JUST ONE LOOK was slow to begin (2L).
SO SPICY jumped outwards when released.
Stewards instructed App. R. McMahon to exercise more care when nearing the 500 metres his mount, whilst overracing, became awkwardly placed on the heels of OUR CANNY where it shifted out taking ANNIES ATTITUDE wider on the track.
Stewards questioned App. R. McMahon over the performance of TRICKSWITHMIRRORS and he stated that after the gelding jumped well he was able to take a sit behind the leaders but then shortly after when overracing became awkward on heels and shifted out nearing the 500 metres. On straightening he stated that TRICKSWITHMIRRORS was travelling well but when asked for an effort in the early part of the straight failed to respond and had a tendency to lay out in the straight and he felt that the gelding was very disappointing. He further stated the trainer had indicated that TRICKSWITHMIRRORS may be sent for a spell. A postrace veterinary examination revealed TRICKSWITHMIRRORS had sustained a small abrasion to the near hind pastern and a swab sample was taken. Stewards also questioned trainer J. Caught over the performance and he stated that he was a little concerned with TRICKSWITHMIRRORS approaching the 500 metres when overracing and observed that the horse became awkward on heels and had to shift out but he stated that from this point he expected it to improve but in the straight he felt that TRICKSWITHMIRRORS was under considerable pressure and failed to run on. He stated that he was disappointed for a run and would now send the gelding for a spell.
OUR CANNY lay out in the straight.
Following the running of this event N. Day was stood down by the Club's medical officer due to illness and was replaced as detailed in the Stewards' Summary.
Race 2: Grand Motors 3YO & Up Maiden Plate - 1800m

MECHANISM jumped awkwardly.
AIN'TNOTHIN'BETTER was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1500 metres MECHANISM and FOXTROT GUN bumped resulting in FOXTROT GUN becoming unbalanced, shifting out and bumping FLINDERS PARADE which then became awkward on the heels of RAPID TYPE for a short distance and was steadied.
Approaching the 1000 metres RUSHWOOD which was overracing became momentarily awkward on the heels of FOXTROT GUN and was steadied.
Rounding the home turn RUSHWOOD became crowded to the inside of FLINDERS PARADE which was under pressure and weakening.
Stewards questioned App. M. Yoshinaga over the performance of DARE AND HONOUR. He stated that he was instructed to be back if possible and that on jumping the colt jumped well but was going to be caught wide so he elected to restrain and came back to the rear of the field however, during the early stages the colt got off the bit and despite his urging failed to respond. He further stated that from the 800 metres he was able to improve to the tail of the field and from the 500 metres his mount began to make ground quickly then shortly after straightening raced in restricted room for a considerable distance in the straight. Stewards noted App. Yoshinaga's explanation.
Race 3: Gold Coast Earthmoving Maiden H'Cap - 1300m
1st - Down To Earth 2nd - Senart 3rd - Rivkin 4th - Beauborough
EYEAM ZEUS and SHINKO'S SHOW were slow to begin.
THE CAVERN CLUB overraced during the early stages, got it's head up and became awkward for some distance.
Shortly after the start SHINKO'S SHOW began to race ungenerously and became awkward between RIVKIN and SMUT for a short distance.
Stewards questioned jockey B. Stewart regarding the performance of RIVKIN. He stated after the colt jumped well he was unable to hold his early spot near the lead after being beaten for speed. He said he was then shuffled back in the field and got back further than intended. Approaching the 800 metres he stated his mount was unable to improve from this point when racing behind BLU AURA and to his outside was SMUT however, from the 500 metres he was able to secure clear running and began to make ground quickly. He further stated that from this point RIVKIN finished off the race well. He added that the trainer had suggested possibly a start in blinkers but it is his opinion that the colt needs more ground at this stage of it's preparation. RIVKIN was sent for a postrace specimen.
A postrace veterinary examination of SHINKO'S SHOW revealed the filly to be lame in the off hind leg. Connections were instructed to provide a veterinary certificate of soundness before starting the filly again.
Race 4: Nerang RSL & Memorial Club Class 3 H'Cap - 1000m
1st - Enzeel 2nd - Citico 3rd - Jimeoin 4th - Effectively
On return to scale an objection was lodged by App. R. Plumb the rider of 4th placegetter EFFECTIVELY against ENZEEL (A. Kennedy) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference shortly after the start. After taking evidence from all connections, stewards' own observations and viewing all available films the objection was dismissed and placings confirmed. In dismissing the objection stewards could not be comfortably assured that the majority of the interference was caused by ENZEEL, resulting in the loss of ground to EFFECTIVELY. Correct weight was declared on the numbers 5, 4, 7 and 2.
On jumping YO KIDOKI stumbled and became unbalanced losing ground.
JIMEOIN jumped in at the start and bumped DESERT SAMBA.
Shortly after the start NEDIYM'S SHADOW was hampered by CITICO and BIRDLADY which both shifted ground.
Shortly after the start EFFECTIVELY was crowded and checked when racing between ENZEEL and DAILY ISSUE. ENZEEL was taken out by JIMEOIN which in turn was taken out by DESERT SAMBA. To the outside DAILY ISSUE was taken in by CITICO which shifted in and away from BIRDLADY. Stewards deemed the matter to be a racing incident and no action was taken against any one rider.
Shortly after leaving the 300 metres both YO KIDOKI and DAILY ISSUE came together and bumped on several occasions. Over the final stages DAILY ISSUE was unable to obtain clear running after having a tendency to lay out behind ENZEEL.
A postrace veterinary inspection of BIRDLADY revealed no abnormality with the exception that the filly had lost it's off fore plate.
Following the running of this event jockey A. Kennedy was stood down by the Club's Doctor after suffering an injury to his right forearm, which was sustained while pulling ENZEEL up. A. Kennedy was subsequently replaced by M. Traecey as the rider of TYCOON ROSE in Race 7.
Race 5: Surfers Paradise RSL Class 4 H'Cap - 2200m
1st - Seven Crownies 2nd - Flatter 3rd - Eye Gee Aye 4th - What's The Scoop

In the early stages KNAPPSTEIN and FLATTER were both caught wide and then rounding the turn near the 1800 metres KNAPPSTEIN hung out for some distance.
Approaching the 1500 metres KNAPPSTEIN which was overracing became awkwardly placed on the heels of WHAT'S THE SCOOP and was steadied.
Stewards questioned App. L. Fyfe over his riding tactics employed on KNAPPSTEIN. App. Fyfe stated that trainer M. Thexton advised that the horse does not lead and requested it was to be off the fence during the early stages as it jumps well and settles well. He was then further instructed that from the 1000 metres he was to allow KNAPPSTEIN to stride forward as she had informed him that the horse was a distance runner. He stated however, that he felt by following instructions he may have erred in that after electing to go forward from the 1000 metres he placed the gelding under further pressure which in his opinion resulted in KNAPPSTEIN failing to run on shortly after straightening. He further stated in hindsight it would have been better to remain in a handy position two(2) wide behind the leaders and elect to go forward between the 800 and 600 metres. Stewards noted his explanationand will contact trainer M. Thexton at a later date to confirm the instructions.
SEVEN CROWNIES lost it's near hind plate during running.

Trainer H. Norman was instructed that VORACIOUS would have to trial to the satisfaction of stewards before starting again. A veterinary examination of VORACIOUS revealed the gelding to have suffered lacerations to the inside of the near hind stifle and cannon and abrasions to the withers. Trainer H. Norman was instructed to produce a veterinary certificate of soundness before starting again.
SEA DRIVE and OUR EXCESS were slow to begin.
SLICK OPERATOR jumped in and crowded SMART STRIKE.

OUR CHUM hung out rounding the home turn then shortly after WRONG DOING became awkward on the heels of OUR CHUM and shifted out abruptly. A postrace veterinary examination of SEA DRIVE revealed no abnormality.
