GENERAL

Race 5 – General Nediym (Fillies & Mares Class 1) Handicap – 1,400 metres
It was reported that RED COUNTESS subsequently pulled up lame in the near fore leg.
RACE 1 – NOTORIOUS AT THE DRINK (TWO-YEARS-OLD) HANDICAP – 900 METRES
HIGHPOWER LADY jumped very awkwardly and lost considerable ground. Trainer H WILSON was advised that a warning would be placed on the filly regarding her manners.
Shortly after the start GO GIRL shifted in abruptly and made heavy contact with HEAVEN’S QUEST.
Leaving the 200 metres HEAVEN’S QUEST shifted out abruptly when struck with the whip obliging its rider L HILL to stop riding and straighten it. As a result of this incident CITY EXPRESS was hampered.
Near the 50 metres L HILL (HEAVEN’S QUEST) had his whip knocked out of his hand by the whip of D TANTI (WHAM BAM).
RACE 2 – THIRSTY DOG (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP DIV. 1 – 1,200 METRES
AWESOME SHADOW was a late withdrawal by order of the stewards at 12:45 p.m. on vet’s advice as a result of the bridle coming off the filly and then being re-captured by the barrier attendants. Prior to the announcement of ‘correct weight’ all monies invested on AWESOME SHADOW were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 13 cents in the dollar for a win and 12 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket.
After jumping awkwardly DIAMOND IN DUBAI made heavy contact with TELE SERIES which shifted in.
Near the 1,100 metres FLAMING GOD had to be steadied to avoid the heels of FRENCH GENTLEMAN which shifted in when not quite clear.
Making the 1,000 metres PASSIONE which was racing ungenerously lost ground when tightened for room by MARX which was crowded by TELE SERIES which shifted in and away from FRENCH GENTLEMAN which also shifted in momentarily.
FRENCH GENTLEMAN was obliged to race wide throughout and forced extremely wide on the home turn.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ANNO DOMINI, APP. M RODD could offer no excuses however, the gelding did have a tendency to hang out for a major part of the race. Trainer J BEADMAN advised stewards that the gelding had been in work some 10 weeks since a spell and in his view was close to peak fitness for today’s race. Stewards advised Trainer J BEADMAN that in all the circumstances ANNO DOMINI would be required to perform in an official barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards before it is permitted to race again.
RACE 3 – MAGIC IN THE MIDDLE (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP DIV. 2 – 1,200 METRES
B BOWDITCH was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for ROYAL CALIBRE by the prescribed time.
Stewards also permitted K BELL to be substituted for J TAYLOR as the rider of TRANSCENDENT, as he had commitments at Eagle Farm today. In all the circumstances no direct action was taken however J TAYLOR was issued with a reprimand for accepting two rides.
BATHALONA was slowly away.
BUNDALEER was forced to race very wide rounding the home turn.
RACE 4 – HERITAGE FUNERALS GOLD COAST (MAIDEN) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
Soon after the start WILTON commenced to race quite greenly and near the 1,200 metres shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider and as a result DONBRODI which was following clipped its heels and almost fell. Trainer R BALCOMBE will be advised that a warning will be placed on the gelding’s racing manners and should WILTON perform similarly, further action will have to be considered.
Due to a lack of pace leaving the 1,200 metres a number of runners commenced to over race, the main sufferers being OUR ANGEL, GAUDEAMUS, WILTON and REIN NE VA PLUS.
Rounding the home turn and for some distance in the early stages of the home straight ROCKTONIA was unable to go forward when held up for clear running behind OUR ANGEL and to the inside of GRAND CHAPTER.
RACE 5 – THE DRINK NIGHTCLUB (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES
Approaching the 200 metres RAW TORQUE was checked when attempting a run where there was doubtful room between LADY SHERPA and MY LINDY LU. In an effort to relieve the pressure M BENNETT the rider of MY LINDY LU shifted his mount out abruptly and in doing so made heavy contact with ANCORA FILA to his outside forcing that mare off balance and wider on the track. Stewards cautioned N JOLLY (RAW TORQUE) for attempting a run where there was insufficient room and also M BENNETT whilst endeavouring to exercise care was reminded of the limited amount of course proper when the rail is out 7 metres in the straight.
RACE 6 – LADIES NIGHT AT THE DRINK (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
MEGAFUN raced very wide throughout.
For a major part of the straight CHARMED PRINCE failed to obtain clear running and therefore went to the post not fully tested.
When questioned regarding the manner in which LADY TRICE was ridden today, L HILL explained that he was given no specific instructions and he went on to add that his mount jumped very well however, he was unable to take up a position and gain cover. Therefore he elected to push on as he was going to be caught 4 and 5 horses wide and to do this he eventually ended up leading. He said that once the mare straightened for home she failed to run on.
When questioned regarding the manner in which KOHINOOR BLUE was ridden today, N JOLLY explained that he was instructed to ride the filly quietly today as she had not been finishing off her races although it was not his intention to be back last. He said that a contributing factor was the amount of early speed. His explanation was noted.
Stewards questioned C SMALL regarding the disappointing performance of MR. NEWSAGENCY and he could offer no excuses for the poor run. Trainer H NORMAN was also at a loss as to the poor performance however indicated MR. NEWSAGENCY may be in need of a spell. He advised stewards that he would inform them in the next few days as to MR. NEWSAGENCY’s immediate future. A veterinary examination of MR. NEWSAGENCY revealed no obvious abnormalities and the gelding was also sent to be swabbed.
RACE 7 – CRAZY RON’S (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
As D CRAVEN was stood down by the club’s doctor, stewards permitting the following rider replacements:
Race 7 - M BENNETT WINGS AWAY
Race 9 – C SMALL MISTER DANZIG
WINGS AWAY jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
A veterinary examination of SUNBURNT BOY after the race revealed that the gelding was sore in the near fore leg. Trainer D FELTON was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be submitted for the gelding before it is permitted to race again.
RACE 8 –SUMMERHEAT AT THE DRINK (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
Rounding the home turn CORNWALL BAY was unable to improve when held up for clear running and then near the 300 metres was crowded for room by MORE DRAMA which had shifted out abruptly and STAR MASTER which was taken in slightly by MISS CRABOPPLE. It was established that prior to the incident K SAWYERS the rider of MORE DRAMA lost the use of both irons after his saddle had rolled to the off side. In these circumstances no further action was taken.
On entering the home straight NOBLE KAAPTIVE clipped the heels of MISS CRABOPPLE, blundered and almost dislodged Jockey D TANTI. D TANTI lost the use of both stirrup irons in the incident and therefore went to the post without being tested.
RACE 9 – THE DRINK NIGHTCLUB XMAS RACEDAY (CLASS 6) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
Prior to the race M BENNETT suffered a harmless fall from LARGER behind the barriers.
M BENNETT (LARGER) was issued with a reprimand for shifting in approaching the 1,000 metres when not sufficiently clear of ROMAN PROTÉGÉ resulting in that horse having to be eased.
Rounding the home turn ROMAN PROTÉGÉ which was commencing to weaken shifted in momentarily causing crowding to KAAPTIVE DELIGHT which made contact with the fence.
For a major part of the race ZUCCARO was obliged to race wide.
A veterinary examination of KAAPTIVE DELIGHT after the race revealed the gelding had sustained a scalping wound to the near hind leg.
NINE WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH MR. NEWSAGENCY.
