On 17 October 2001, Stewards interviewed App. D WHEELER’s Master, Mr L MAYFIELD-SMITH and the reasons for his Apprentice being unable to fulfil his engagement at the abovementioned meeting were accepted.

Acting on a report from betting supervisor, Mr R O’Toole, licensed jockey BRETT CALKIN pleaded guilty to a charge under AR83C in that he placed a wager on the totaliser. B CALKIN was fined the sum of $100.
As G PALMER was indisposed through illness, the following replacements were approved:

RACE 1 – HONDA INDY 300 MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
CAPSAN was crowded at the start between PRINCESS CAROLINE and CANADIAN CELEST both of which jumped awkwardly.
STERNER jumped outwards at the start and tightened TRIP TO VEGA on to BAYARDO.
Approaching the 1,000 metres BAYARDO shifted in momentarily tightening TRIP TO VEGA on to CAPSAN.
Leaving the 800 metres CANADIAN CELEST shifted out around the heels of STERNER and momentarily hampered I CAN SEE DAYLIGHT. TRIP TO VEGA which was following was obliged to steady off the heels of I CAN SEE DAYLIGHT.
Shortly after entering the straight BAYARDO, I CAN SEE DAYLIGHT and GRANDE ALLEE came together after GRANDE ALLEE shifted out slightly.
When questioned regarding the performance of TRIP TO VEGA, C WHITELEY stated that the gelding was inclined to race greenly throughout the event and in particular, was inclined to hang in in the straight.
RACE 2 – DISTRIBUTION (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 900 METRES
Trainer M NOLAN through his stable representative was penalised the sum of $25 for failing to submit a stable return to change the gear on CELESTAMOR.
The club’s veterinary surgeon advised that EXCIMER LAD took charge of its rider in the preliminary and was examined by him and passed fit to start prior to the event.
CELESTAMOR reared at the start and jumped out making contact with VAIN AND NOBLE.
Inside the 700 metres CELESTAMOR shifted in and bumped ROLLTON.
Shortly after entering the straight VAIN AND NOBLE was momentarily steadied when ROLLTON shifted in under pressure.
A veterinary examination of EXCIMER LAD which compounded in the straight failed to reveal any abnormality.
MY NAVY BLUE suffered a bleeding attack in the event. Trainer G STEWART’s representative was advised that as this was the gelding’s second bleeding attack in its career, it would now incur a liftetime ban as prescribed under AR53A.
RACE 3 – ATTWOOD MARSHALL LAWYERS’ HANDICAP – 900 METRES
As D McMASTER was indisposed through injury, she was replaced as the rider of YANGAN LAD by D GRIFFIN.
RACE 4 – FITZPATRICKS FILLIES AND MARES (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
HOT COLLAR knuckled over at the start.
DONBRODI jumped away awkwardly.
RACE 5 – TREACHER & ASSOCIATES (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
As App. J FLEMING was unable to fulfil his engagement on SHE WILL, he was replaced by App. C PROSSER. Stewards intend to interview App. J FLEMING regarding this matter.
SHE WILL and DARK SEA were both declared late scratchings on vet’s advice at 3:18 pm. SHE WILL was extremely fractious in the barriers and DARK SEA was injured as a result. Prior to the announcement of ‘correct weight’ all monies invested on SHE WILL and DARK SEA were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 10 cents in the dollar for a win and 12 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. Trainer P BALZEN was advised that he must obtain a further Barrier Certificate for SHE WILL prior to its next race start.
IN COBARGO and RAW PRAWN were both slow to begin.
A short distance after the start CAPTAIN COSMIC shifted in and momentarily crowded MELTIDE in on to SIDEKICK.
Approaching the 1,200 metres MELTIDE when being steadied off the heels of CAPTAIN COSMIC shifted in and tightened SIDEKICK in on to IN COBARGO. In this incident KING’S CONCERT which was following was obliged to shift out to avoid the heels of SIDEKICK.
Approaching the first turn SIDEKICK shifted out and made contact with EBONYTARI which was forced wider on the track.
K BELL reported that IN COBARGO raced ungenerously throughout the event.
RACE 6 – RAY WHITE SURFERS PARADISE (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
Approaching the 1,100 metres THREATNER had to be steadied off the heels of CIRCULAR KEY which shifted in abruptly when racing ungenerously. THREATNER continued to race in restricted room and approaching the 600 metres had to be checked off the heels of CIRCULAR KEY which shifted in and away from MOVILLE SON. M BENNETT the rider of MOVILLE SON was cautioned and advised in similar circumstances to allow sufficient room for runners to his inside.
Inside the 200 metres THREATNER shifted in under pressure and forced MOVILLE SON in on to CIRCULAR KEY which had to be steadied off the heels of SALIENT PRINCE.
RACE 7 – PROSPERITY (COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES) (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
NEWTONIAN was crowded at the start between COCKY CRUISER and ENTITY both of which jumped awkwardly.
Shortly after the start SEA OF DARKNESS and JORDAN’S TABOO were both crowded for room between JEUNE’S JESTER and CALL ME BUCK both of which shifted ground. Following this incident TELE SERIES blundered after striking the heels of ENTITY.
RACE 8 – SHIRLAWS (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES
FORDS BRIDGE was declared a late scratching at 2:05 pm acting on vet’s advice after the horse had sustained injuries at the stable.
SEA SIOUX reared and lost ground at the start.
M BENNETT was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting TYNONG TERROR to shift out approaching the 400 metres when insufficiently clear of ZINA ZULU resulting in that horse having to be checked by its rider P HAMMERSLEY. M BENNETT’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence midnight 24 October 2001, and to expire midnight 4 November 2001.
