ON) and also N. JOLLY the Stewards were of the opinion that when OUT ON was negotiating the crossing it shied and shifted out causing INTELLECT to clip its heels and fall, therefore in these circumstances the Stewards were of the opinion that the incident was accidental.

RACE 7 – ROB MCGOWN THOROUGHBREDS HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

Near the 1100 metres PRIDE OF THE TURF made contact with MOORABIN and then shifted in forcing TWISTED across the heels of BETTER RED causing TWISTED to be checked.

Leaving the 400 metres TONTORE was held up for clear running and subsequently had to be checked away from the heels of SANKARI.

Leaving the 300 metres MOORABIN had to be steadied to avoid the heels of PRIDE OF THE TURF which shifted out.

RACE 8 –ROB MCGOWN THOROUGHBREDS HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

As G. O’SULLIVAN was indisposed Stewards permitted L. HILL to be substituted as the rider of THE HAIG.

The start of this race was delayed several minutes when SERINSK became fractious behind the barriers and dislodged its rider. The mare was subsequently a late withdrawal at 5.12 p.m. on Veterinary advice. Prior to announcement of correct weight all monies invested on SERINSK were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 11 cents in the dollar for a win and 11 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket.

Leaving the 400 metres until approximately the 200 metres SIDE SWIPE was unable to improve when disappointed for clear running.

K. BELL (CHOICE GLARE) was issued with a reprimand for shifting out near the 100 metres when not quite clear of THE HAIG which subsequently had to be eased.

It was noted that THE HAIG was obliged to race wide throughout.

EIGHT WINNERS PLUS BAKATIME WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
