GENERAL:
Stewards today re-convened an inquiry from Saturday 26 October 2002, when in race 2 both C Small (KINGS CROSS) and K Bell (TELTIME) were dislodged from their mounts. Evidence was taken from C Small, K Bell and M Smith-Lester (CHIEF BRAVEHEART). After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol films, it was established that approaching the 700m, CHIEF BRAVEHEART, when racing keenly pulled its way up on to the heels of JAROSLAV. At this stage M Smith-Lester angled his mount to the outside of that runner’s heels and was in a position one off the fence but racing in restricted room to the inside of KINGS CROSS. Approaching the 650m CHIEF BRAVEHEART and KINGS CROSS made contact and as a result both runners became unbalanced and KINGS CROSS blundered, fell and dislodged its rider. TELTIME which was following was unable to avoid the fallen KINGS CROSS and as a result also fell and dislodged its rider. A veterinary examination of KINGS CROSS following the falls, revealed a compound fracture of the left forearm and the gelding was euthanised on humane grounds. On the evidence presented the stewards found that no rider was at fault and the incident was deemed accidental.
