STEWARDS’ REPORT

GOLD COAST TURF CLUB

Tuesday, 30 May 2000

WEATHER: FINE TRACK: GOOD

RAIL: OUT 2.5 M FROM THE 800M TO THE 400M
REMAINDER TRUE POSITION

STEWARDS’
PANEL: MR T. BAILEY (CHAIRMAN), MR J. GRAHAM, MR J. HAIGH,
MR W. GEGGIE AND MR M. TUTT (CADET)

RACE 1 – GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND ASSOCIATION MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1110 METRES

On jumping MISS ZAVARGO was crowded for room between HANNIBAL LECTER and KILMANAHAN which shifted out.

Near the 800 metres SOUTHERN JOY which was commencing to improve had to be checked off the heels of KING ZOFF and as a result shifted out and made heavy contact with KILMANAHAN.

HOT FEET raced wide throughout.

GOLD SIERRA suffered a bleeding attack from both nostrils during this race and will now be ineligible to race for a period of three (3) months.

RACE 2 – WIZARD MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1205 METRES

PINUPSKI jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

Near the 700 metres SALTY PLUM made heavy contact with the running rail and shifted out. This caused BOLD COMBINATION to shift out abruptly forcing LEGAL OPINION out across the heels of LAKEVALE subsequently having to be checked.

For a major part of the home straight LEGAL OPINION was inclined to lay in placing S. GALLOWAY at a distinct disadvantage when he was unable to ride his mount out in his normal manner.

Stewards questioned Mr M. Potter the stableforeman for Trainer Mr J. Wallace regarding the apparent improved performance of HE’S A TREASURE today as compared with its last start at the Gold Coast on the 13th May, 2000. He explained that on that occasion the colt had drawn a wide barrier and had no luck in the race when obliged to race wide and also benefited from the run after being third up from a lengthy spell.

RACE 3 – ACCOUNTANTS ACROSS AUSTRALIA MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1600 METRES

Stewards considered an objection lodged by APP. A. MORRISON the rider of CIRCO which finished fourth against TRUE ENOUGH (A. GILLETT) being declared the third placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference inside the final 50 metres. On the evidence the Stewards were of the view that over the final 50 metres CIRCO shifted ground outwards to race tightly against TRUE ENOUGH, which in deed restricted the whip action of both APP. A. MORRISON and Jockey A. GILLETT. Therefore, in the Stewards opinion the objection was deemed frivolous, was subsequently dismissed and APP. A. MORRISON was fined the sum of $100.00.

Near the 1200 metres IMPOSITION brushed the running rail.

APP. A. MORRISON was issued with a charge of misconduct under AR83(a) for the manner in which he conducted himself in the Stewards’ room stemming from the protest decision and was subsequently fined a further $300.00.

RACE 4 – FASTPROOF PRESS HANDICAP – 1600 METRES

Over the concluding stages KILORA QUEEN shifted out under pressure forcing SWAPSEA wider on the track.

RACE 5 – AFFORDABLE DECORATORS HANDICAP – 1600 METRES

After considering submissions from Jockey B. STEWART and also the Trainer of SCHARNHORST Mr D. Duryea the Stewards believed that there was sufficient evidence to suggest that B. STEWART had a firm engagement to ride the said horse however, had been replaced prior to Jockey declarations time by a claiming apprentice. In these circumstances the Stewards ruled that B. STEWART was entitled to a losing ride fee and any subsequent prize money percentage.

For some distance in the early stages of the home straight MY PAL BOB was disappointed for clear running.

It was noted that SIR ROCKAFELLA lost its off fore plate during the race.

RACE 6 – PRECISION EYEWEAR HANDICAP – 2015 METRES

Rounding the home turn and for a major part of the home straight PRAYDO, OUR ANGEL and SAILOR’S LARK were all disappointed for clear running.

Also near the 200 metres when SAILOR’S LARK was endeavouring to shift out to obtain a clear run it was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of N. PAINE (GALLANT PRIDE).

N. DAY (PLACID REIGN) reported after the race that near the 200 metres he lost the use of his left stirrup iron and therefore was unable to ride his mount out in his normal manner.

RACE 7 – “LOCHIE” HANDICAP – 1110 METRES

PRECILLA and ZIP ATTACK were slow away.

Rounding the home turn GOING PLACES shifted out slightly resulting in CHAMPAGNE JACK shifting out abruptly making contact with KENSINGTON QUEEN.

Near the 200 metres BAYKAN HERO shifted out under pressure resulting in GOING PLACES which was following having to be steadied.

RACE 8 – SECURE PARKING HANDICAP – 1205 METRES

Near the 500 metres VINTAGE RESERVE shifted out in an effort to obtain clear running and made contact with the hind quarters of VAUTIN.

Near the 200 metres VINTAGE RESERVE hung in and as a result had to be checked away from the heels of GOLDEN PEAK.

Shortly after this VINTAGE RESERVE was then shifted out and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of CHARIOT’S RHYTHM which was also placed in restricted room and as a result of a shift inwards by VIDA CELESTE.

A Veterinary examination of GO JUAN GO was ordered after that gelding finished well beaten and this showed some signs of respiratory distress. Trainer Mr B. Bowditch will be interviewed at a later date regarding the horse’s welfare.

EIGHT WINNERS PLUS GOLD SIERRA WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
