STEWARDS’ MR C CLIFFORD (CHAIRMAN), MR J HAIGH, MR J GRAHAM,
PANEL: MR W BIRCH and MR M TUTT (CADET)

RACE 1 – ROMANINO MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES

Shortly after the start BIG KASEY was slightly inconvenienced between STAR PACIFIC and ENCOMIA.

Jockey K MAHONEY (NIGHT IN VIENNA) was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the line.

The club’s veterinary surgeon reported that STAR PACIFIC was galloped on the near hind tendon during the race.

RACE 2 – SMITH’S SNACKVEND (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP

TWIN ISLAND was slow to jump.

On jumping OFFICE HOURS shifted in and made contact with BIOKOVO.

On entering the straight TWIN ISLAND was momentarily held up for clear running.

Over the concluding stages BIOKOVO had a tendency to lay in and made contact with CAMBERWELL.

RACE 3 – COFFEE ROASTER MAIDEN HANDICAP – 900 METRES

VEESAR which received a minor laceration to the mouth en route to the course was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

YAROOMBA JACK which broke through the barriers prior to the start was quickly recaptured and took its place in the field.

LUCKY EYES jumped away awkwardly and shifted out taking ULTRA SWING out on to MISS MOZAIRE.

At the 700 metres PURE METTLE shifted in and made contact with VEESAR. PESTULANCE which was following had to be steadied off the heels of PURE METTLE.

Trainer D SUTTON was advised that LUCKY EYES which proved difficult to load would require a further barrier certificate before being permitted to race again.

Trainer D CALDWELL was advised that MISS MOZAIRE which was fractious in the barriers and ULTRA SWING which proved difficult to load would require further barrier certificates before being permitted to race again.

RACE 4 – SODEXHO (COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES) CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1,200

OUR CHEVAL which was fractious in the barriers and broke through the starting gates was quickly restrained. The gelding was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

ROOFTOP FLYER and DISTINCT DANGER jumped away awkwardly.

EMPYREAN was slow to jump.

App. P HAMMERSLEY was reprimanded for returning to scale in excess of ½ kg over his allocated weight.

RACE 5 – STUDENT GUILD (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES

No report

RACE 6 – GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY GOLD COAST (FILLIES AND MARES) CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES

AQUATAI was slow to jump.

CELESTIAL CYCLONE and NO SAINT made contact on jumping.

Approaching the 1,100 metres GARFIELD’S GAL shifted out despite the efforts of its rider and made contact with MADAM FRENCH. Shortly after CELESTIAL CYCLONE shifted in inconveniencing MADAM FRENCH.

When Jockey C WHITELEY was questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on CHOP CHOP, he stated that his instructions were to have the horse in a handy position. C WHITELEY further stated that he was caught wide shortly after the start and made a number of attempts to get to the inside of SENSATIONAL GIRL. Approaching the 800 metres CHOP CHOP was taken wider on the track when MADAM FRENCH shifted off the fence and CHOP CHOP was then obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event. C WHITELEY’s comments were noted.

RACE 7 – COCA-COLA AMATIL (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

Stewards considered an objection lodged by N JOLLY the rider of KWILA SPIRIT which finished 4th against K BELL (JUST CASSIDY) being declared the 3rd placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference at the 200 metres. On the evidence it was established that whilst JUST CASSIDY did shift in slightly, the degree of interference suffered by KWILA SPIRIT did not exceed the margin between the two horses at the finish and therefore they dismissed the objection.

REBEL REBEL jumped away awkwardly.

App. D GAY, C WHITELEY and N JOLLY were each fined $50 for returning to scale in excess of ½ kg over their declared weight.

Stewards questioned Jockey A COWIE and Stable foreman Mr BRUCE HILL regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of CAPTAIN RHETT. Jockey A COWIE stated that although a lack of pace in today’s event did not suit the gelding he failed to run on strongly as he had done at his previous start and was at a loss to explain the gelding’s performance today. Mr HILL undertook to bring to the stewards’ attention if anything comes to light within the next 48 hours. A veterinary examination of CAPTAIN RHETT revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 8 – HEANEYS PERFORMERS IN PRINT (CLASS 6) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES

ACTRESS GRACE blundered on jumping away.

Approaching the 100 metres the tiring RAINBOW RIBBONS shifted out and hampered CLASSIC VERDICT.

EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH MARLOCK, LADY VETTORI and CAPTAIN RHETT.
