FROM GCTC MEETING, 19.6.04 RACE 7. CMA BRISBANE & GOLD COAST CLASS 3 H'CAP 1800M.
Stewards today reconvened an inquiry into the reasons why M. Johnston, D. Browne, and apprentices A. Best and A. Morris were dislodged from ther respective mounts approaching the home turn. At the inquiry on 19 June, evidence was taken from M. Traecey (LOOK HERE TAY), L. Deguara (WESTMINSTER HALL), N. Day (STAR CLANG), K. Pope (DAPPLE EXPRESS), D. Browne (PERETTE), A. Erhart (SNOWY WEATHER), A. Morris (MAKE ME STRONG), M. SmithLester (AIDAN JAMES), A. Kennedy (ULTIMATE FORCE) and D. Green (POLISH COURT). At the reconvened inquiry, further evidence was taken from D. Green and D. Browne, in addition to M. Johnston (PARAMETER) and A. Best (BALEZE). After hearing the riders' observations and viewing the patrol films, it was established that M. Johnston's saddle had slipped to the off side rounding the 1400m. turn, which placed him at a disadvantage in controlling his mount. Inside the 500m., the stirrup leather became detached when the tree of the saddle broke, and as a result M. Johnston was dislodged from the offside of the horse. D. Green reacted by shifting his horse out to avoid the fallen Johnson, which resulted in BALEZE striking that runner's heels and falling, dislodging A. Best. MAKE ME STRONG, which was following, was unable to avoid the fallen BALEZE and also fell, dislodging A. Morris. In turn, PERETTE, which was following MAKE ME STRONG, collided with the fallen BALEZE and stumbled, alsodislodging its rider, D. Brown. Stewards presented the saddle as an exhibit at this inquiry as possession of it was taken after the fall. Upon examination, it was found to be in a serviceable condition and in fact confirmed M. Johnston's evidence that the tree had broken away from the saddle. On the basis of all the evidence presented to the stewards, they were satisfied that the incident was of an accidental nature.

Over the concluding stages, MAKIN LOVE was obliged to steady off the heels of ICE BIRD, which shifted in under pressure.
When questioned, D. Gay, rider of SCOTCH AND ICE, explained that he lost the use of his near side iron at the start and did not regain the use of the said iron until inside the 1400m. He further stated that the horse was reluctant to race at any stage despite being ridden along, and he was reluctant to push the horse out in the straight as, in his opinion, he felt there may have been something amiss in its action. Trainer A. McRae advised that SCOTCH AND ICE would now be having a short spell and he undertook to give the horse a jump out prior to racing again. A postrace veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality or soreness, however the veterinary surgeon did note that SCOTCH AND ICE exhibited an unusual hind leg gait.

Lipps’ representative undertook to inform stewards of anything that may come to light in the ensuing days that may explain the disappointing performance of JASONS JOY. Mr Lipps’ representative was also advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding's barrier manners.
