GENERAL
As A. Pattillo was indisposed through illness the following rider replacements were approved:-
Race 5 PRESS J. Cook
Race 9 STITCHED UP A. Kennedy
RACE 1: HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY L & M ELECTRICS H'CAP - 900 M.
RED MOUNTAIN which could not be loaded into the barriers was declared a late scratching at 11.33 a.m by order of Stewards. UMA SPIRIT which was fractious and broke through the gates on three(3) occasions was also declared a late scratching at 11.35 a.m by order of Stewards. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all bets placed prior to 11.33 a.m. were subject to deductions of 24 cents in the dollar for a win and 23 cents in the dollar for a place on the face value of the ticket. All bets placed between 11.33 a.m. and 11.35 a.m. were subject to deductions of 8 cents in the dollar for a win and 9 cents in the dollar for a place on the face value of the ticket. Trainers Mr A. Ross and Mr A. Curtis were advised that they must obtain a further barrier certificate for their respective horses prior to racing again.
SHE'S OUR DANE was slow to begin.
KEAVE HOUSE jumped out at the start and made heavy contact with DASHING DAVE.
OUR VICTORY GIRL raced wide throughout the event.
LIEUTENANT GENERAL raced greenly when placed under pressure in the straight.
Over the concluding stages KEAVE HOUSE laid out when placed under pressure.
RACE 2: L & M LG 2-Y-O MAIDEN H'CAP - 900 M.
OUR BULLION jumped away awkwardly.
PRETTY NEAT jumped out at the start and made contact with FASHION SETTER.
HELLENIC WARRIOR shifted in abruptly at the start and hampered WING CHUN.
JETE'S WONDER and ALLY BEE were slow to begin.
G. Birney the rider of HUDSON JACK was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that approaching the 700 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear resulting in SNOW WORRIES having to be checked after being tightened onto VILLOSA. In this incident SNOW WORRIES then shifted out and hampered HELLENIC WARRIOR. G. Birney's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of nine(9) meetings to commence midnight 28 May, 2003 up to and including 9 June, 2003.
Approaching the 400 metres OUR BULLION had to steady off the heels of HUDSON JACK which shifted in when racing greenly.
Inside the final 200 metres ALLY BEE was placed in restricted room between HELLENIC WARRIOR and SNOW WORRIES which shifted out when racing greenly.
Following this event S. Shield was stood down by the Club's Doctor. The following replacements were approved:-
Race 3 SMART 'N' SASSY M. Traecey
Race 5 GENERAL QUARTERS D. Griffin
Race 8 MOONBI CHIEF M. Williamson
RACE 3: FOXTEL & HTR H'CAP - 1300 M.
Approaching the 1200 metres ELTERWATER shifted out abruptly and forced KARMILLA , SHE'S AT LIBERTY, ANNIE THE BRAVE and SMART 'N' SASSY wider on the track. In this incident ANNIE THE BRAVE had to be checked off the heels of SHE'S AT LIBERTY.
Approaching the first turn KARMILLA commenced to race ungenerously shifted in and hampered OUR PROUD HOPE.
From rounding the home turn until inside the 250 metres ARROGANT ARCH was held up for clear running.
RACE 4: L & M RESORT NEWS H'CAP - 1300 M.
GARRICK and KING'S AURA were slow to begin.
ROYAL ARENA knuckled over at start and dislodged its rider R. Crilley. R. Crilley did not sustain any injuries in this incident.
TRIPLE PE was inclined to lay out when placed under pressure in the straight.
RACE 5: L & M MITSUBISHI CLASS 1 H'CAP - 1800 M.
PARAMETER was declared a late scratching at 10.35 a.m. after being found to be lame in the near fore leg.
MAGIC GOLD reared at the start and lost ground.
ANTONIA ROSE was slow to begin.
Approaching the first turn BOULDER BLAZE and Mr. CONNOLLY were tightened for room by SUSURRO (N. Day) which shifted in. YUKON STAR which was following had to be steadied off the heels of BOULDER BLAZE and in doing so shifted out and hampered GENERAL QUARTERS. N. Day was severely reprimanded and advised to be fully clear when shifting ground in future.
Shortly after entering the straight when placed under pressure SUSURRO shifted out abruptly despite the efforts of its rider resulting in BOULDER BLAZE having to be checked. GENERAL QUARTERS which was following had to be severely checked as a consequence.
Inside the 250 metres SUSURRO then commenced to hang out and finished the race on the outside of the course proper.
BOULDER BLAZE was galloped on in the event and sustained a deep puncture wound to the off hind leg.
A postrace veterinary examination of SUSURRO failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer L. Birchley's representative was advised that the gelding must barrier trial to the stewards' satisfaction prior to racing again.
RACE 6: L & M PANASONIC OPEN H'CAP - 1400 M.
CROFTSIDE PARK jumped out at the start and hampered HUGE JET.
Inside the 1200 metres MORINGA'S MANDRAKE commenced to overrace and as a result had to be steadied off the heels of CARAMEL STAR.
For some distance inside the 600 metres GLADMAC was unable to improve from behind the heels of TAKE STRIKE.
For some distance approaching the 200 metres CASUAL REWARD was held up and unable to obtain clear running between IRON ORE and CARAMEL STAR.
RACE 7: L & M ELECTROLUX CLASS 5 H'CAP - 2200 M.
LITTLE KATERI was slow to begin.
Approaching the 2000 metres CHEERFULLY had to be steadied off the heels of SIR NAGANO which shifted in.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the riding tactics adopted by M. Traecey on CHEERFULLY in today's event. After taking evidence from M. Traecey and stableforeman Mr B. Briffa the matter was adjourned until a date to be fixed to enable stewards to take evidence from the managing part-owner and trainer B. Guy.
RACE 8: L & M ELECTRICS CLASS 2 H'CAP - 1400 M.
BLU SKY MINING was slow to begin.
ZED STAR jumped away awkwardly.
SEROE COLORADO was slow to begin.
MOOBI CHIEF was obliged to race wide in the early and middle stages.
Approaching the 1000 metres MIGHTY ICON (M. Carson) shifted in on an acute angle which resulted in SENSIBLE being crowded onto BLU SKY MINING. M. Carson was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of PROVINCE trainer B. Maidment stated that he felt the gelding was able to lead today without being challenged as has been the case in its previous starts. He further stated that he was of the opinion that PROVINCE was better suited in today's 1400 metre race as it performed disappointingly when tested over longer distances. He added that the gelding appreciated today's firm track and has not been suited at its most recent start on rain affected ground. These explanations were noted.
RACE 9: CARLTON DRAUGHT GOLDMARKET - WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST CLASS 3 H'CAP - 1200 M.
CAP JUAN and FAIRY QUEEN came together at the start.
Shortly after the start CROWN REGATTA shifted in and crowded CRAIGLEA CHICK onto CRAIGLEA LACE.
App. R. Hurley the rider of CHIEF QUALO pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 300 metres he allowed his mount to shift out on an acute angle to obtain clear running when not clear resulting in CRAIGLEA LACE having to be checked. App. R. Hurley's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of six(6) meetings to commence midnight 24 May, 2003 up to and including Thursday 5 June, 2003. In assessing penalty stewards took into account the degree of interference in this incident in addition to App. Hurley's good race riding record.
Approaching the 50 metres STITCHED UP had to be steadied after racing up onto the heels of CROWN REGATTA.
ALL WINNERS WERE SWABBED.
