STEWARDS’ REPORT

GOLD COAST TURF CLUB

Monday, 24 July 2000

WEATHER: FINE TRACK: GOOD

RAIL: OUT 8M FROM THE 1800M TO THE 1000M
OUT 8.5M FROM THE 1000M TO THE WINNING POST

STEWARDS’
PANEL: MR T. BAILEY (CHAIRMAN), MR J. HAIGH, MR J. GRAHAM,
MR D. TAPSALL AND MR M. TUTT (CADET)

RACE 1 – JUSTINCASE MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1800 METRES

A. ERHART was dislodged from MALFUNCTION enroute to the barrier. The Club’s Doctor passed A. ERHART fit to ride. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon inspected MALFUNCTION and the gelding was also passed fit to start.

NEDSYND was slow away.

M. BENNETT (MARCEAU ROAD) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 500 metres causing CHEERY BELLE to be eased.

A Veterinary examination of SILVER TARRI after the race revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 2 – KING CAPRI MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

Due to traffic difficulties Stewards permitted S. SHIELD to replace J. POLLARD as the rider of RAW REPORT.

SHERIFF WOODY was examined behind the barriers after being kicked in the off hind leg by another runner and subsequently was passed fit to start.

CEREMONIAL SON was slow away.

Stewards questioned both C. SMALL and Trainer G. Keay regarding the manner in which SHERIFF WOODY was ridden today. Jockey C. SMALL advised the Stewards he was given no firm instructions and due to the wide barrier he elected to ride his mount back to avoid covering excessive ground. He further added that near the 800 metres he was obliged to restrain his mount off the heels of GOODWOOD GIRL and as a result was further back than he would have liked. C. SMALL went on to also explain that near the 200 metres he was disappointed for clear running and had to be checked to avoid the heels of RAW REPORT. Trainer G. Keay confirmed that there were no specific instructions and felt that SHERIFF WOODY was disadvantaged mainly by the wide barrier. He added that once the gelding is able to get over journeys longer than today’s distance and a favourable barrier draw he would expect the gelding to improve. Both parties were advised that the manner in which SHERIFF WOODY was ridden today was of concern to the Stewards however, after having the benefit of their explanations no further action would be taken.

The representative for Trainer B. McLachlan was advised that due to GOODWOOD GIRL’S poor performance after pulling up a distant last the filly would now be required to perform in a barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards. A Veterinary examination of GOODWOOD GIRL revealed no obvious abnormality.

RACE 3 – CHARLTON BOY HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

As N. JOLLY was unfit to ride Stewards permitted the following replacements:-

Race 3 WAHOO L. HARRIS
Race 4 SHRUG J. POLLARD
Race 7 JUST AT KNIGHT K. POPE
Race 8 T. PATTILLO ZUKA

Leaving the 1000 metres HAD NO SAY was checked to avoid the heels of JASTANJAH which steadied.

Near the 300 metre mark TRI MIRACLE shifted in slightly under pressure and brushed MR. LEVI.

RACE 4 – IMA SHADOW HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

KING COCKY was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon after becoming fractious in the barriers and was subsequently passed fit to start. The representative for Trainer L. Olsen was advised that a warning would be placed on KING COCKY regarding the gelding’s barrier manners. They were further advised that should KING COCKY perform similarly in the future further action may have to be considered.

The start of this race was delayed when VELLETT refused to enter the barrier. VELLETT was subsequently a late withdrawal by order of the Stewards at 2.22 p.m. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on VELLETT were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 19 cents in the dollar for a win and 16 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. The representative for Trainer G. RYAN was advised that they must obtain another barrier certificate for VELLETT before it is permitted to race again.

hortly after the start KING COCKY had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SNIPPETS’ CHARM which shifted in.

Near the 200 metres MR. AWESOME shifted out to improve and hampered STYLISH AMBER and KING COCKY.

S. GALLOWAY (MR. AWESOME) was issued with a reprimand for returning to scale in excess of one-half kilo over his declared weight. On arriving at this decision Stewards took into account S. GALLOWAY’S good record with regard to weight related matters.

RACE 5 – BLUE’S FINITO HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

Leaving the 1000 metres SEMIFORMAL got its head up when being steadied off the heels of RARE REVIEW and as a result shifted out making contact with PAVLODAR which subsequently forced that horse wider on the track. AFFIRMED’S LASS which was following had to be steadied to avoid PAVLODAR’S heels.

Rounding the home turn PACIFIC QUEST shifted out abruptly to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with SEMIFORMAL, which in turn forced AFFIRMED’S LASS wider on the track. APP. A. MORRISON (PACIFIC QUEST) was reminded of his responsibility towards his fellow riders when shifting ground.

RACE 6 – CHRISTOLE HANDICAP – 1800 METRES

SPRITELY EVITA was inclined to overrace in the early stages.

Leaving the 800 metres both CLASSIC LIGHT and JORDAN’S TABOO raced very wide.

RACE 7 – ROMANINO HANDICAP – 1300 METRES

Trainer B. Miller was fined $25.00 for presenting COMPLIANT to race without its blinkers.

Leaving the 800 metres OUR PROUD TIGER had to be eased when crowded for room between KNATMEG which shifted out away from the heels of CENTURY’S GIFT and JUST AT KNIGHT which shifted in when not quite clear. K. POPE (JUST AT KNIGHT) was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

Near the 200 metres APP. A. MORRISON (SLANG) dropped his whip.

RACE 8 – LORD DIERE HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

WAR DANCER jumped awkwardly.

Shortly after the start MAY ROYAL and OUR CHARIOTEER were crowded and JAVA HEART was checked when ZUKA shifted out and ALL COLOURS shifted in. Shortly after this ALL COLOURS shifted back out to relieve the crowding causing SLY DANCER to be checked when racing between ALL COLOURS and STAGE to its outside. TAD PATTILLO (ZUKA) was reprimanded for failing to make a greater effort to keep his mount on a straight course.

Near the 300 metres SLY DANCER shifted out to improve resulting in STAGE which was following having to be steadied.

Near the 100 metre mark MAY ROYAL and SLY DANCER both shifted ground and made heavy contact.

EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
