STEWARDS’ MR T BAILEY (CHAIRMAN), MR A REARDON, MR J HAIGH,
PANEL: MR J GRAHAM, MR D TAPSALL and MR M TUTT (CADET)
RACE 1 – QANTAS MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
As G DOUGHTY was indisposed, L HILL was substituted as the rider of MONTY’S ROAD. Likewise A RUSSELL was indisposed and substituted by M BENNETT as the rider of FLICKAFEST.
The start of this race was delayed for several minutes when the bridle on BON JACABITE broke and subsequently had to be replaced.
MONTY’S ROAD and CANADA COUNTY were slowly away.
Approaching the 1,000 metres I SEE RED which was over-racing had to be checked to avoid the heels of LUCKY PIERRE.
Inside the 1,000 metres NOBLE OPTIONS had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SNIP A DANE which shifted in.
Inside the 600 metres SNIP A DANE had to be steadied to avoid the heels of BON JACABITE which shifted in slightly.
Inside the final 100 metres PYFO was inclined to hang in.
When questioned regarding the performance of WHO’S CRYING NOW today, Jockey T DUCKETT explained that it was their intention to ride the mare forward however, after being in the barriers for some time it failed to show any early speed and indeed opted to use the whip. He further added that his mount failed to travel at any stage and failed to run on.
It was noted after the race that LUCKY PIERRE had lost its near fore plate.
Trainer K NIPPERESS reported after the race that CANADA COUNTY had lost a tooth.
RACE 2 – H. HARVEY & CO. SMASH REPAIRS (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
Both PRESIDENCY and LARABIA were fractious in the barriers.
LARABIA was slowly away.
MADAME D’ALBRET jumped awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of SAVA.
Leaving the 1,000 metres AGINTOY was checked to avoid the heels of LARABIA.
Rounding the home turn SANDY DARLING shifted out to improve resulting in SKY ROYAL which was following having to be steadied to avoid that horse’s heels.
Inside the final 50 metres LARABIA was disappointed for clear running between MADAME D’ALBRET and TELEBAN.
PRESIDENCY raced very wide throughout.
RACE 3 – SPIES HECKER (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES
K BELL (ROAD TO INTELLECT) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in leaving the 1,400 metres causing crowding to MYSTIC LADY, CARBON PRINCE and HURRY HURRY to a point where FAVOUR THE BRAVE lost its rightful running and was checked severely. K BELL’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence midnight 8 March 2000 and to expire midnight 18 March 2000.
N PAINE (SILVERANA) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in near the 900 metres when insufficiently clear of ROAD TO INTELLECT causing that horse to be checked. N PAINE’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence immediately and to expire midnight 16 March 2000.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of INTELLECT, Jockey B STEWART explained the connections were confident of the gelding’s chances in light of its track work leading up to the event and he was able to ride his mount to instructions, that being to obtain a position a little worse than mid field and when placed under pressure leaving the 500 metres his mount failed to run on. A veterinary examination of INTELLECT revealed no obvious abnormalities and a swab sample was obtained.
RACE 4 – QVR QUEENSLAND (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
FORGING’S LAD was a late withdrawal at 2:36 p.m. by order of stewards on vet’s advice after the gelding became fractious in the barriers. Prior to the announcement of ‘correct weight’ all monies invested on FORGING’S LAD were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 16 cents in the dollar for a win and 14 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. Trainer L KELLY was advised that he must obtain a Barrier Certificate for FORGING’S LAD prior to its next start.
DOOLEY’S DREAM raced wide throughout.
Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of PURPORT after it performed poorly. The examination revealed the horse to have sustained a minor laceration over the medial sesamoid bone of the off fore leg.
RACE 5 – H. HARVEY SMASH REPAIRS GOLD COAST GUINEAS SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES (THREE-YEARS-OLD) – 1,400 METRES
CAPTAIN SKUTTLE was a late withdrawal at 11:10 a.m. acting on vet’s advice.
For a short distance after the start MIGHT AND GOLD became unbalanced after making contact with TERJULE and then shifted in making contact with GOLD DREDGE.
RACE 6 – MAGIC MILLIONS SUPERBOWL 2000 FINAL QUALITY HANDICAP (TWO-YEARS-OLD) FILLIES – 1,200 METRES
SENSATIONAL GIRL jumped very awkwardly almost dislodging L HILL and shortly after this shifted out and made heavy contact with MAGIC OF MACKAY.
Rounding the home turn ON THE RUN was checked to avoid the heels of KOHINOOR BLUE which shifted out. The stewards were of the view that ON THE RUN contributed to this incident by having an inclination to hang in, therefore no further action was taken. Nevertheless, N JOLLY (KOHINOOR BLUE) was cautioned and reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.
M CAHILL (WANCHAI LADY) was fined $100 for returning to scale in excess of ½ kg over his declared weight.
RACE 7 – MAGIC MILLIONS SUPERBOWL 2000 FINAL QUALITY HANDICAP (TWO-YEARS-OLD) COLTS AND GELDINGS – 1,200 METRES
T DUCKETT was fined $50 for accepting a ride on HURRY IN when found to be overweight. N PAINE was substituted as the rider of HURRY IN.
G BAKER was dislodged from EDUARDO in the mounting enclosure prior to the race.
Approaching the 800 metres DAMAGED became unbalanced and shifted in abruptly striking the running rail which resulted in JUST CASSIDY which was following to be checked and shifted out abruptly forcing STORMY LODGE, MOSES DRIVER, EDUARDO and HURRY IN extremely wider on the track. This also resulted in POLISH COUNT which was following JUST CASSIDY to be checked in consequence.
RACE 8 –MANO’S RESTAURANT WELTER – 1,300 METRES
When questioned regarding the manner in which FLYING GUY was ridden today, particularly over the final 400 metres of the race, Jockey G COLLESS explained that he was instructed to ride his mount back in a rearward position and in light of the fact that the horse was having its first run back for some time he was instructed to work his mount into the race on the home turn. He said that once clear in the straight near the 300 metres he felt that in his opinion he placed his mount under pressure in accordance with his instructions and that his mount’s run had ended approaching the winning post. His explanation was noted.
EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH INTELLECT, CONDUCT and UNCLE JAMES.
